BirdNES: 1500 AD: A New World

FROM: Ethiopia
TO: Safavid Persia

We hope that you have not been alarmed by the sudden shift in the balance of power in the eastern Mediterranean. We assure you, our conquest of Egypt was necessitated by defensive concerns. We held no ambitions towards Egypt's land, nor do we now harbour ambitions towards Persia. We hope that this will inaugurate a new era of closeness in the old friendship between Persia and Ethiopia. Please, don't hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns whatsoever, or if you simply wish to discuss the rapidly changing strategic situation. We would not want mutual misunderstanding brought on by lack of communication to poison our dealings.

TO: Portugal

We thank you for your aid, and congratulate you on your success. We are, however, somewhat concerned by the situation in North Africa. Such instability near our new borders is distinctly alarming. Moreover, for all their faults, the old regimes kept the inhabitants, always known for their disrepect for the law, in line. We are somewhat worried that without rapid, decisive action, we will soon see a return to the bad old days of the 10s and 20s, when scarcely a ship in the Mediterranean was safe from their depredations, and we would inquire what action you intend to take to prevent this.

TO: Gujerat

We note that you are taking an increasing interest in your African holdings. We suspect that your recent investment may be a prelude to renewed expansion. If that is the case, we would remind you that many of the peoples of the Horn are under the protection of the King of Kings. We would look with extreme displeasure upon any Gujerati attempt to subjugate them. We urge you to tread carefully in your dealings with them.
I must say however that I strongly disapprove of the new map style (meaning those squares in contested territories).
OOC: I must say I agree.

Hmmm, intersting update.. nice abuse of the new trade rules Alex  :p

OOC: No, it is simply an geopolitical shift in the ways the upper classes of the Khmer Empire views the world as well as new leadership. I'm working on the stories as we speak. After all, after the recent stock exchange incident the Khmer Empire can no longer place all her eggs in one basket.

I must say however that I strongly disapprove of the new map style (meaning those squares in contested territories). IMHO it's both ugly and confusing, as well as redundant as most - nay, all - occupied territories in this time period will naturally tend to chaotically contested between whoever happens to be in the area. Where are my forces located presently, anyway? Are we besieging Berlin, or plotting a siege from afar? "Spring would see the Poles in Berlin"?

OOC: Bird, is the Order black on the map? I somewhat second das's opinon on the map, as you can generally tell which areas have been taken during wars by the land falling outside your borders :). Btw, is Frederick still around Bird? And, if he is, would he be willing to accept the title of the Palatine?

OOC:I must say I agree.
Well it looks like 3 against and 0 for so far. I had a couple of reasons for trying out the checkerboard pattern this update.

1. It extended the already established use of it for rebellions
2. By using it in Silesia I could effect a transfer of that area from Austria to Poland as part of any negotiations and end further whining ;)
3. By showing areas as "conflicted" and not under the control of a specific nation, I hoped to open up the negotiating to less tradtional borders.
4. The checkered pattern also allows me to show multi party influence.

I have posted a new map of Europe that shows how I might have drawn hard borders, so you can see the difference and how territory might be affected. In general the "winners" lost land.

In the new map Kalmar now "owns" Baltic Poland. I was trying to convey ambiguity and the effect that such land was not necessarily "lost".

Aesthetically, I do agree that the checkers are a bit strong; perhaps a softer edged shape would work? If most of you are against it, I will not continue the Checkered effect, but i am open to suggestions for other sways to get to what I wanted to achieve.

OOC: striped areas could be perhaps a better way...

The Order is the fleshy colored land west of Brandenburg and east of the Netherlands.

Germanicus did not send orders last turn, but he did the turn before. I haven't heard from him recently.

EDIT: And yes, the Ottomans do still exist and will have stats and all this turn.

I have several "complicated" pms to answer, but I will put off answering them until after I get the stats finished. Sorry. The greater good and all that...;)

OOC: See how nice I am bird? I won't be sending mine until AFTER the stats are done ;) And what about striped lines instead?!?!

OOC: And what about striped lines instead?!?!
Thank you Alex.
Stripes are very easy to add, but time consuming to remove when using "the Gimp."

Why did North Africa collapse so completely.. everywhere else people conqour.. there, civilizations simply vanish.. even with orders to prevent such things.

An Alex, dont try an bulllshit me with IC reasons, jumping from Asian, to a TP in EVERY available trade area, just be honest for once ok?

Why did North Africa collapse so completely.. everywhere else people conqour.. there, civilizations simply vanish.. even with orders to prevent such things.

Conquest in civilized areas, of similar climate and habitat, that have been neglected by their rulers is far easier than conquering in areas where everything is very different and unknown. Tunis and Algiers have been lived in by Europeans for thousands of years, so when a new army marches in to little resistance, the people are apt to fall in line. there are few if any unknowns.

In Africa and similar places, everything is new including diseases, bugs, animals and even how to farm and what to grow. Those things are not conquered quickly or easily. Everyone will struggle in Africa. Get used to it. ;)

Except africans ;)

You can use their help sometimes. Try thinking of using africans to help conquer africans (weed out the ones who are suckups, get them to teach you about the diseases, cures (no matter how primitive) and other things that you need to know. And then, to encourage that behavior in others, reward them.)

Why are you telling him how to conquer your land?

OOC: That is the IC reason for my actions. And yes, I did jump from simply concentrating on Asia to a TP in almost every single trade area. So what? I'm an absolute monarchy where the Emperor is worshipped as a deity. The Emperor can do what he pretty much wants as long as it doesn't involve killing thousands of people or taxation, it comes with the True Absolute Power.

I am already honest and I have nothing further to discuss with you on this issue :p It's not so much "exploiting" the rules because the rules were meant to encourage people to expand trade networks and you can hardly be exploiting rules when you're doing what the rules are encouraging people to do.

EDIT: FYI, in case you didn't get the tone, I'm in a semi-joking/sarcastic/etc tone.

Its not so much helping him conquer (it would have been pmed if it was) as it is a general statement that works anywhere in the world truthfully. Locals always know best, and people will do anything for money.

OOC: nice update, i liked the poem :D. The name of my TC in Somalia is Bender Cassim. Did I need to name the other one?

IC: Sultana Afia Mahmud Shah is not interested in expanding her land, and would greatly regret any strife she may have caused between our two nations. She is only interested in improving the lives of her people by bettering the land of Somalia.

Bird, what happened to 22 divisions of my army? I'm still a bit confused about the information in the update; new stats are not up yet, right?
