BLA1 - Mystical Monarch

pre - turn: Why oh Why is the AI irrigating a bonus grassland :smoke:

I must say that this land does look promising, there is a lot of jungle and swamp, but that will go in time.

shame about the celts being so close to us, we will just have to be a bit more careful, and i can definately suggest getting defence in the capital soon, the ai loves attacking empty cities.

(i know its still very early and they are about as ready for war as we are, but i still dont trust leaving an empty city next to an ai capital).

Turn 1 3000BC: Shanghai founded on the spot the settler was on, set to warrior.

Turn 2 2950 BC: Send warrior north one.

Turn 3 2900 BC: Send warrior east.
Worker builds road.

Turn 4 2850 BC: D'oh ,let the capital riot, lux to 10% :smoke: another reason to get units in cities.
Continue warriors eastward march.

Turn 5 2800 BC: move worker to road the cow near capital.

Turn 6 2750 BC: Shanghai: Warrior -> Worker.
Problem guys, looks like a barb camp has spawned to the SE of the capital and there is no defence, i whip the granary in the capital, then ill switch it to a warrior, to sort its defence out,

Turn 7 2700 BC: Capital: granary -> warrior

Turn 8 2650 BC: discover mysticism, set to poly
Barb pillages the capital, just as the warrior is finished, there will be another warrior in the capital next turn as well, looks like the rng didnt like us, as we had no less than 3 barb warriors coming at us just then.

Turn 9 2630 BC: fortify warrior in capital.
Warrior explores.

Turn 10 2590 BC: Shanghai: worker -> warrior.
Fortify second warrior in capital.

Turn 11: 2550 BC: After that panic attack i just had it seems that the barbs are heading north, i'm sorry guys, ive never had barbs this high before and i couldn't see any other option to rectify the situation, the warrior from the second city would never have got there in time.

Next player, the barbs are obviously higher than roaming, which means we need to be more careful with our defences, hopefully we can still salvage some kind of factory from the capital, or at least get it productive sometime soon.

Good Luck

Here is the save.

Errr... Good set, but you deserve another 10... 20 turns each for the first round. :D
Hopefully the barbs will help us deal with the massive AI clustering. We need to be careful... And this game looks like its gonna be just one massive bloodbath. I'm guessing the world generator was just being plain mean, so we prolly also got a Pangea going on here... =X

you sure you want everyone doing 20 Blas?;) Usually goes 20 the first, 15 the second, and 10 after that... it should set up the turns to be even years.

And the barbs... well, we wanted a random game didn't we?? Shouldn't be a problem with the factory, it just may take a bit more time then I was hopping. Didn't see a single barb that I can remember, so had no need for more then exploration units... harsh there... so let's see... we're the "warmonger" civ, with barbs up high, Celts are right next door, and we have greath growth land, but no real shields... Wanna go for Space Blas?;) I really think this will be a great game that will go down in the history of CivFantatics... if we can live through the middle ages. Make sure you guys check Diplo for trades every turn too!

Well, in DGT2 we played 20 for almost a whole round IIRC, and I think there isn't much of a problem with having a full round of 20 turns apiece.... If you guys wanna go for 10 each already, then I'll pick up the save later today and play mine. :)

Why don't we just do 10? Most of us are in multiple SG's & and some will be playing the new GOTM.

Okie doe.
I'll play my set later today or sometime tomorrow afternoon...

Aww cripes, I completely forgot I was up...
I'll play within 20 hours or so, sorry guys. =\

Initital observations and adjustments:
Start isn't as awesome as we originally thought, that is a HELL of alot of Jungle. At least there's alot of Gems we may be able to monopolize...
The Celts must be destroyed immediately.

IBT:
One barb moves, one fortifies.
2510bc (1):
Move our exploring Warrior south.

IBT:
Unfortified barb keep moving.
2470bc (2):
Have western Worker start roading towards capital.
Exploring Warrior meets an Aztec Settler + Warrior stack just east of us. Boy is this gonna be a bloody game. =S
I am tempted to attack but decide we have little chance of killing this Warrior, and if we don't, we will have even smaller chance of surviving the resulting onslaguht.

IBT:
Aztecs move a bit.
2430bc (3):
Beijing: Archer -> Warrior
Archer attacks fortified barb, wins taking no damage, and getting promoted to Vet. =D
Exploring Warrior moves east along the bottom of the Jungle.
Send a Warrior from Beijing to Shanghai now that we have an Archer in Beijing.

IBT:
Celts move towards us, Aztecs move a bit south to what looks like a nice site for a city.
2390bc (4):
Shanghai: Warrior -> Temple
Set eastern Worker to connect our Gems.
Use new Warrior to attack mobile barb, killing him and taking one point of damage, while going Vet. =D
Move exploring Warrior further east and find Aztec border.
Western Worker completes road to Beijing.

IBT:
Celts move SW.
2350bc (5):
Beijing: Warrior -> Settler
Send exploring Warrior one tile North along Aztec border.
Get western Worker irrigating towards Shanghai.

IBT:
Celts continue SW and hit the coast.
2310bc (6):
Warrior continues exploring Aztec borders.

IBT:
Celts return NE.
Aztecs have founded a city with a Hill, a Lake, Cattle, a BG, and possibly more. =\
2270bc (7):
Warrior continues to probe Aztec borders. (My eyes are going to commit suicide if I keep needing to spot out these borders in Jungle. ><)

IBT:
Celts move further NE.
2230bc (8):
Whoops, Beijing riots. ><
Raise Lux to 20% till our Gems are hooked.
Set western Worker to irrigate roaded Cattle outside Shanghai.
Our Warrior's brave plight to circumnavigate the Aztec territory continues. My eyes protest.

IBT:
Celts move East.
2190bc (9):
Warrior continues.

IBT:
Celtic Warrior moves SE.
2150bc (10):
Beijing: Settler -> Warrior
Settler and Warrior sent towards a nice Forest+Game tile placed so it will not interfere with that Aztec city that I hope we will take eventually.
Warrior hits coast.
Worker reaches Gems and will start roading soon.

Okay, we have to get into gear and kill the Celts and then take that cute Aztec city. Then we pump out workers and claim those Jungles. This game will not be easy.

Good set of turns Blas! Is going to take a while to clear the jungle, but oh boy will it be nice when we do.;) We should try and get the settler pair you just move towards the game to making workers, and keep pumping out settlers out of the captiol... Next... high shield city!

Could someone post a screenie or two?

I'm at work during the day and find it hard to keep up otherwise. (i'm a visual learner:) )

Just realized we prolly shouldn't settle on the Game itself, but SE or NW of it... Vizurok, make sure to settle in one of those two squares, or S or W of the Game... We shouldn't screw up the utilization of terrain in this area, because right now we don't have many other options for good city sites.
We may wanna set up an ICS in the Jungle and abandon some of the ICS cities after we clear the Jungle...

NEVER EVER settle on a bonus resource like game or cattle. You should always try and find the WORSE possible square, or a hill, to settle on. The reason is beause you always get the same base for a city, no matter where you settle. If we settled on the game, would actually loose food... ie- the game would die off... and I'm not sure if we should use ICS, or go the opposite here and do OCP... I've never liked ICS, and with the new corruption model... (shrugs) Will be more productive when we need it the most, and if we can get the settler factory to do it's thing, then we should be able to pump 2 workers and a settler out of our first 2 cities, ever 4-5 turns.... I can't see building much infra until... at least the middle ages... more likely late middle ages.

Looks like Beijing is pulling in 6 shields, with 4 food, and will pull in 8 shields when it grows to 5, but will still only make 4 food per a turn, which as long as we stay below size 7, will be equal to a settler in 5 turns, with a warrior as a buffer for growth, so after this warrior builds we should switch to Settler, then que up warrior settler, warrior settler... We all have to make sure we keep on eye in this city, or it will loose it's potentional.

Warrior, workers, and settlers for as long as we can... We're going to have many a ancient wars on our hands, and no UU until the middle ages, so it's going to be tough... at least we won't have to early a golden age like I've had with Persia more times then I'd like to count....

Blas, when you irigate anything but cattle or game in Despotism, you gain no bonus. That BG in Beijing is going to have to be mined for it to be useful until Monarchy, and we're going to need it until we make a settler factory. It's going to waste 4 turns, but we're going to have to mine that BG before we get off the road, or else it'll cost us 7 turns.

If we do decided to go with ICS, it's still a good idea to leave enough room for the capitol to be able to work at least 12 tiles. Also, building temples, or any culture items aren't very helpful in ICS, unless you plan to be doing ALOT of sharing between cities. Also ICS isn't at it's most powerful when you have very few river squares, so you stay size 6 or smaller in most cities.

My god the Aztecs are close, and so are the celts. I don't know if we have much choice in the matter, I think we're going to be forced to go to war very quickly here, and destroy them, or else we will never be able to fully grow, and I'm still not sure what size map it is... looks like it may be Standard???

We need to send some more settlers towards the south to block off what looks to be a nice pennisula... well, at least we know we have 3 luxuries close at hand.;)

Also, we're on Monarch and we need to use the AI to research for us, so that means checking the diplo screen EVERY turn and making those trades! Right now We can trade the Celts Masonary for Bronze Working. Don't be scared to trade... It's better to do a trade you're not very happy with then not do the trade and not have the option next turn. We're all pretty new at this level of play, so we have to keep an eye on things like happiness and diplo. It's only 10 turns, so take your time, and do everything you possibly can on each turn.
Also, research should be turned down to 10%. We will get Poly in 38 instead of 35, but we'll pull in 6 gpt.... besides at -2gpt for 35 turns, we'll be broken to long... Trust me a tech in 38 with 220 gold is better then a tech in 35 with no gold, especially since we're going to war soon it looks like.:(

Anyone care to make up a dot-map?;);)

Sorry if this post is scrambled was looking at the save as I was typing.

Here's my take on it. The dot with the white center could also move 1 NW, however then the one with yellow should probably move 1 N and 1 NW and will have to be cleared before settling.

Let me know what you think, and enjoy!

If we're going for ICS, should we give feudalism a spin? ;)

Wow, AWESOME idea SC! Don't workers get a bonus in feudalism... or is that facisim? If we did that, we'd have the jungle cleared in 3/4th the time....

And I like the inner ring of the Dot-map Sesn, but don't think we know enough of the outer to try and build as far out as you've mapped.

I think even if we go ICS, it should be in the Jungle only, and not affect our good-terrain cities... We should probably not plan too far ahead right now, because we don't know how the situation is gonna look.
Re Feudalism, that's probably a good idea... I've tried this gov before, and it really is damn powerful, seems very well suited for our situation...

EDIT: Vizurok, the save file should be small enough right now to just attach it to a message.

CivFanatics.net is down, so we can't upload files and such at the moment. :( Just checked the editor, and work speed is normal for feudalism. The bonus is in Fascism.

Edit: I think the server is working now. Try it again! :)
