Beta of GOTM Mod for Mac - Please test

It was always informal, nothing on the scale CFC did, or does, w/ the community GOTM. We probably had a dozen players or so.
I don't even see that level of support here. As I say, I'd be surprised and delighted if even half a dozen players would show up for an SGOTM team. But I don't really see the need for a separate Mac GOTM, since there's a Mac save for the main one each month with all of the infrastructure in place to handle the saves and scoring. If you wanted to report the results separately here for Mac players then you could do so. I'll be including info on which platform each player used in the results.

Have you sensed any movement on the Mac SDK?

Nothing. I think Brad's off on another project at Aspyr. Dunno whether the Warlords team will be getting to it - they also need to produce 2.08, of course. Since neither the SDK nor 2.08 will make money for Aspyr directly, I can see them both getting low priority :(.

A thought on SGOTM participation v. GOTM participation, irrespective of mac players: it's my belief that they're often two different types of players. I believe there is a group of people who enjoy the GOTM because playing it is on their own terms. Not that I'm advocating a Mac GOTM, but if you posted a mac save file with informal parameters, you might be surprised by how many grab it and play.

What do you mean by "informal parameters"?

Oh, we'd do some determining of what people wanted to play in terms of set-up and difficulty. Then, we'd rotate the person who would create the save file. He would post it in a thread, which would also be used by people to discuss their game-play. Of course, re-loading was against the "spirit-of-the-game," but no one went into policing exploits. It was "like" a GOTM, just none of the pagentry. No upload of saves, just post your score and type of victory. Sometimes, we'd place certain restrictions on the game - like a specific victory type.

I've never even considered a SGOTM, assuming that it wasn't for mac users. Also, I was afraid that my schedule might make it too difficult for me to be a reliable partner in any shared games. What kind of commitment does a SGOTM require?

Bad news about the SDK, by the way. I would really love to check out Fall from Heaven.

I was only indicating that I had "No news". Sorry if that came across as "Bad news".

For any Succession Game you need to keep pretty regular contact with the team thread, and get involved in discussions about where to take the game. Civ4, in particular, requires a consistent approach to strategy. Then, when you play a turn set, you need to take a bit of time over it, and write a log of what happens for your team to discuss. In a team of six, with 48 to 72 hours per turn set, you should be playing a set of maybe ten turns once every two weeks. In an SGOTM, the competitive element obviously adds a bit of pressure to the process, and may slow some people down and force them to think harder about their turns and the team strategy.

Just for the Record:

I've installed the HOF mod, and everything's fine so far. I'm halfway through GOTM 13, and losing :)

MacBook Core2Duo 2 gHz, 1 gig RAM. iow, no fancy graphics processor ;)

The only issue that I've noticed is that upon startup, I get an error message saying that Mods/Hof..... is an invalid mod folder. I probably didn't type the correct path into the .ini for the mod folder, and I haven't gone back to fix it yet.

No complaints at all, but many compliments to all involved in bringing the mac version up to parity. Cheers!

I'm still waiting for the World Builder file that I need to build the Mac versions of the GOTM 14 start files. When I get it, they will be built to use the existing Mac version of the HoF Mod.

Great! Not that I'm anxious - I'm still in the process of barely survivng GOTM 13.

But basically what you're saying is that Mac users won't need to update their version of HoF mod, right?

Hey - you're GMT, right?

Happy New Year  , and Hat's Off to Greenwich Observatory, for making sense out of these sidereal rhythyms :crazyeye:

Yes. It's 2007 here. Still feels the same, so far ;)

Happy New year!!

Alan,

Just donwnloaded 009 and it looks great! Many thanks. We have been debating HoF mod use in a democracy game and I haven't managed to load a windows version 010 save into my mac with 009. Is there a way? Will there be a way? TIA.

Sorry, no. The HoF Mod cannot be made cross-platform-compatible because the Windows version uses a customised DLL and the Mac version doesn't know how to deal with them.

Please address all complaints to Aspyr, who will probably blame Firaxis :p

I just started using HOF mod 009, and it's great. I have a question.

It seems to me that there's a bug in the exotic domestic advisor. Sorting cities by hammers doesn't seem to work. Do other people see this, or is it just me, or am I misunderstanding something in that advisor? In my games the cities with the largest production are always in the center of the list when sorting is turned on.

Edit: I should add this is vanilla.

yes dr_s, I've noticed that as well but just sort of got used to it. it seems to sort by first digit as opposed to the full value.

ex:

8
6
4
23
11
1

That's a classic sorting problem in software - using an alphabetic sort for numbers. We just inherit the mod code from the originator via the main HoF Mod team.

I'll pass it back as an issue, and it may get fixed when there's a new version released. Since the primary goal for this mod is to support GOTMs and SGOTMs, we need a consistent version, so I don't want to create a lot of intermediate releases for each individual fix.

It's funny that it happens only in that one column, as far as I can tell.

You don't happen to know the fix, do you Alan? (I understand not wanting to release intermediate versions, but I could apply the fix to my own copy.) I presume it's something in CvModSpecialDomesticAdvisor.py. That it's just that one column makes me think it'll be a simple fix.

If you are running the GOTM mod just before the culture on one of your cities jumps a level, you get a warning: "Athens is about to expand cultrual boundaries." I went in and fixed the spelling of cultural and quit getting that message altogether. So I'm not sure it is as easy to fix things in there as it seems.
