Best ways to avoid Starvation in cities?

Hey guys! I'm a relatively new player to CIV 4. I started back in 2006 and played a bit on and off. Then I decided to get the Gold version this last Christmas because I liked it so much. But so far I haven't really gotten used to certain things, one of them is making sure my cities don't starve.

My only real technique right now is making them farther apart from each other, but usually I have to make them kind of close or the other guys take up valuable land while I'm in the process of scouting out stuff.

I knew if anyone could help it'd be here. So I hope someone can lend a hand, even for a very simple question like this one. :)

The simple answer is that you need to build cities where there is ample food to grow the city. This means eaither food resources (like wheat, fish, pigs) or ample grasslands and/or floodplains to build farms.

To gain access to the special resource or to build farms, you need to create a worker unit to improve the contryside.

I'd also like to throw in its not the end of the world if your cities starving. Of course, you want to have enough food to grow and work as many tiles as possible. But once you have the city, if its unable to work at size 7 without losing any production or commerce that it would get at size 6, then just let it starve down to a better size, and just get what production you can get from it. A starving city isn't the end of the world in Civ! (your people don't even care!)

The thing that really surprised me when I first started playing is that FOOD is the most important and bestest resource! Sure copper and things and great but a city w/o food is like a Ferrari w/o any gas! So just watch out for food resources and base city locations around them

Thanks guys! I'm now playing as Victoria and I have about 11,983 gold, I've limited myself to 7 cities on a large island with Russia on the other half. Thanks for the help!

12k gold...when!? You need to either crank up the slider or put your coins to use...

Here's a screenshot. I signed a mutual protection pack. I was thinking about breaking it.

OOOOHH my God RolandOlvo 15K in Gold.

If I were you:

I would change Civic's and start spending on military building for a number of Cities,

Bribe someone to starting a war with your intended victim,

Up-grade your military (land & Sea) ,

Then join the war once it has been under way for 3 or 4 turns (or better yet when asked to do so by the guy you bribed.

Or give it to me :goodjob:

Just looking at the screen shot more closely:

That is a very strange mix of things you have there

Building the Sis Chapel in 1746 but also researching Fission with a size 7 Barb City still around.

What game setting are you playing

I usually play Settler and up, but this particular game I was trying to see how much money I could rack up so I played Settler. I've currently got close to 50k.

Quick guide to avoiding starvation:

Step 1: Run the Slavery and Nationalism civics
Step 2: whip and draft tons of units
Step 3: KILL THEM ALL
