BLA1 - Mystical Monarch

@Blas: We're not expanionist, and so I didn't feel that we'd be able to get a settler from the hunt. I was going to do it, but didn't want to waste another workers turn when we already wasted one. If you want, you can play around with the save and see if we pop one.
And do me a favor? Change your tagline to have dificulty level set to Monarch. You're past regent my friend.;)

@vizurok: I just hit Print Screen and use MS-Paint. It's crude but it works.

I think the very possibility of getting a Settler for free so early is worth the waste of a worker turn, but it doesn't matter anymore. The game's already started, any discussion of how the first turn should have been done is futile.
About the diff level, I know I'm past Regent but I still paly on Regent cause it's balanced just right to be both challening-fun and powertrip-fun... I may try Monarch on singleplayer, but I have my current game to finish and some testing to do on a little mod I'm working on...

Just for my peace of mind, I ran a litttle test on the goodie hunt. 10 times I waited to pop it til I settled.

I got 3 warriors, 6 maps, 1x25 gold. Not once did I pop a settler.

Less then 10% chance of getting a settler if you're not a expansionist civ.

I decided to pop it before the city is formed to see what we get.

4x25 gold, 1 cerm burial, 3 pottery, 1 map, 1 warrior.

Now, from what that little test, and I'll admit it was short, showed me was that by building a city you cut down your chance getting a tech from popping a goodie hut. I didn't recieve 1 settler either way, and the most I got after I built my first city was maps. In fact, I recieved not one tech after I built a city. 2/3s of the time it was maps, 1/3 of the time it was a warrior, and once we got 25 gold. I can keep running the test, but I have a feeling I'll get the same results either way.

Okie doe, so I was wrong. ;P

I got it.

If you're still looking for another player, I'd like to volunteer my services.

With this many people it shouldn't die out like half of the SG's I pick.

I think we have a spot still open Sesn. We've just played our opening movie as well, so it's still nice and early in the game.

You're in. Good timing. :D

Just looked over the thread and start. Looks like we're already in the drivers seat. IIRC, someone said this was a large map, which means we should be able to absolutely pollute our area with settlers once we get up and running.

The only real drawback I see is that a lot of the nearby land will take some serious work before its productive. (marsh, jungle)

I'm not trying to be insulting, so bear with me, but I wanted to point out that we'll probably need to MM our capitol to get the granary the turn before expansion. A seemingly well known thing, but one that seems to get overlooked all too often.

Just my little contribution.

EDIT: BTW, thanks for letting me in. :)

I'm not terribly good at micromanaging...I make sure the best tiles are being worked in my core cities, but...

Yes, I think I pointed it out in my turn log that we'll need to do hold growth for the granary. The good news is that we have a 6 turn spear/settler factory once we get that granary up, and full of food.

The point he's making Smellincoffee is that if the granary is built 1 turn before growth, you get all the benifits of growing with a granary... ie - 10 food is stored. That's how a settler factory is made. 5 extra food a turn, with 6 shields a turn, and the food stored in the granry you can have one built every 4 turns. The best I see us getting, until monarch though is 4 food, and 8 shields, which is a settler/spear every 6 turns. But we have to make sure we built the granry before we grow.

If you guys aren't familar with China, Ision wrote a nice article about 'em. Check if out if you have time. :)

And I think I'll let you guys worry about the settler factory.

That's good to read... will go over it now. And sorry for cross-posting, but Agricitual is soooo powerful in C3C... ask some folks around... cheap granaries, and can even make DESERT useful. You should play one next game, and try and expand quickly in the early game...

As for the settler factory... everyone is going to have to keep an eye on it. Just remember 5+ food, and 6 shields a turn.;)

Playing my turns now.

Just a quick note alerum.

i remember most people call 4000BC turn 0.

so by that reckoning, you only played 19 turns.

(4000BC + 20 turns = 20 turns to start an SG)

That's true... You should play an extra turn to even it out methinks... Any objections?

Sounds fair to me.

I certainly don't care about the extra turn, but to clarify, if you look at the victory status screen, it should say turn 1. Should also say 539 turns remaining.

Again, I really have no objections though.
