Beyond Earth Factions

aw, c'mon, no love for poor little Andorra? :mischief:
Well, it's likely Andorra would be included as well. Could've been integrated by either Spain or France previously, as well. Or remain independent as some kind of corporate micro-state. :p

I predict that, 200 years from now, Andorra will be a global powerhouse. If I'm wrong, I'll pay each member of these forums $1,000,000.

You sound very sure about this.... Are you building the game?? :p

No, I know absolutely nothing about computer programming. Besides, if I was building the game, my NDA would prevent me from divulging any information.

Well you could be under an assumed name. I'm assuming that regardless of what you say :)

but considering the landmass of russia, I doubt that they will not be back as a major power within the next 200 years.

And after global warming really sinks in, Siberia may well be the world's bread basket.

Not necessarily. There's still the Great Mistake to consider; perhaps, 200 years in the future, France and the Iberian peninsula are all the remain of Europe as we know it. Although that might be giving too much of a definition of what the Great Mistake is, whereas they want to leave it mysterious, so the players use their imaginations and come up with their own theory.

That's another possibility. Someone in this thread even pointed out how dark Europe seems to be in the trailer, unlike Egypt (1:28).

Still, humanity will need to make some very big mistakes if we are to see Brazilians in the space but no Germans.

"Remember back when Europe was one big continent attached to Asia, and not just the British, French, and Spanish islands?" :P

according to this interactive map, if sea levels rose 216 feet, Siberia would be a little damp.
It's not about the sea level, it's about the fact that the majority of Siberia is covered in frozen permafrost ground and permafrost stores quite a bit of water. So when it thaws, the ground might be rather soggy and not necessarily solid ground useful for farming.

I think you misunderstood me. I was agreeing with GeoModder. Siberia being "a little damp" was poorly received sarcasm.

Wow we're learning about that in Honors History class!

Personally I think it is silly for the trailer that it includes Swahilli/Maghreb region, Brasil and France instead of United States, India or China.

I mean... Currently United States is the main superpower and is really dominating the world, and will remain powerful durig 21st century, so the Great Mistake would have to be something really powerful to devastate them entirely.
And it doesn't seem the Great Mistake was nuclear war - well, at least not in 'apocalyptic' manner ('just 30% of people died, not 99% :crazyeye: ) - as we see futuristic Paris which would be one of the first cities to be burned by nukes in case of NATO - Russia - China - Iran - whatever nuclear war.

The lack of China is also strange as it is almost sure this country will be superpower competing with USA during 21st century - and as the Great Mistake doesn't seem to be 'zombie apocalypse killing 99% of humanity' it is hard for me to imagine that 1 200 000 000 people would suddenly stop the fastest industrialisation in the entire human history :p
India is currently in much much worse shape than China, particularly in terms of poverty and economy, but it is still going to be powerful state in 21st century and it also has its own space race.

So, we didn't see these three powerful countries in the trailer; instead we see:
1) France and cute futuristic Paris. Well, obviously Western Europe is pretty much guaranteed to participate in the space race, but I wouldn't bet France divided by giant ideological issues and with massive muslim population growth would be in the imperial shape :D
2) Brasil, which potentially can be superpower but currently it is faaar from it...
3) Swahilli and Egypt. Sorry to say that but generally speaking Africa is not going to rise in 21st century - statistics show that this continent is in really tragic shape and most of it is going to remain in this tragic shape in the future... Well, personally I would still include some pan - African faction in the space expansion, but it would be rather centered on Nigeria/Ghana/Kenya. These countires unfortunately also suck but they are the most developed in the Subsaharan Africa (...this doesn't mean good things for the entire continent :p )

It is not really important as this is only trailer :D just my opinion ;)

In the trailer the US was there. It was with a lady carrying a jar on her head through 3rd world markets of ?New York? (Lexington and 33rd)

Also China is in as part of the PAC

Also this is not set in the 21st century, it is set in the 23rd (200-250 years in future)

200-250 years ago (1764-1814)
The US and China were minor powers (US becoming a non colony, China on its way down to the Opium Wars)
Germany did not exist
Austria and the Ottomans were still major powers
Spain was larger than Russia (controlling 1/2 Americas)
Japan was a hermit kingdom (like N. Korea today)
France and England were mortal enemies

And then there's the Great mistake, even if it kills off only 10% of humanity, what matters is which 10%.

The presence of New York in the trailer, if it's indeed New York (can't recall), is rather puzzling. It throws a wrench into the global warming/sea level rising theory the Pyramids shot seems to hint at. If the ice caps melted to the point the Nile Delta is mostly underwater, NYC couldn't have stayed dry.

Perhaps the Egypt shot just hints at wacky, disrupted climate throwing off the Nile and producing rampant floods. But that seems less interesting.

And we can't really see Rio de Janeiro's ground, so those buildings could be rising from the sea, or everything could be okay.

Maybe they built massive dikes in New York, which lead to displacements and the overcrowding we saw in the trailer.

We can't see the ground in Rio de Janeiro due to the smog clouds hanging low. I somehow doubt that kind of pollution would remain there without a source nearby, which wouldn't exist if things were mostly underwater. And they would if the ice caps had melted, as far as Rio de Janeiro is concerned.

In the end, anything is possible. My guess is the Great Mistake was simply us ignoring the impact of our industrial development on the environment, which led to all sorts of natural disasters and global strife over already dwindling resources. I wouldn't be surprised if there were limited nuclear exchanges, exacerbating the eco-damage, and some nations fractured, ceasing to exist as we know them today.
