it'S all depend on the map

with a lot of forest/jungle - industrious
huge map expansionnist ( get all first age tech free )
...
.....

Religious. Those 1/2 cost temples and cathedrals help keep the people in line (and boost culture), plus instantly switching governments is a BIG bonus.

I love industrious and religious. Infrastructure is the key to my gaming style, and being able to switch governments quickly is invaluable.

Okay, who voted for expansionist? We can all safley say that expansionist is the worst. Especially in the late game.

i did vote for expansionnist but like i said it depend what type of game you want to play.

if you play on a standart map, with an expansionnist civ, on a low level game (under monarch) you have all the first tech tree before the other civ get 3 tech.

and after you just kill them with knight attacking there pikemen. you get a bunch of GL and easily build your FP and other wonder.
no need of army *except if you want heroic epic* since your troop are already easily killing the ennemy.

also you will probably get 2 extra settler with expansionnist, in the beggining this meant around 20 and more citi in later game.

I don't know/remember what the Persian's attributes were, but if I could remember them, I'd vote for one of those. :D

I picked Religious but Industrious is a close second with Mililaritistic in 3rd.

Until recently I though religious was essential.

Then I discovered industriousness. The speed with which you develop terrain seems to make up for paying full shields on all your improvements.

And, I have a theory about revolutions:

If you revolt as soon as a tech for a more advanced gov't becomes available, the duration of anarchy is shorter than if you waited a few turns for the "right moment". If true this will affect the importance of the "religious" trait for some people.

This is based on very unscientific observation, really more of a superstition, I guess, unless someone with more rigorous methods can confirm/debunk this idea.

Based on my (limited and not very successfull) experience, I would always prefer Scientific.
You've got precious little chance of winning a war unless you can bring superior units to the "party"...

Industrious may be good if you've got lots of jungle and such-like, but can you be sure you'll get lots of it when you pick who to play

playa - persians are scientific and industrious

Thank you. I like the scientific attribute. The Germans also have this attribute and I love to play them too. :king:

I think it depends of the player. If you are a more agressive player, you will like having a Militaristic Civ, and so on.

In my opinion, religious is a pretty important one, since you won't lose any time changing Governments, and that religious buildings benefits is nice, Temples and Cathedrals really are buildings to have.

Although, I think Expansionnist is not an important attribute.

The best trait is religious. Cheap temples is awesome especially in cheering up your people and gobbling up land with culture. 1 turn anarchy beats everything.
Second would be industrious. Quicker worker actions is really nice and big cites producing more shields is good too.
Third would be expansionist. More on larger maps. I can get the whole ancient age with goody huts. Even some middle age stuff. Its very important on harder difficulties.
Fourth would come militaristic. This mainly because more leaders.
Fifth be scientific. The extra tech in each era is nice but not essential. Cheap libaries are nice and make up for temple in the culture area but not happiness.
Sixth is commercial. Lower corruption sounds nice but its not that big of a deal when you compare to other traits. More commerce is not that great since money later in the game isn't a big problem.

I voted industrious. Currently having a very good game with egypt (r/i). But i also like the French quite a lot (C/I). The Frecnh give you a very powerful endgame, but you have to be careful with city placement as you are prone to culture flips if you're not. Sci and expansionist have to be the weakest in my opinion. I dont play military so cant say much about them.

For me, the best single attribute:

- Scientific: Cheap buildings that give more culture than the religious buildings and boost research. 3 Free techs is a little bonus. Also start with Bronze Working for early spearmen and 1 tech from Iron & swordsmen!

Still good:
- Industrious: Double-speed workers mean that I have half as many doing the same job (smaller payroll). Also, during the beginning of the game, when I have just 1 or 2, double-speed is huge for improving cities & claiming iron quickly. Also can save you from bad terrain. Extra shield for a Metropolis is pretty much nothing though.

- Militaristic: Cheap barracks means that more towns in the Ancient age will have one. Also, you get way more promotions. I hate fighting Militaristic civs & being non-Mil -> when your units lose, the defender gets promoted so your attack netted nothing! Also, more chances at Leaders.

- Religious: After several games, I've gotten used to playing without switching govts too often. Cheap temples are nice, but I rarely need cathedrals so quickly. Keeping people happy is a score thing, so I find this trait a little less than the best.

- Expansionist: If the great start was guaranteed every game, I might put this one at the top.

I don't care for:
- Commercial: All the studies I've seen have shown little improvement in corruption. 1 extra gold for a Metropolis. I'll pass. Start with Alphabet which is valuable to trade & helps get down the tree but doesn't give you any buildings, units, or wonders to start with.

My preference for attributes has changed as I've learned to play the game. When I first started, I though the expansionist trait gave a necessary edge to the exploration age. Now I've learned to do without.

Then came scientific & religious - for a while I thought the cheaper cultural improvements a must. And at first I was having 4 or more revolutions a game, trying to find the right fit for my civ. Now I know what to expect, and time my 2-3 rev's a game carefully and can live without religiousness.

Now I'm into industriousness - I can really use it to my advantage early in the game, getting roads up before my competitors and developing resources quickly. There may come a day, however, when my own use of workers is so efficient that the industrious bonus isn't as much an edge as it is now...

Which leaves commercial - don't see much use for it now, but maybe that's just because I don't know enough to take advantage of it...

Industrious workers are good for planting trees, Park Ranger. ;)

I've been sussed!
Yep, they are good for that. But now I'm playing a Monarch-level game and there's no time for that sort of thing...:(

why do the people say that religious is important because of 1 turn anarchy? ... u only have to change goverment 2 times, so what is the big business with it? it is not like if u have to change goverment all the time in the whole game... lets be honest, in the whole game u have to change goverment 2 times so why do people take the 1 turn anarchy too seriously?
