Beyond Earth Factions

That's true... so far of the 3 mentioned only one (Brazillia) sounds definitely like a territorial government/nation-state... and we might not have its full name... perhaps it is Brazillia de Resistance (or whatever the Portugese would be for Brazillian Resistance)

'Brasilia' is just the capital of Brazil. It doesn't mean anything else in Portuguese.

8 factions only?

Let's see here,
American Reclamation Corporation
Brasília
Panasian Cooperative
Universal Europa?
Etats l'Africain?
British Royal Empire?
People's Republic of China?
Russian Confederation?

It seems like I'm missing some such as the United Islamic Republic, Japanese Shogunate, and Delhi. Please note that these are pure speculation, so don't hate.

As I mentioned before, I believe that these eight factions will be somehow based on the eight civilizations described by Samuel Huntington in "The Clash of Civilizations". They are: the Western (with Europe, Canada, the US, Australia, New Zealand etc, together), the Sinic (China, both Koreas, Taiwan, Singapore, Vietnam and maybe some Southeast asian nations affected by the chinese diaspora), the Islamic (Middle East, North Africa, Indonesia), the Hindu (India, Nepal, Bhutan), the Orthodox (Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, former Yugoslavia excepting Croatia and Eslovenia, Bulgaria, Romania, Greece), the Japanese (Japan only), and, with less certainty, the Latin American (Latin America and Caribbean, although it may be a part of the Western one), and the Sub-Saharan Africa (which doesn't exactly constitute any cultural unity).

With some needed changes, Japan could be united with the Sinic civ, the US (and maybe the Commomwealth) could split with the Western, leaving continental Europe by itself, the Hindu could be a part of a British Commomwealth along with Australia and New Zealand. This way, every faction will have at least 500~800 million people.

I begin with the assumption that there won't be an unnafiliated nation on Earth, with these eight factions covering the whole humanity. So it has to have cultural and political room for everybody.

Any info on whether this game will have unique abilities, units, buildings per civ like Civ V does?

I want to see the Antarctic Spacebound Faction!!!

Since this is set in the future, global warming made Antarctica habitable and it because a world super power.

While I know it won't probably be a thing

Please Firaxis see the above post, and make this a thing

Literally just about to post that. But yeah, she's supposed to represent the Pan-Asian cooperative according to tomsguide.

Oh and Scandinavian Alliance would be amazing too (for modding, let's see if we can include a Space Harald).

"On this day Poland stronk! Poland can into space!"

"Did Pole remember to pack potato for Latvia?"

In my slightly tired state, I read TPangolin's excellent poster as Operation Flamingo Dingo.

Perhaps all 8 haven't been decided yet and they can take inspiration here :)

I think China wouldn't miss being head of Panasian cooperative. I honestly can't imagine Pan-"asian" coexist as separate entity with China.
If Japan, Korea and SE Asia nation make that kind of cooperative then I can imagine China being like "Such a nice party, mind if I join in?" and there are little that can bond SE Asian with Korean and Japanese but not Chinese.

I wish the factions would be similar to SMAC, like Gaians and Morgans, but if they're going to be based on actual modern civs then here's my list, with their possible links to previous civs: ...
They already mentioned Panasian Cooperative, Brasilia, and American Reclamation Corporation in previews, so it's more around geographic lines this time, I guess more to tie it in as a "Civ" game.

Anarchist and free informationist could be one faction in that list. They can be two as well I guess (Svensgaard and Roze in SMAX).

I'm in the camp that really wants factions based on ideology. I thought it was a really clever idea in the "original" (term used loosely, of course) that skirted around the mystery of what happened to Earth, accounted for people forming friendships and realigning during the transit and at planetfall, and made inherent sense because nobody has any geographical or historical connection to the planet being colonized. Focusing on ideology meant you were building a new world in your image, and thematically it worked.

But hey, so long as it is moddable...

Aww yiss. Operation: Flaming Dingo confirmed.

But hey, so long as it is moddable...

The first major modpack will prolly be the beginning of a total conversion to SMAX, like Planetfall (so many hours drained) in CivIV and the attempt at an AC mod for CivV.
