Blackened Skies

Stalin didn't have a mental breakdown when the Nazis invaded. That's a myth.

the senate of Greece offers Greek crown to Russia

the Senate, wanting a constitutional monarchy, and to guarantee its own safety, and the inability for the senate to choose any leader for the Greeks(no one could agree), instead takes the third option.

the Greek Senate will award the Crown of Greece to the Russian Tsar, and hopes that he will be benevolent and just to the Greek people.

the head of state that the Tsar appoints will take orders from him and him alone, but will act independently if no orders is given.

The Tsar of Russia Peter IV is honored and will accept the crown of Greece. As such, he will now be King of Greece. He states that he will respect the Greek people and their constitution and be benevolent and just.

The King of Greece, Peter IV, after meeting with the Greek Prime Minister and several leading Greek politicians, appoints General Ioannis Metaxas as the new Prime Minister of Greece and by royal decree declares martial law until the war with Italy is over.

new prime minister declares martial law

the war against italy is likely going to be a difficult and bloody battle, for all of the greeks. therefore, I have declared martial law to smooth out the difficulties, rebuild our military, win the war against italy, and bring glory to Greece for the first time since the time of Alexander.

We will make Greece great again.

Stalin didn't have a mental breakdown when the Nazis invaded. That's a myth.

I believe the subject deserves more exposition than that. Of course I don't think he burst into tears and lay on the floor sobbing, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear if he was genuinely, morbidly depressed, and at a loss. That in itself is something. And he definitely went to the dacha. The point anyway is that it is perfectly normal to feel such emotions. I just want to encourage all my players, even those who feel hopeless, to try and try anyway.

Trying is the only thing.

Right. I thought you were referencing the old break-down myth which had Stalin doing nothing for weeks and is therefore explicitly or implicitly responsible for the course of Barbarossa. Your line of argument is better but IIRC there's evidence that Stalin was still issuing orders during that period. When I get time I'll dig up the relevant paper. Montefiore is also a pop history author and not a scholar of the subject. He's quite readable though for all that. The general point is fine.

Montefiore mentions that Stalin was still sending orders through the weeks after the invasion, which I knew. I'd be interested in some scholarly articles though. Honestly the most interesting thing about the article I linked is the suggestion that the entire Soviet political elite was genuinely dismayed by the invasion. What a true human emotion! It really adds a lot to know that Stalin yelled and Zhukov cried. Just like it's interesting to know that after Nimitz appeared to criticize Task Force 34, Halsey sulked for a full hour before reacting. Just sort of drives home the point that history is a story of people.

I can't recollect the name of the paper. But Stalin's human side is quite easily found. He tortured his subordinates by making them watch his favourite films on repeat. He's also meant to have been a prude who cut a French kissing scene from Volga-Volga.

Me picturing Stalin in the room forcing them to watch while he quotes the entire movie from memory.

Also, Aleksandr Ganishin, who worked as a projectionist in Kremlin, mentioned that Stalin loved to watch "City Lights" by Charlie Chaplin and "Tarzan." The legend (or, maybe, true story) about forcing everyone to watch his favorite movies on repeat particularly mentioned Chaplin's "City Lights." But yeah, "Jolly Fellows," "Volga-Volga," "Ivan the Terrible" and some other contemporary Soviet movies were on his favorite watch list.

EDIT: One particular story by director Mikhail Romm (featured in his book "Oral Stories") described how Stalin heavily disagreed with Kliment Voroshilov and vaguely threatened him during a cabinet meeting, then invited him and others to watch Chaplin's "City Lights." During the movie seance, Stalin started smiling and after the movie told Beria to "look after" Voroshilov, because "[Kliment] is a man of our cause; he can be mistaken, but he's ours." So, basically, the story claims the movie uplifted Stalin so much as he decided to not repress Voroshilov. Obviously, it's just an anecdote that cannot be verified, so I view it as a historical legend. Anyway, it's a way to look at one of the worst dictators of the century from a human perspective.

EUROPE

EUROPEAN WAR: BRITAIN INVADES GERMANY

The government of Tom Black, no longer finding the spread of socialism in the European continent acceptable, has taken decisive action to combat this disease by attacking the German Union directly. The Second Army of General Raven embarked from Denmark on August 1st, and seized the Kiel Canal on August 4th from decidedly determined defenders. The British enjoyed surprising success, taking Hamburg with minimal resistance. With the war in Italy nearing completion though, both the CRR and GFA relocated air and land assets to combat the British, and even recaptured Hamburg in the Second Battle of Hamburg. However, at this time, the British under Field Marshall Bradley began its assault on Osnabruck. German intelligence assets were able to uncover the British build up, but believed the British attack was to hit Essen instead of the key rail junction. General Bradley’s Third Army was able to take Osnabruck, forcing the Germans to use Hannover as the new rail junction. The difficulties this caused enabled General Raven to enact the Third Battle of Hamburg, successfully taking the city after a fierce three day battle. A surprise British landing at Bremerhaven did not achieve the goal of taking Bremen, but it did allow for the British to advance further to the west and they are now shelling the city. As 1937 settles to an end, the situation seems like it could go either way. Both the GFA and the CRR continue redeploy troops and aircraft from Italy to help mitigate Britain’s air and armor superiority. The CRR’s General Pixis in particular has been able to inspire his troops to particular incredible feats, though he has certainly met his match in Marshall Bradley. And with the capture of Hamburg, Britain is able to freely deploy troops directly into Germany. Whatever happens, Europe will likely never be the same again.

The United Kingdom suffered around 159,000 casualties. In the air, they lost 41 Tac Bombers, 290 Lt-Fighters, and 178 Hv-Fighters. (-6 Land Power)
The Collective Republic of the Ruhr suffered around 102,000 casualties. In the air, they lost 202 Lt-Fighters, and 114 Hv-Fighters. (-3 Land Power)
The German Federalist Alliance suffered around 34,000 casualties. In the air, they lost 190 Lt-Fighters, and 91 Hv-Fighters. (-2 Land Power)

EUROPEAN WAR: ASSAULT ON FORTRESS BELGIUM
Cendron, Belgium

The French military, in conjunction with operations planned with their German allies, began an invasion of Belgium. While the Germans were well prepared for their actions, the French were decidedly not. The French invasion of Belgium petered out after only two weeks of fighting, and spent the remainder of the year focused on defending against counter attacks. The French General Roger Astruc has been accused of incompetency, and many in Germany are calling for a renewed assault on Belgium. In Astruc's defense, Belgium is defended by a strong network of fortifications that have been built up since the 20s, and many in the French establishment have defended Astruc ardently.

The French Social Democratic Republic suffered around 40,000 casualties. In the air, they lost 19 Tac Bombers, 85 Lt-Fighters, and 15 Hv-Fighters. (-2 Land Power)
The Republic of Belgium suffered around 43,000 casualties. (-10 Land Power)
The United Kingdom suffered around 16,000 casualties. In the air, they lost 75 Lt-Fighters, and 4 Hv-Fighters. (-1 Land Power)

TSAR PETER IV ASSASSINATED

St. Petersburg, Russia

A clique of conservative aristocrats, long suffering under Tsar Peter’s aggressive actions and erratic foreign policy, have at last made their presence known. With the use of a few sympathetic regiments, they were able to overwhelm the palatial guard troops and, in confused fighting, the Tsar himself was mortally wounded. As the Tsar lay dying, a quick court was set up to declare him guilty of misrule and was killed with a bullet to the head. The aristocratic coup made a move to secure the Tsar’s young son, the new Tsar Constantine II, but the military and the Orthodox Battalions, loyal to Peter’s policies, initiated a counter coup. The aristocrats were quickly crushed, and the conspirators were either imprisoned or executed on the spot. With the conspirators dead, the Tsar’s son has been crowned the new Tsar, and his mother Wilhelmina has been declared regent. In turn, she has empowered a regency council, controlled by the generals that were the most loyal of the Tsar’s followers, including some German generals too. This group has reached out to General Gerlach Trautmann to head the regency council, though he is currently occupied in China. Georgy Chicherin has become the civilian head of government, but the reality is that he holds almost no power compared to the Council. For the most part, the Russian people, both the free farmers and the new money capitalists, are very supportive of the regency’s actions, and hope that the regency is what Russia needs to suppress the rebellions in the western provinces, as well as win the war in China.

WAR BETWEEN SOCIALIST INTERNATIONALE AND PORTUGAL, UNITED STATES
Lisbon, Spanish Republic

After years of near misses and antagonization, the Portuguese and Spanish border saw its biggest flare up yet. It was unclear who started firing first, but it soon escalated out of control into a full fledged war. The Spanish were actually able to seize the initiative, but American forces were able to deliver a heavy blow at the Battle of Castelo Branco, using the medieval castle as cover to beat the Spaniards back. However, the American force was simply unprepared for the large numbers of French troops that entered the war on the Spanish side. The US forces were defeated at Almeirim, though they fought so valiantly that one division was bestowed the title “Rock of the Targus”. US forces were forced to retreat south to Sines though, and were cut off from Lisbon, which the Portuguese defended to their last soldier. The US fleet was able to evacuate most of the American troops, as well as some Portuguese, to Morocco as a saving grace, but the damage to Portugal has been immense, including the loss of the Portuguese King. It is unclear what the French and Spanish occupying forces intend to do with the country. Towards the end of the year, Moroccan forces joined in with their allies in Portugal and the USA to take some strikes against French Algeria, but French border troops were able to repel their initial assault.

The Kingdom of Portugal suffered around 84,000 casualties. (-24 Land Power)
The French Social Democratic Republic suffered around 78,000 casualties. (-2 Land Power)
The Spanish Republic suffered around 56,000 casualties. (-8 Land Power)
The United States suffered around 20,000 casualties. (-0 Land Power)
The Sultanate of Morocco suffered around 1,500 casualties. (-3 Land Power)

ITALIAN FORCES SEIZE GREECE; ROME, ITALIAN PENINSULA FALL TO GERMANY
Rome, Occupied Italy

It seems the King’s claim that Italy would fight from Sicily will be tested. Italian troops, digging in north of Rome, gave near everything they had to stop the Germans, but it was simply not enough. German airpower and armor were able to punch through the Italian defenses, suffering most of their casualties in the fighting for Rome, where the Italians had some hastily constructed defenses. The Italians attempted to establish a secondary line, however harassment from German airpower and armor made the task difficult, and the Germans were still able to break through, overrunning the remainder of the peninsula. The Italian King, as well as the Catholic Pope, were able to evacuate to Sicily with some of the Italian forces in operation, but the Italians are truly in a desperate situation. The socialists rejected an offer of a place in a unity government, and instead have approached Germany to form a socialist government for Italy.

There is somewhat of a bright spot for Italy though. Seeing the Hellenic Republic as a route to score an easy victory, Italy shifted over 100,000 soldiers to the region and were able to overwhelm the Hellenic Army with relative ease. Some Greek units have gone underground, but they have no real capacity to fight back against Italy, their only hope being the Russian Tsar and his regents.

The Kingdom of Italy suffered around 90,000 casualties. (-2 Land Power)
The Collective Republic of the Ruhr suffered around 47,000 casualties. (-1 Land Power)
The German Federalist Alliance suffered around 44,000 casualties. (-2 Land Power)
The Hellenic Republic suffered around 57,000 casualties. (-21 Land Power)

FREE BULGARIA DEFEATED
Sofia, Bulgaria

With little ceremony, the last of Free Bulgaria has been defeated. The Transitional Authority has declared victory over the remnants of the old regime. The Bulgarian Vizer has declared that Bulgaria will always stand by Turkey and look to Turkey for guidance. In a speech he declared “Bulgaria sees Turkey as the light of this world, and we will forever be loyal to them for showing us the true path forward”. Pro Turkish policies have been implemented in Bulgaria even further, with schools portraying the Ottoman occupation as a great positive, and the Turkish language is being taught ahead of the Bulgarian language in schools. Bulgaria’s future seems bright under the Turkish yoke, or so the Bulgarian propagandists will have you believe.

STATE INDUSTRY EXPORTS IN GFA TAKE HIT FROM WAR
Berlin, GFA

The GFA’s state industries, seeing a record level of investment from the government itself, had a rocky year. State companies saw some excellent initial success in the early year, seeing its highest level of exports ever. Russia and Turkey fueled most of this buying, primarily for industrial goods, but also for high quality consumer goods. However, with the advent of war with Britain, the state industries have shifted more towards war material needed to fight the fascist tide. Still, if the GFA survives this war, they know their state industries can do quite well even outside fellow socialist nations.

SHOOTOUT IN TYROL BETWEEN RED SPIDERS, POLICE, AND THE WHITE WOLF!
Tyrol, Collectivist Republic of the Ruhr

A major breakthrough in the White Wolf case occurred with the CRR’s secret police “cracking” the White Wolf’s bombing methods. Capturing mailmen uniforms, the White Wolf was able to deliver bombs to various targets from the safety of a workshop in Tyrol. Upon discovering his methods, the CRR’s security forces, in conjunction with the allied gang of the Red Spiders, converged upon the White Wolf’s hideout. A shootout ensued between them and the White Wolf’s guards, and the White Wolf has been forced to flee for his life. The White Wolf’s network has been mostly dismantled, but the White Wolf himself is in hiding, with security forces keeping an eye out for a surprisingly fit 64 year old man. While the White Wolf himself is no longer a real threat on his own, he has inspired other anarchists to take up the call to bomb.

127 SOLDIERS DEAD IN NUREMBERG BOMBING; TERRORIST ATTACKS ON THE RISE IN GERMANY
Nuremberg, Germany

A new theater of war has opened up against the German Union! Tensions over the continued occupation of Austria and the “betrayal” of Bavaria has seen an increase of terrorist attacks throughout Germany. Primarily military and party targets have been hit, as the terrorists seek to avoid hitting civilian targets in fear of losing sympathy of potential collaborators. The police in both the GFA and the CRR have heightened security measures for those with a Bavarian or Austrian accent, but the sheer amount of ideological intermingling throughout the past decade has made this tactic less than effective. Many who carry a Bavarian accent can still have great loyalty to Collectivism or Futurism, while Saxons and Hessians can hold sympathy for Bavarian style socialism. And of course, there are still those who want the Kaiser back who are willing to make common cause against the current regimes. The CRR and the GFA’s secret police are the most effective in the world, and have stopped over thirty terrorist attacks in this year alone, but warn that the terrorists only need to get lucky once, and Nuremberg, for today at least, is that once.

WALLOONS RELOCATED TO THE UNITED KINGDOM
Inverness, United Kingdom

The Walloon population of Belgium, long seens as a French and socialist Fifth Column, have been moved! As war with the Socialists became more and more apparent, the Walloons were seen as a strategic liability. The United Kingdom began relocating many of them away from the borders and then shuttled them across the English Channel to work in Britain’s mines and factories, helping Britain free up a few more divisions for the fight against Germany and France.

BRUTAL SLOG CONTINUES IN EASTERN EUROPE
Bucharest, Russia

Russia continues its pacification campaign in the west with horrifying new measures of brutality. Gone is the old offer of evacuation, and Russian troops are intentionally hitting civilian targets, declaring them to be one and the same as military targets. Despite its focus on Poland, it was the region where Tsarist forces had the least amount of success, and even lost the city of Krakow. However, as the Russians suffered from ill fortune on one front, they had good fortune on others. The Romanian Iron Guard was completely destroyed this year in fighting, and some civilians who avoided capture by the Russians were able to escape into Romania. In a pitched battle outside Budapest, the Order of the Maiden too was nearly destroyed, and only has a few fighters to do battle with. Many observers feel that unless Germany or another power intervenes for Poland, the nation is not likely to survive for much longer.

The Russian Empire suffered around 21,000 casualties. (-0 Land Power)
The Order of the Maiden suffered around 9,000 casualties. (-4 Land Power)
The Romanian Iron Guard suffered around 12,000 casualties. (-4 Land Power)
Free Poland suffered around 7,000 casualties. (-1 Land Power)

RUSSIAN DEATH CAMPS IN POLAND?
St. Petersburg, Russia

An anonymous source within Russia has revealed a potentially horrifying reality in Russian occupied Poland. The so called “civilian evacuation zones” have been alleged to be death camps, where Poles are murdered in the tens of thousands using Bolivian gas. Internationally, the story has gained some traction, but it's mostly a niche piece, due to either concerns closer to home or due to the fact that there is no definitive proof of the camps aside from an anonymous source and hazy photographs. Still, for the Poles and others rebelling against the Tsar’s authority, it gives them yet another reason to fight to the last man.

ASIA
AUSTRALASIA’S DECLARATION: DOES TOM BLACK SMELL A REVOLT?
Sydney, Australasia

The new government of Australasia has experienced growing pains as it tries adjusting its place in the world. While embracing a more democratic style of governance is popular at home, the United Kingdom is not yet prepared to let Australasia “act as if it has no obligations to the Empire”. While Australasia maintains Queen Marie as head of state, most power is in the hands of the Prime Minister. This was on full display when the Australasians pursued diplomatic treaties and even an alliance with both Spain and Latin America, the former of which is also a nation aligned with the Socialist sphere. While no statement has officially been made, Tom Black is reportedly furious, and has contemplated declaring Australasia in rebellion. For their part, Australasian business leaders have lobbied the Prime Minister desperately to assure Britain that the case is otherwise, for a split with Britain would severely damage the Australasian economy. With war in Europe and China, Australasia may soon find itself presented with difficult choices going forward.

CHINESE CIVIL WAR HEATS UP ONCE MORE

The Great Chinese Civil War has started yet another phase, pitting the Zhao Dynasty against the National Han Republic of China. Both sides seemed ready for this conflict, and the opening salvos of the war were some of the bloodiest battles of the twentieth century. The Battle of Poyang Lake, in particular gained notoriety, with the Zhao taking massive casualties en route to a victory. In the south, the fighting has been incredibly slow, due to the terrible state of infrastructure near the border, and neither side has made particularly impressive gains. Both sides have been careful with doing collateral damage, in fear of both alienating civilians and losing the precious few roads and bridges in the region. In the north, the Russians joined the fray on the side of the Zhao. General Trautmann was able to overrun Sinkiang with relative ease, but his armored pincer movement in Manchuria was quickly stopped. Han defenses had been built up since the last Russo-Han war, and their deep trench lines and tank pits were able to stop them dead in their tracks. The Han were even able to initiate a counter attack, and are only a few hundred kilometers but are a significant distance away from the high value target of Port Arthur.

The Zhao Empire suffered around 167,000 casualties. In the air, they lost 28 Tac Bombers, 135 Lt-Fighters, and 15 Hv-Fighters. (-9 Land Power)
The Han Republic suffered around 295,000 casualties. In the air, they lost 30 Tac Bombers, 95 Lt-Fighters, and 9 Hv-Fighters. (-4 Land Power)
The Russian Empire suffered around 128,000 casualties. In the air, they lost 5 Tac Bombers, 87 Lt-Fighters, and 9 Hv-Fighters. (-2 Land Power)

BATTLE OF THE EAST CHINA SEA

The Republican and Imperial fleets clashed in a fierce naval battle in the East China Sea. Admiral Zhou of the Imperial fleet did have fewer numbers of ships, however his strength came not from his ships, but from his land based aircraft. Zhao fighters were able to stave off the NRC’s aircraft, and deliver direct hits upon the Republic’s capital ships. In total, over half of the capital ships went down not to naval fire, but rather to aircraft. Admiral Fong of the Republican Navy opted to retreat, his hope of shelling the Imperial coast delayed for now. Naval observers in the region have noted this, and for elite nations this highlights the desire even more for Italian style carriers.

The Han Republic lost 26 Capital Ships and 54 Screens. In the air, they lost 13 Tac Bombers, 115 Lt-Fighters, and 29 Hv-Fighters.
The Zhao Empire lost 22 Capital Ships and 38 Screens. In the air, they lost 5 Tac Bombers, 105 Lt-Fighters, and 17 Hv-Fighters.

DIAO INITIATES COUP
Nanjing, The National Han Republic of China

With conflict once again gripping the Republic, Generalisimo Hu Diao knew that it would once again fall to him to save the Republic. Knowing that Zhuten lacked the ability to save the Republic, Diao marched on the Presidential Palace with a battalion of loyal soldiers. As Diao’s forces marched into Nanjing, units under the command of a commissar dug in, prepared to stop the coup. However, Diao marched in front of the soldiers, declaring “I have no wish to turn Han against Han. If you wish to stop me, then shoot me now, but know that when you do, you shoot the hope of the Republic.” The commissar hesitated before allowing Diao to seize the palace and place Zhuten under house arrest. Diao has declared absolute power for “the duration of the emergency” and has put himself to the task of defeating his former mentor once and for all.

GOVERNOR GENERAL TREVELYAN’S MEMORIAL SERVICE INCLUDES CONSPICUOUS NO SHOWS
Bombay, British India

The unfortunate downing of the ship carrying Governor General Trevelyan was a day of sadness and mourning, for both the British population of India, as well as reformist Indians. However, for the Princes of India, it seems they had other things on their mind. When Governor General Trevelyan’s memorial service was held, only a handful of the most loyal Princes arrived for the ceremony. Some sent representatives, but most ignored the event altogether. It is clear that they are hoping for an end to the old regime’s policies, and with Barge as acting Governor General, that hope is delayed for now.

GAO OCCUPIED!
Gao, Occupied Portuguese India

Crisis in India! In a strange case of international relations meeting colonial law, an Indian couple living in Gao ran afoul of the Indian Education Act of 1934 when they “kidnapped” their niece from British India. The Portuguese military police attempted to find the girl while negotiating with the Rajah's troops but, after two hours of no success, the Rajah’s troops, under orders from acting Governor General Barge, marched into the city, where the Portuguese immediately surrendered. Indian troops have set up a mostly benign occupation, but the Portuguese ambassador has lodged a formal protest in London, and the entire incident has cast a shadow on General Barge’s career and competence in Britain’s view.

TRUE INDIA MOVEMENT SEIZES RADIO STATION, HOSTAGES; TWENTY FOUR HOUR SIEGE LEADS TO SIXTY DEATHS
Pune, British India

The True India Movement, after spending a year consolidating support and arms, has made the first of its moves against the Rajah. In Pune, the soldiers of True India seized a BBC India radio station and held the mostly British crew hostage while announcing their emergence as a force. In their announcement, they called for an end to British rule and for Indians to “open their eyes to their slavery”. Of particular note was the denouncement of the schooling program, and a call for Indians to “murder every English teacher they can find”. The Rajah’s troops surrounded the station and, after a day long siege, decided to attack the station. The True India fighters killed several of their hostages and some of the Rajah’s troops, but in the end, all the True India fighters were killed. Both sides have honored their dead as martyrs and opinions have hardened on both sides. It seems this is only the start of disturbances in the Raj.

FIFTY ONE TEACHERS SLAIN IN THE STREETS
Throughout British India

The BBC Pune incident gave many conservative Indians a rallying cry to get behind, especially with its call to murder English teachers. None were killed in the schools though; instead, the killers would ambush the teachers on their way to and from work or even within their own homes. With fifty one dead already, many teachers are calling for armed protection, as the killings show no sign of slowing down.

NEW IMPERIAL IDEOLOGY IN FORCE FOR THE ZHAO
Canton, Great Zhao

The Great Emperor of the Zhao has instituted a new ideology for his domain, perhaps in hopes of providing an inspiring narrative against nationalism and liberalism. The Emperor is presenting a China that is in tune with its traditions, but is not necessarily bound to them. This conservative, but not reactionary, ideology has won many plaudits within the Empire. Even in Vietnam, many of those who were opposed to the changes the French implemented in the name of modernization have found reasons to support the Emperor, and some have even taken up arms against the guerilla fighters in the south. While the war has meant that few funds are available for these projects, many feel that they are laying the foundation for a bright future for the Zhao dynasty.

BRITAIN CALLS FOR THE ARREST OF GENERAL BARGE
Bombay, British Raj

Following the crisis in Gao and the BBC Pune incident, the British government has lost confidence in General Marcy Barge to act as Governor-General. With approval of the Queen, General Gordon Grumman has been appointed as Governor General of India. As a noted non-Fascist, it was hoped that General Grumman would be able to peacefully convince General Barge to stand down and face a military trial for his conduct in the Gao Crisis. He has sent a Captain to negotiate on his behalf for the specifics of Barge’s trial, but has made it clear that, if necessary, he will use the troops he has in Egypt to force the removal of Barge. It is now Barge’s decision on what to do, with the knowledge that his actions may very well determine the fate of the Empire.

ZHAO WITHDRAWS FROM THAILAND
Bangkok, Kingdom of Thailand

With the Zhao unexpectedly and unilaterally withdrawing from Thailand, many were shocked that events took such a sudden turn. Many expected a wide scale civil war, but the survival of King Rama IX , who went into hiding during the Zhao’s invasion, returned to Bangkok and several former generals moved quickly to give him support. The Buddhist temples and monks, all of whom suffered greatly during the Zhao invasion, also supported the King when he made clear that he still endorsed the policy of state Buddhism. Thailand has returned to some order at least, but the reality is that the King’s authority barely is heard outside of Bangkok, and the country is rife with bandits and starvation. It will be a challenge, but the Thai people have endured much and many are confident that the King can guide them through these challenging times.

JAPAN IN REVOLT
Kyoto, Japanese National Front

After decades of oppression and subjugation by Western powers, the people of Japan, led by the enigmatic Kyoto Group, have at last declared a rebelllion against the forces of the United States. With over 100,000 men under arms, the newly proclaimed Japanese National Front has seized Kyoto and has since spread throughout the country, overrunning key American arsenals and fortresses. Factories have been liberated and whites have been slaughtered, with the Japanese flag being waved proudly for the first time in decades. While the Home Guard units of the Americans have been easily overrun, the actual Army forces of the United States have pulled back towards Tokyo and the sympathetic Tokyo Cartel. The American Viceroy, fully aware of the situation in the homeland, has called on the American President to work with the Tokyo Cartel in hopes of restoring order and American rule to the region.

FILIPINO REBELS
Manila, United States of America

Seizing the moment of American distraction, the Filipino rebel fighters, in a force known as the New People’s Army, have struck once more against the American occupiers. On the outlying islands, the NPA has been able to seize near total control, overrunning the various garrison forces, while the US regular units have fortified themselves in Manilla. The US Viceroy has called for reinforcements, feeling unsure about his ability to hold off the rebels in a protracted siege.

AFRICA

FASCISTS TAKE DECISIVE ACTION
Cape Town, South Africa

Ironically enough, the first ever government able to win both the Anglo and Dutch white vote has deduced that one of its most dangerous enemies would be fellow white men. The newly formed Ridders von Afrika, literally the Knights of Africa, RA for short, has taken to the country and has rounded up various known white liberals, anarchists, and any others who might resist the new regime. The RA has presented itself as an order of chivalry, which, to proper gentlemen, seems a bit strange considering their job is more bashing heads than protecting the weak, but it has made for excellent propaganda for the masses. Of course, dangerous blacks have also been rounded up. The move has been very popular, and the South African Fascist Party is seeing record high approval ratings.

THE AMERICAS

RIOTS IN CARACAS SUPPRESSED BRUTALLY
Caracas, Colombia

With Yankee influence on the downswing throughout the continent of South America, the last bastion of their influence is in Colombia. Colombian elites, long enjoying the privileges of association with the United States, including their control over Venezuela, have been keen to preserve the status quo in this tumultuous time. Venezuelans, angry about their poor standard of living, embarked on a march on Caracas but were quickly dispersed. Still Colombia’s president, knowing that American assistance could be more difficult to procure in the months to come, has promised better access to food and clean water for the poorest Venezuelans in hopes of delaying any further revolution.

AMERICAN CIVIL WAR

The American Civil War, a boogeymen long used as a reason to keep the Democrats in power, has begun in earnest. The most intense fighting of the war, and the national spotlight settled upon the Potomac River, with the Enclave and the Federal government battling for control of the District of Columbia. The Enclave scored an excellent victory at the Battle of Bull Run, but found its advance to be bogged down due to the difficult terrain and the impressive urban sprawl. Federal troops made the Enclave work for every inch of ground they took, and even as the Federal troops advanced through the Carolinas, the Enclave poured everything into taking Columbia, and was rewarded when they were able to capture the White House. However, the Enclave was not able to enjoy this victory for long. Most of the Enclave’s political leadership was captured when Federal troops scored a victory at Cold Harbor. General Armstrong refused to surrender though, and Federal troops bombarded DC without impunity. Over one million, civilians and military alike, lost their lives in the two battles for DC, but at the end, perhaps the most dangerous of the rebel movements was decisively defeated.

While the Federal troops gained a great victory in DC, they saw defeats in the other theaters. The forces of the Great Plains were overran by the American Reclamation Movement, but not before they inflicted significant casualties on the invaders. Meanwhile the People’s Liberation Army was able to secure the last of both the former regions of Illinois and Missouri, and has set upon taking Columbia, though little progress has been made on that front as of yet.

Perhaps the most significant Federal defeat though came at Gotham City. With the focus on defending DC, Gothamite commanders found themselves at times undermanned in the efforts of defending the city. Militia forces from patriotic Gothamites did help for some time, but in the end, the New Englanders were able to seize control of the city. Still, the people of Gotham have not taken it quietly; stay behind forces and civilians alike have taken shots at the New Englanders, and the destruction of Arkham Asylum during the battle caused some of the most dangerous Americans in the nation, including former governor of Tidewater Keith Hamil, to escape into the night of Gotham.

The United States suffered around 311,000 casualties. (-14 Land Power)
The Republic of New England suffered around 53,000 casualties. (-2 Land Power)
The Enclave suffered around 263,000 casualties. (-31 Land Power)
The People’s Liberation Army suffered around 3,000 casualties. (-0 Land Power)
The American Reclamation Movement suffered around 38,000 casualties. (-11 Land Power)

“LIBERTARIANISM” BORN IN AMERICA; AN IDEOLOGY OF AMERICAN STRENGTH AND EXCEPTIONALISM

“America is unique among all nations, because the American is only a believer. It is not a person of one class or another, it is not a person of one party or another, it is not a person of one race or creed or another - it is a person who believes. That is all it takes, and all it has ever taken.” So begins the pamphlet published by President Wayne himself, as a manifesto of his new ideology of Libertarianism. Wayne argues that Americans are resilient lovers of hard work, freedom, and democracy, and that these values - not the vanities of pampered aristocrats, and not the petty complaints of the progressives - are what makes America strong, and that enshrining these ideals in a strong leader and government allows for the bold and decisive action necessary to protect the fragility of liberty. The pamphlet comes at a poignant time, not too far removed from the capture of the District of Columbia and the destruction of the White House and the Capitol, and in an age of seemingly endless strife. More and more, the question spreads, unanswered, of what it really is to be an American, as more wonder if it was a dream too good to be true. Still, recruitment rates at Federal recruitment centers have never been higher.

BRILLIANT TANK COMMANDER EXPOSED AS WOMAN IN DISGUISE; COURT-MARTIALED PENDING EXECUTION BEFORE DIRECT INTERVENTION FROM WAYNE: “SHE SAVED YOUR ARSES”

The fighting in northern Allegheny, the territory that used to be known as Virginia, occurred mainly near a valley that exposed the advancing Enclave column’s position. Colonel Augustus Autumn, commander of the storied Enclave 8th “Hellfire” Corps, laid an ambush at the other end of the valley, expecting the Federal commander to take the bait, as it was too useful a target to ignore. However, the Federal commander was General Tintin Eisley, a studious man whose command of reconnaissance was beyond reproach. Eisley recognized that Morris had prepared a trap, and instructed his men to go the long way, hoping to catch Morris off guard and finally put an end to the 8th Corps. Eisley commanded the 23rd Support Division, consisting mostly of tanks which were serving in support roles, and the heavy guns which the rest of the army corps relied on, to occupy the heights and prepare to advance through the valley.

However, Autumn, perhaps realizing that Eisley had caught on to him, or perhaps becoming impatient, ordered the 8th Corps to attack across the valley. In fact, it was quite easy for Morris to ascertain the 23rd Supports had been left undefended, as they had been ordered to occupy the heights - a move approved by most, but hotly contested by a young but competent tank commander in the command brigade, Capt. Rose. When the 8th Corps attacked, the command brigade was caught by several lucky shells from the initial enemy salvo, and the 8th Corps infantry began to storm the heights.

It was then that Capt. Rose took command of a stunned brigade and, thus, the entire division, by shouting into her integrated communication module to “Attack! Attack! Attack!”

In fact, Capt. Rose directed the 23rd tanks to blast directly through the center of the enemy advance. The effect was dramatic: the entire 8th Corps broke in short order, with one observer later recounting that “it seemed almost as if a thing out of time, and reminded me of nothing so much as cavalry breaking through a throng of infantry.” Although the 23rd tanks suffered heavy losses, the move allowed Eisley’s men to completely dismantle the 8th Corps with minimal casualties besides. When it was identified the tank commander who took command of the situation was wounded, it was discovered they were actually a woman.

Rose was revealed to have cut her hair, bound her chest, and deepen her voice in order to serve in the army, and had apparently done so for 7 years with nobody realizing. When word of this got out, it was announced that she had been court-martialed (without so much of the courtesy of even inviting her to her own court-martial) and was slated for execution by firing squad.

However, the stunningly immediate reaction of President Wayne to this news forced the entire news cycle to halt. President Wayne ordered that the court-martial be withdrawn, or all those involved in the decision would be “held in contempt” and “sentenced for treason.” The general staff, unsure of the true extent of Wayne’s powers after the recent slate of war powers acts, quickly acceded, and Capt. Rose was given an honorable discharge.

President Wayne has issued a formal apology on behalf of the U.S. government to Capt. Rose, who is reportedly “overcome with grief” and “sick, ailing” about being unable to serve her country. “She said she only felt alive when she was commanding a tank,” her mother, a kindly old woman from Cairo, told reporters. “Now she is not sure what she will do.”

President Wayne has commissioned several white papers and military reports from Capt. Rose so far. Capt. Rose has been a tank commander for 3 years and has served in the U.S. Army for 7 years. Although she never formally attended school, she is reported to be an “avid reader.”

Whatever our readers may think about this or that, there is no denying that some words are above this sentence. However, I am just a humble reporter. It’s not my job to share my opinion on anything.

MEXICAN CIVIL WAR AT A STAND STILL
Mexico City, Mexico

Both the Emperor and Ignacio continue to stare at one another, eager for the final clash. Gathering their forces, they know the final battle soon approaches. Ignacio has liberated a few more camps but knows that his army cannot be sustained in Oaxaca forever. He knows that if he does not attack Mexico City now, then his army may soon be on its last legs, as it is too large to be supplied for long.

BRAZILIAN ECONOMY FACES MAJOR RECESSION

The ongoing U.S. blockade, even though it is complicated by extenuating circumstances around the world, continues to impose sanctions on Brazilian shipping that a formerly open border with Argentina did not help alleviate. The sudden rising of tensions with Argentina and the establishment of a cold war with Colombia has seen Brazil’s economy completely isolated in a time when it desperately needs investment. Deprived of valuable capital and the lifelines of Brazilian sealanes, the Brazilian economy faced a major contraction this year. Despite the government’s laborious attempts to rebuild broken infrastructure, these efforts have crawled to a halt amidst complete economic standstill, stagnation, and incipient starvation.

TURKISH IDENTITY STRONGER THAN EVER

Victory in Serbia and Bulgaria, a successful rocketry program and a powerful and mighty leader. What more could the Turkish people want? Perhaps only to continue their conquests so others might enjoy the success that they have seen as a part of the Turkish nation. Pride in being a Turk has never been higher, and they are showing that to their government. Turks are willing to do anything necessary to further the glory of their state, and to spread the light of Turkey.

JEANNE MARCO: LIBERATOR OF SOUTH AMERICA

Jeanne Marco has joined a pantheon of Latin American heroes, and is being hailed as “El Libertador”. His execution of fascists and monarchists alike have been very popular, but now that he is running a nation spanning nearly all of South America, Jeanne Marco will need more than just anti-royalist sentiment to keep his nation together. He will need to build roads, grow crops, and keep the peace if he hopes to bring this diverse nation together. If he does, his legacy will surpass even that of Bolivar. Whatever the case, the people of Latin America are behind Jeanne Marco, for now at least.

Latin America loses half of its Inertia.

Wow! Okay, nobody move…! All right, you can all move again. No doubt many of you are wondering about what’s going on with the stats. I’ll post an in-depth description soon, but basically all military stats have been devolved into a few simple stats:

Deployment: The percentage of your total military capacity you currently have, armed and ready. Deployment naturally creeps towards your Mobilization at a rate that changes based on your country’s policies.
Army: A set of stats comprising the “doctrine” that dictates your force composition. More on this below.
Doctrine Archtype: Which major archtype your country’s doctrinal approach fits in.
Navy: A simple listing of the major ships under your command.
Wing: A simple listing of the air battle systems under your command.

The Army stats can be increased by spending AP. By default, an Army stat costs 1 AP. Hence, if you have Mass 2, you are spending 2 AP to benefit from the effort Mass 2 represents. This way you can customize your doctrine by distributing AP wherever you think you need.

Mass: This represents an effort on production and building up. This decreases the cost of deployment growth and increases its speed.
Firepower: This represents an effort on bigger guns and more devastating weapons. This makes your soldiers more lethal and more shockworthy.
Movement: This represents an effort on mobile forces, flying columns, and motorized logistics. This makes your army faster and better at obtaining good maneuver.
Support: This represents an effort on support forces, like signal companies, engineer corps, and field hosptials. This makes your army a little better at everything.
Integration: This represents an effort to synchronize your forces, not only with each other but with other aspects of your military. This makes your army more expensive but improves complex operations and operational robustness.
Discipline: This represents an effort to enforce troop loyalty. This makes your soldiers tougher and less likely to break and run.

The four doctrine archtypes are mostly descriptive, but help illustrate what type of battle that doctrine favors. They are:

Vernichtungsschlacht (1 Mass, 2 Firepower, 4 Movement, 1 Integration, 1 Support, 1 Discipline)
Megafirepower (0 Mass, 4 Firepower, 1 Movement, 3 Integration, 2 Support, 0 Discipline)
Mass Wave (4 Mass, 2 Firepower, 1 Movement, 0 Integration, 0 Support, 3 Discipline)
Grand Battleplan (1 Mass, 1 Firepower, 1 Movement, 2 Integration, 3 Support, 2 Discipline)

And like I said, DON’T PANIC! I’ll make an official post for these and all other changes in the Pre-thread, as usual, in the next few days. This will ALSO ADDRESS how I expect to capture the dimensions previously expressed in Leadership, Equipment, Power Projection, etc., going forward. (Power Projection, for instance, is being temporarily phased out while I reevaluate it). Please contain ALL discussion about the MECHANICS to that thread.

As part of this effort has come a rebalancing aimed to make the militaries more appropriately sized and proportioned. Your previous force composition, choices, etc. have been preserved and converted to the new system as losslessly as I could manage.

Furthermore, please note the new Expertise feature, shown in the ACTIVITY AUDIT above. Social Policies and Expertise are now LIVE as of this update.

The manual is now an obsolete legacy document. Updating it has a prominent position on my to-do list.

edit: ALSO, sorry to Mathalamus. You can try to continue playing as a free Greek rebellion, or move on to some other nation. PM Nuke for more details.

Orders will be due July 22nd.

The Great Zhao is pleased to know he is now fighting his former pupil Diao, for this means neither side will use dirty tricks or harm civilians for the sake of damaging their opponent. He also promises leniency for any who wish to surrender early in the war, for Han cannot withstand the combined strength of arms and economic might of both Zhao and Russia - or frankly, either alone. If any man wishes to go down fighting, however, he understands, and will not punish the families of those that do so.

Zhao mobilizes to 80%.
