Best Civs for Newbie?

I always forget about one of the best aspects of the Persians - the extra move when in a golden age (which can last a long, long time). This means you can keep a seige unit out of range of a city and then move it, set it up and fire it in the same turn. Also handy in war generally. Happy banks (satrap's court) a bonus too.

I also concur that France are one of the most accessible Civs since they help you get early SPs quick which will boost early happiness among other things.

If you have Gods & Kings, you may want to try the Celts, just so you can experience the religion aspect of the game without any direct input on your part (to start) while you familiarize yourself with the mechanics of the game.

If that doesn't sound like your cup of tea (or you don't have G&K); I would do what many here have recomended:
play as America, France, or China. But play as America. (hint, hint)

Well if you want to go the economic/Diplomatic route, Arabia is great for that - I've always had a great game whenever I've used them for that reason. You can trade your Luxuries you'll have from the Bazaar to other Civs for the Luxuries you may not have and with any leftover Luxuries, I pay the other Civs to go to war with each other. This makes them dislike each other a lot, making it easier for you to win a Diplomatic victory. Plus, their constant warring will start to stint their empire growth and allow you to push ahead.
