Beyond the Sword to feature music by Michael Curran (CORRECTED)

According to a forum post on OverClocked ReMix (a game music remix community), the upcoming expansion pack Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword will feature a soundtrack composed by Michael Curran, veteran sound designer at Firaxis.

Jill Goldin (aka pixietricks) is one of the two sopranos selected to sing for this new soundtrack. She mentioned in a reply in the thread that the piece is "looking like a four-minute long, epic choral piece for the main menu screen. "

Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword was announced late last month and will come out in July 2007.

Where did you read about techno music? I only see news about choral music.

Though I am not a big fan of techno, I think it would be hilarious if there was a techno intro for BtS. I would turn it off after the first time I turned it on. But it would be funny for a second.

That's great news. I love the opening song from the civ 4 menu. In my opinion it's the best gamescore i ever listened to (your mileage may vary). Can't wait to hear the new song in the final product.

I agree - and also, I hate the opening music to Warlords (as well as the Orc chieftain waving his sword), and can hardly wait for the time when I won't have to endure them any longer.

I think most of the music in CivIV is historical already existing music. Everything I hear from the medieval period on till modern times was made by composers like Bach, Dvorak etc.

Mmm. I actually don't mind the Warlords theme music, but yeah, it's defintely not on the Baba yetu level of great songs though.

I actually dig the Warlords song. It brings me into this 'Yargh! Let's plunder and kill!' mood and that's what I like best when playing Civ - causing death and destruction.

They rather should study how to make a music not repetitive, because ok, musics are nice, but in some circumtances and with time, they are just becoming a real pain. That is why I desactivate them.

However I have had ideas already in order to play with music implementation.

For example, my brain received serious damage listening the CivII war music in loop, so that i still hear it today playing Civ4. I wish I can hear it again IN REAL LOL... this is the hammer effect I guess. Seriously, a warry music would be cool only when at war with another civ, one for each era. I think I would keep it even in multiplayer, would be motivating and fun.

Another example, why not [...] the music [to pause itself] after some time, because loops can reach nerves some times, particularly in the multiplayer lobby chatting with other people, or simply waiting for players to join a game.

I was alerted to this thread, and so I thought I'd create an account just to correct a little bit of misinformation.

The original poster of the thread on the other forum was incorrect about my involvement in Beyond The Sword. I am not, in fact, the composer for that game. Additionally, I did not write the theme for Warlords. Mark Cromer, one of the very talented staff composers at Firaxis and a great all-around guy, wrote the Warlords theme. So while I do hope to return to the Civilization franchise in the future, thus far my only contributions have been Baba Yetu and Coronation from Civ IV.

I am, however, hard at work on my first album at the moment--a collection of 12 songs in 12 languages, all featuring full orchestra and choir (so in other words, a full album of songs in the same world-music-meets-orchestra style of Baba Yetu). There's still a ways to go on the project, but so far some of the languages represented include Japanese, Maori, Polish, Latin, Sanskrit, Portuguese and many others. We're recording in London in the late summer at AIR studios (the studio created by the legendary Sir George Martin, producer of the Beatles), and the album will be released in the fall.
