Obviously Civ is at the top of this list for many on this site, but can anyone recommend other games that don't require a gamepad (i.e. utilize keyboard and mouse) and hopefully is similar in pace (e.g. turn based)?

Thanks!

how can you play a PC game without keyboard and mouse?

A PC is a personal computer, and a computer is made up of four parts: the tower, the monitor, the mouse, and the keyboard.

Sorry my initial post was poorly worded. I meant to say don't require a gamepad (game controller) -- in other words, games that only require a keypad + mouse.

oh, well... as far as I know, that's all of them. :D

I'd gladly recommend GalCiv 2, Rome Total War, Medieval 2 Total War, Hearts of Iron 2, Europa Universalis 3, and... well, that's all the TBS-type games I play. Although I use that term loosely; the Total War games have a campaign map which is Turn-Based, but also real-time battles in which you command many units. You can youtube for a better description of that, I suppose :p

Hearts of Iron 2 and EU3 are real-time, but they play so slowly (especially if you turn the speed low) that they are often grouped in with TBS games. They also allow you to pause anytime with no annoying interface to cover up your screen and block you from doing anything; you can do things while it is paused, effectively making it a turn-based game (each ((hour of a)) day could be a turn :p) GalCiv 2 is the most similar to Civilization.

I second the total war series and HOI/EU

generally they plug in via USB some are quite useful, such as a wheel for driving games or a joystick for flight sims.

Do you want only advices about strategy-like games, or are you also potentially interested in other genres ?

Alien Swarm, TF2, Total War before Empire, Civ, Vicky 1/2(when it comes out).

Hmm, best games across all genres.
In no particular order:
Rome:Total War
Deus Ex
Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines (with inofficial patches)
Master of Orion 2
Starcraft ( the original, haven't played Starcraft 2 yet)
Baldurs Gate 2
Dragon Age
Mass Effect 1&2
Alpha Centauri

It's hard to find a good PC game that can use a gamepad fully.

Broken Sword
In this game you play as an American tourist who becomes a world-traveling adventurer when a bomb explodes by his café table in Paris.
The game has a decent story told in a great way. You get to meet a lot of funny and interesting people, including a charming French mademoiselle. The gameplay is quite simple where you click on objects around you to solve tasks and get forward. The game is quite old, but the graphics are nicely drawn and it's detailed. It's not a strategy game, but I can really recommend it if you like slow game that requires some thinking and trying. It's one of my all-time favorite games, and I will play it again when I forget more of it.

There is the free card wars. Otherwise what has been listed in about what I would say.

Freelancer.

It is the gold standard for non-joystick flight controls, and all actiony flight games need to just blatantly steal it's mouse controls. :)

Oh yes, forgot Frelancer on my list. Story and cutscenes are horribly cheesy, but in a so bad it's good way.
Haven't played it in years because it always crashes on sicne I got a PC with Vista 64:(.

Yeah they're kinda cheesy in an understandably sci-fi sort of way :)

You can also mod it to break SP and play open-world.

My Vista x64 played Freelancer perfectly fine. It's a fun as hell game but with zero replayability since they took the MP offline :(
