Bizarre tale of boy who used internet to plot his own murder

No more Internet for anyone, shooo-shooo... go home and burn your modems!

I use a broadband modem

I suppose you think broadband-enabled routers don't contain a modem?

As far as I know, fiber (fiber optics? what's the English term for it? :p) relies on no modem. Regarding technical terms and other languages, I'm rather lost...

For some reason this reminds me of an old Asimov short story...

The one where Multivac got tired of the world's problems being dumped on it , and tried to kill itself , and when asked what it wanted the most , replied that it wanted to die ?

What a fool! What the funk!? And what the hell!?

If he hadn't been such a smart ass he could be dead by now  .

The attack left John, a promising grammar school student, close to death.

Police were able to link all the fictional characters back to John because Ms Hogg's analysis discovered common features in the typing style, such as the misspelling of "maybe" as "mybye", of all the characters.

Beyond the bizarre story itself, I found the above quotes from the article peculiar.

How could he be a promising grammar school student, but be so horrible at spelling?!

On top of that, didn't the 16 year old notice that all of these characters were misspelling the same word?!

i dont think they mean that he always misspelled it as mybye, but that the various characters did at one point or another misspell the word maybe, and that was how they all misspelled it.
its not exactly a comon way to misspell the word.
but unless you're specificaly looking to try to link the two characters together, its unlikely you'll notice taht someone you talked to 3 days ago made a similar grammar mistake as the agent you're talking to who's gonan make you a spy.

Um, grammar school is just regular school, AFAIK. It doesn't really have anything in particular to do with grammar. Would you say one was a poor elementary school student if they couldn't name the noble gases? ;)

I don't think they should look at the "dark side of the Internet". They should look at the 14 year old who thought of the stupid thing. ;)

I've read of other things where people actually say in chatrooms, "Hey, make me a victim!". (One guy wound up breaking into the wrong house in one case...) It doesn't make chatrooms the "Dark Side", it just makes the people who are asking for a world of hurt, very very stupid.
