Beta of GOTM Mod for Mac - Please test

Thanks for the feedback. I've obviously made the installer more assertive about where it wants the mod to go than I intended. I'll fix it in the next revision. Meanwhile, sorry for the inconvenience.

You can direct where you want the files to go in the installer. But if you don't change the default path and you don't have your Civilization IV folder in Applications then it goes ahead and happily puts in the full path that it expects without any complaints. I think it would work better if it complained if it doesn't find the Mods folder instead of making it.

I did warn that I hadn't done all the installer scripting for a complete user experience - I was under the gun to get it up in time for the current GOTM, so there was a limit to the scripting and consequent testing I could do. PackageMaker has also changed a fair bit since I last looked at it, and its documentation has always left a lot to the user's imagination, so I wasn't confident of getting all the I's dotted and T's crossed in time.

Alan,
I may have noticed a small bug- not sure if its mac-specific or not, but figured I'd try here first.

In the F1 screen where it lists all the cities, if you click on the hammer to sort your cities by production, it sorts incorrently (for example 5 or 6 hammer cities will be listed above 10, 20 or 30 hammer cities). Presumably this means that hammers are missing their leading zeroes. I'm not sure I tried all the other categories, but I tried a few and this was the only one where I noticed this problem.

This is by no means a biggie, but I'm guessing we may see newer versions of the mods at some point in the future, and I'll guess that this is a pretty easy thing to fix.

I'll have a look at it when the latest SGOTM is off and running. Gyathaar's guess sounds right to me, and it's probably a bug in the original mod.

I was only waiting for my own copy of warlords, which arrived yesterday. I've been working on a Mac version of HoF-2.00.002, and I think I have a working file set. I need to test it a little more myself, then I'll put up a beta here.

It will never see the light of day as a released GOTM, of course. We have to wait for the Mac 2.08 version for that, but at least you'll be able to use the adviser and logging enhancements in your own games, if you wish.

Has the vanilla version been helpful?

I can't tell you how happy I am to hear you say that. I've been loving warlords but damn if I'm just about worthless without my enhanced advisors. ;)

The vanilla version has been great. I actually haven't gotten around to using it to play a GOTM with, as by the time that I was ready to do that my copy of Warlords showed up, which has been quite a distraction. But I used it a lot to just play normal games.

Since loading it as a mod means that you can only load saves that have been saved with it loaded, I don't use it like that except for the GOTM, I think I am going to be doing this month's. Instead I copied the Assets folder from the HOF-Mac-1.61.009 folder in my ~\Documents\Civilization IV folder as CustomAssets. That way I get all of that good stuff with every game that I play.

Now that I have been stumbling along in the dark playing Warlords without this I really appreciate the enhancements, especially the foreign advisors. You have to look in there so much more without the alerts and it is a lot more work to get all of the information that you need about the other civs.

The HoF mod is loaded through my ini file for every single game I play. I'm getting Warlords for Christmas, so I'll gladly test the new mod.

It won't work for WotM, you say? Is that mainly because of the version incompatibility, or are there other less soluble issues?

The version issue is pretty insoluble from where I stand. WOTMs are now running in 2.08, and 2.08 plays very differently from 2.00, so there's no way Mac players can currently compete on the same field as PC players.

The solution to that is for Aspyr to release Warlords 2.08 for the Mac, and to do it before Firaxis release the successor to 2.08 and WOTM jumps to that.

All being well I shall then need to create a Mac version of the then-available HOF-2.08.xxx. I hope that this will be relatively easy once I have 2.00.002 in the can, but what do I know? I thought changing 2.00.002 to work on the Mac would be easy! :hmm:

The GOTM and WOTM starting saves are locked into specific HOF mods. The only WOTM save available must use the windows HOF mod 2.08.001. That is why there has to be a different save for Mac users.

All of your games are now locked into the the mac HOF mod. If you wanted to post a save for someone else they would have to also have that mod, which means that they would also have to be on a mac. It also means that if you try a random game that someone has posted you can't use the mod. And I know that you are addicted, aren't you? :) If you go the CustomAssets route then anybody can run your saves and you have the HOF goodness always available.

Playing on the Vanillas team and I can't seem to load the game this is what its giving me (Pic Attached)

I asked in the SGOTM 3 sign-up thread if there were any Mac players in the team lists, as we would need a special version of the HoF Mod to support them. Only one player identified himself.

Creating a special version of the HoF Mod to support a Mac player in SGOTM would mean that all of that player's team would have to use it. And it could support none of the Civ4 bug fixes that are included in the current HoF Mod because we don't have an SDK for the Mac version that can do that. So it would have to be extended to all vanilla players to make the game fair.

The sole identified Mac player generously volunteered to stand down, as he didn't want to be responsible for all the vanilla players losing access to the HoF Mod bug fixes. As a result I didn't create the necessary cross-platform version of the mod.

All of this was covered in posts in the SGOTM 3 sign-up thread at the time, starting with this post, and culminating in my statement here that we would use the standard Windows mod. I also made it clear in the first post in the SGOTM 3 Maintenance Thread, which states: "There is no mod option to accommodate Mac players." The first post in the Signup Thread was also amended to make this clear.

So the bottom line is, unless you have the Windows version of vanilla Civ4, you will not be able to play SGOTM 3. Naturally, I'm sorry this is the case, and I'm also sorry that you didn't see any of the posts that covered it at the time. I'm not sure what else I could have done to bring it to your attention. As you have not been very active in this forum, I didn't have you pegged as a Mac player, otherwise I might have contacted you directly.

Blaime me, if you like, my shoulders are broad. But the basic problem lies with the lack of a SDK for the Mac version of Civ4.

Aww my bad, alright ill tell my team i can't play. Will this be corrected for the future? or is S/GOTM dead for macs?

It's going to be increasingly difficult to support Mac players for cross-platform play until we can get an SDK.

Even GOTM for Mac is a bit dicey because the PC HoF Mod closes a number of exploit loopholes and fixes some bugs, and we can't do that with the Mac version. We only get away with it because there are so few Mac players.

If a Mac-only team were put together then maybe that would work, since it would be comparable to the current situation in GOTM. That team could play a Mac start file with whatever is the latest Mac version of the Hof Mod, and the other teams would play with the full HoF Mod for Windows. You'll have to round up the interested players, and then gang up on Brad to join you :)

Looks like it's time to resurrect the Mac GOTM here in the mac forum. :D

Do you really think there would be enough players to make a competition? I'd be a bit surprised if we could get a full SGOTM team together.

Anyway, let's be optimists. Maybe pigs will fly and we'll get an SDK :D

It was always informal, nothing on the scale CFC did, or does, w/ the community GOTM. We probably had a dozen players or so.

Have you sensed any movement on the Mac SDK?
