Between Frigate and Destroyer

Battleship 120? Come on, be serious! Whether or not you think that's realistic, it would suck for gameplay. It would make the unit invincible to anything except another battleship.

No, I think leave things the way they are, with the possible exception of dropping the destroyer strength a bit, or increasing the ironclad strength. We don't need any 120 strength units out there!

Hehe, I tecked way ahead of monety, he sent his galeseeses agaisnt my frigate, they get WAY better results than the AI's usual caravel horde. My poor frigates.

I suggest researching some steam engines and steel and get you some ocean-going Ironclad action going!
 
Sadly, no coal on my continent, nor on my colonies continent, nor even on montys continent... I've never seen that before, I went WB after that and saw that all the coal was on the other two continents. Oh well, I'll have to wait for combustion and Sci Method.
 
I've been trying not to derail this thread into a second thread about Wolf's mod, but Tlalynet's comment got me thinking about how impressed I was with how the AI handled the new Naval units. They seem to know how to use each of the new units and are pretty darn effective with them. Of course, when fighting an enemy that your way ahead of in tech, it doesn't make all that much difference... :p But it definitly makes the naval game much more interesting.

You could try TRADING for Coal!

Too bad I started from scratch after that on the new old DLL.

Thats why youre the mod master. Honestly I didnt think the Galeseese would be usefull, but if youre stuck in a war pre astronomy, wow.

AI will trade coal when they have a surplus, Ive done it before, I just didnt think of it this time, and anyway the guy i would have traded with wasnt at steam power yet.

Yes, it really sucked also in WWII to confront enemy battleships if your own surface fleet didn't have any. But we don't need to make Civ realistic. I don't play it as a war game. I play just to build society. There are lots of better war games if you want realistic feel of naval warfare.

Wolfshanze, since I think you're looking at this thread - I also had the issue with a crash mid-game with your (otherwise wonderful!) patch. I posted a save over in the BTS Mods and Scenarios forum, but wasn't sure if you'd see it there (but please, if you look, no making fun of how bad at Civ I am!) Vista crash, with the standard message that 'the program has stopped working'.

Battleship 120 is not bad. It's correct. The problem is FIRAXIS fighters can't sink a ship. That sucks. The best way to destroy a ship is Fighter! We've known that. Only Firaxis doesnt.

P.S.

Firaxis Destroyers made by Uranium before Oil Destroyers. With "Balanced" option you can't make Platform in the Ocean until you have Plastics. That's ridiculous. In MP, everyone researches FISSION to get Uranium Destroyers not Oil Destroyers.

Thanks again Wolfshanze. Lt.Bob's v4.0e seems to have cured my crash problem. Love the new ships. This could possibly become my favorite way to play. Current game has 30 civs, huge map, turn 450 on marathon and no crash.

And now, back to the game.

Glad to hear it... Lt.Bob's v4.0e will be included in my next new release of the mod... coming soon. More improvements on the way.
 
Wolfshanze - you saved me days of free time! Nwo I dont have to mod, I can just make a few tiny adjustments to your mod if i need to and civ4 will have a new life ;-)
BTW I have noticed a few poeple (in that thread and others) were asking about a "modern privateer unit" would you consider adding somethign along the lines of German Commerce Raiders from WW1/WW2 ?
I would say that would add A LOT to the gameplay in modern times...

Oh and thanks for all the hard work in creating the mod - much apreciated :goodjob:

Meaning I could extend the domination of my PE (Privateer Economy) beyond the appearance of frigates??

Yeah I think that the idea is at least worth giving a try. Now I am an experienced Total War modder, I have done some extensive changes to Silent Hunter but as far as Civ goes I havent even adjusted a single digit in xml files so I cant do it myself. At least not without a month or so of learning the ropes, I would love to see Wolfshanze add it to his mod as I fell in love with his mod and I think it would be a great addition apreciated by most players ;-)
