Think of the 8-12 turns of production you're saving. I know i can do a lot in 8 in turns. Being the first to monarchy/republic can be a sizeable advantage as well. Also, though rarely, you may have to change governments due to war weariness.

The cheap temples and cathedrals are great for emperor-deity level games. With only 1 happy citizen per city, keeping them content is a must. Building an early cathedral allows my cities to grow to sizes comparable to the AI cities, allowing me the production to wage war.

The religious attribute really shines at higher levels, where every turn is essential, and a long anarchy is less forgiving.

Seriously... Industrious is the way to go. Usefull in the beginning for mine/irrigation/road building AND later on for pollution. I ususally keep 4 automated workers: the same turn pollution appears they wipe it off!

why do the people say that religious is important because of 1 turn anarchy? ... u only have to change goverment 2 times, so what is the big business with it? it is not like if u have to change goverment all the time in the whole game... lets be honest, in the whole game u have to change goverment 2 times so why do people take the 1 turn anarchy too seriously?

An example for you:

Say you are a democracy. You are at peace, and everything is cool. Suddenly, some idiot like Shaka or Bismark decides to attack you for no reason. After a time, war weariness will set in. If you can't stop the war, eventually your civ will come apart at the seams. Having no delay in switching governments makes swapping governments during wartime a viable strategy.

If you are locked in a death struggle with another civ, 4-6 turns of anarchy can be FATAL.

Industrious is great.

Religious is great.

GO EGYPTIANS!

PS: I used to like the Babylonians until the 1.17 patch. With the breathtaking speed of tech advancement now, Scientific is less attractive. It's easier to buy your techs than research them yourself.

8-12 turns of anarchy ? i always play with non religious civs and it only takes me between 5 and 6 turns the anarchy.

After now having won Standard, Regent games with most of the Civs, I've got a good feel for their attributes, which I'd rate, in descending order ...

  1. Religious
  2. Militaristic
  3. Industrious
  4. Scientific
  5. Commercial
  6. Expansionist
    [/list=1]

Japan and Aztecs are my favourite Civs. :)
(Is it a coincidence that these two are the only two to have the same attributes? ;) )

(And if you've ever wondered why they do have the same attributes, well, the number of distinct combinations you can choose (2 distinct attributes out of 6) is 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 15. But there are 16 Civs, therefore two Civs have to have the same attributes. :) )

Despotism-->Monarchy--> Republic. Anarchy is generally 4-6 turns long isn't it? So spread between 2-3 periods.. I've randomed Aztecs, Iroquois and Babylonians (twice!) in my past few games, i'm beginning to forget what it feels like. :)

lol no, i have to disagree with you, right now im playing with CHINESE an industrious civ, i think industrious is more important. look the post before yours, but thats not the point, my point is that if u have temples, catedrals, coleseums, police stations, a lot of money and between 6 or 8 lujuries, u can support a long war with democracy, right now im playing with chinese and im a long war, and i still have no problems, i got 7 lujuries, 30.000 gold almost all my civs have temple, catedrals, coleseums, and police statios, also the UNIVERSAL SUFRAGE helps to keep the war weariness low, if u want me i can post the SAVE GAME here so u can see the example, and right now im in the Artillery, infantry, tanks era, i havent research flight yet, so u can imagine. If u have a good empire, then u dont need to change to other goverments.

I go Despotism------(5 or 7 turns of anarchy)----------->Republic------(5 or 7 turns of anarchy)-------->Democracy (i stay here until the end of the game)

and u play like 500 turns, so what are 10 or 14 turns compared to 500 turns? religious is not #1 to me, i put #1 INDUSTRIoUS

With a religious civ, you can change governments more often. Generally, republic or democracy for peace, then monarchy or communism for war. I usually have at least one war per Age.

i agree with u JoseM, industrious is the BEST one. But it's not really important to have religous (wht r u guys talking bout) cause anarachy lasts like 1/300 of the game. it BARELY affects production. my strat mostly involves TOTAL science to get power units to eliminate enemies older, more outdated units.

P.S. JoseM, PLEASE POST SAVE GAME!!!!!!!!!

If I am not a religious civ, I usually change governments only once, from Depotism to Republic; then I stay Republic, rain or shine.

My favorite attribute remains the one I haven't played in a while.

MrBiggBoy ill post the save game when i end my war against the Persian and the Americans.

I was getting like 700+ gold per turn from the Americans until the persians convinced the americans to declare war against me, now my net gold went down like from 1000+ gold per turn to 300+ gold per turn, but i had to increase happiness and now i get like 40+ gold per turn. I have to end those wars first.

Current war:
China-England-India-France-Egypt-Iroquious
vs
Persia-America
(Roma and Zulus are neutrals in this war)

second war:
China
vs
Zulus

check out this screenshot so u can know the map of the game.
ill post the SS later but for the luckiest stuff of all my capital BEIJING has the IRON WORKS and it has 150 of production, lol lucky me the capital apeared with stone and coal
