Best National Anthem?

Vietnams' are nice tunes. Both of them.

The anthems had some interesting history behind them that I talked about in World History earlier: basically, the South Vietnamese anthem was composed by a Viet Cong, and the North Vietnamese anthem was composed by a guy whose songs were later banned by Ho Chi Minh.

Spanish anthem has the most pertinient lyrics: If there is nothing good to say, best to say nothing at all.

What I like about it is the fact that it is completely un-militaristic, unlike many other national anthems. It's a praise of the land rather than a collection of nationalistic ramblings, which I greatly appreciate.

Also, here's my second national anthem:

Remembered about this one. "Praise, Rus'" by Glinka. It was one of the candidates for Russia's state anthem after the fall of USSR.

I hear something about "rodnaja strana", "narod", etc. You should have picked that one.

I like Israel's the best:

Yeah, the Israeli one is really good.

Other than the soviet one I like this:

(DDR)
Spoiler :

Best commie anthem besides the Soviet one!

This used to be a Warsaw city anthem. Not sure wether its author was Polish or Russian. It used to be a popular revolutionary song here.

Yeah, it's very nice, calm and fitting for a cosy little place that Czechia is
I couldn't get a word of what's being sung though :(

I actually wouldn't mind living in Czechy for sometime when I'm old :old: How expensive is land there, buy the way? I would totally buy a hectar of land or so somewhere in Tatras. Gonna be chillin' like a boss in dear Slavic homeland when I retire :cowboy:

Also, here's my second national anthem...

Veles approves of this song, in Latin especially. It's sounds quintessentially European.

That's correct. There's no shortage of those word in the current one also

You gotta remember that since the USSR and to present times Russia's official doctrine is multinationalism, multiconfessionalism, multiculturalism and all that. So an anthem that has so much distinctively Rus' spirit about it just wouldn't fit, 'cause it would supposedly upset poor muslims and other minorities

So another one was choosen, decent too, but not too energetic.

It wasn't officially established by appropriate legal procedure until 2000, when the revamped Soviet one was reinstated. Whatever your political compass is, you just couldn't help to love and admire it ;) A purpose of an anthem (a rather archaic thing actually) is to inspire and unite people, and this one serves it 300%. Especially when it's played live and you're in a crowd of several thousands on the Red Square and there're fireworks... Even the most hopeless cynical west-lovers :D couldn't help to sing along and feel proud :smug:

And by the way you prolly would love the lyrics, 'cause they're absolutely un-militaristic and about land and people, go figure. It even mentions God :mischief:

Spoiler :

Rossiya sviashennaya nasha derjava,
Rossiya lubimaya nasha strana!
Moguchaya vol'ya, velikaya slava -
Tvoe dostoyanie na vse vremena!

Chorus:
Slavsia Otechestvo nashe svobodnoe -
Bratskih narodov soyuz vekovoi,
Predkami dannaya mudrost' narodnaya.
Slavsia strana, my gordimsia toboi!

Ot Yujnih morei do Polarnogo kraia
Raskinulis nashi lesa i polia.
Odna ty na svete, odna ty takaya,
Hranimaya Bogom rodnaya zemlia!

Chorus

Shirokiy prostor dlia mechty i dlia jizni
Griadushie nam otkryvaiut goda!
Nam silu daet nasha vernost Otchizne
Tak bylo, tak yest' i tak budet vsegda!

Chorus

Best commie anthem besides the Soviet one!

Infinitely better than the current German one. Were I a nemets (perish the thought) I wouldn't think twice.

Czechy? That's a Polish name for Česká republika (and we Moravians hate it with passion ;) ).

How expensive is land there, buy the way? I would totally buy a hectar of land or so somewhere in Tatras. Gonna be chillin' like a boss in dear Slavic homeland when I retire :cowboy:

Tatras are in Slovakia :mischief: I don't think non-EU foreigners can buy land here unless they first get the residency permit and spend some time here, but this can be easily circumvented by co-founding a company.

But hurry, the Dutch are buying land here like crazy. I guess they're beginning to realize what the future has in store for their low-lying country :D

Someone finally produced a version with the Latin lyrics.

What, no Tatras in Czechia? Not even a bit of it? Hmm...
Well, whatever those mountains in the south are. Rudnye gory? They look nice from up there in Google maps. Aren't they all just basically a continuation of Carpathian mts? I wouldn't mind Slovakia, anyway.

Poor fellas... But hey, they can always settle in Siberia :mischief: if the sheet hits the fan. If Russia wins 2012 Euro, they're gonna be more than welcome (our coach is Dutch) :D But they will have to quit all their weird and immoral Dutch ways [pimp]

All my relatives who're over 70 do that too. And I as a kid liked the Slovak part of the Czechoslovak anthem better than the Czech part

(I am not interested in little boys, BTW :scared: )

Well, we have mountains all around, just not as high and... mountain looking :(

I guess that's why they're moving here - we don't mind their immoral ways, in fact we want to learn new depravities from them :mischief:

I am glad there is much hate towards England's anthem. I am glad it is no longer our national anthem.
Why do you support an English team then?
Spanish anthem has the most pertinient lyrics: If there is nothing good to say, best to say nothing at all.
That's because there's not much good that can be said about Spain, sadly. :undecide:

Nice video, BTW

Polish Anthem isn't bad either.

Interesting... So Morava is sepatated from Czechs by a mountain chain. Hmm... Is there any popularty for the idea of revolting against your Czech opressors and establishing Great Moravia or something? :spear:

Легко :) That's precisely what a bunch of Yanks and Germans were doing at the last Moscow Day parade

Just because I think the English National Anthem is terrible, doesn't mean I can't support an English club football team.

USA #1. :mischief:

I mean, it's an old drinking song. :p
