Blue Marble Terrain

This may be a dumb question…but does this mod include the Earth map or does that come from somewhere else…if so how do you get the Earth map to load

Hey there,

I really like the Blue Marble Terrain, nice job! BUT I noticed that it affects performance negatively, in terms of game creation, the time it takes to load a saved game, and late-game performance. Does anybody else experience similar effects? And most importantly, can you improve the BMT so that the effect is gone?

Thx! :)

Hi Shigga, the BlueMarble terrain uses high-resolution textures of the same format as the original ones that came with the release of Civ4. Via patches Firaxis later changed the resolution of those textures to lower-res to improve the performance on slower machines. But for optimal graphics on modern systems I want to keep the high-res format of Blue Marble. If you have performance problems, please go into the Civ4 options screen and change texture resolution to low. The next official Civ4 patch will also further improve the performance in this area.

Hm I got a 3200+ with an ATI 9600 128MB and still gotta turn the gfx down... oh well I should stop playingen huge maps

Hmm, with this configuration indeed you should not need reduced graphics. But you should disable buildings in global view if you did not yet, because this is one of the biggest resource hogs. And as I said, the next official patch once more will speed the graphics up.

Huge maps are a drain for most mortal computers.

My GFX card is an old-school typwe, but still powerful, and huge maps are killer for me.

:)

i'll uninstall it because i am getting confused with forest and jungles tills. This mod is a little too dark for me (of course i could adjust the brightness of my screen - i'll probably try that out first).

How much RAM do you have? That's the most relevant number where Civ 4 is concerned. You really want 1.5 GB or 2 GB.

That really is odd, I'm able to play everything on max with a 2500+ and Geforce 6600, 1 gig ram.

I use civ scaling to downscale units and buildings, which by the way, makes the Huge map feel even BIGGER!

I also get rid of clouds and change units to be one with health bars.

That should get ya on a smooth experience of high res, max settings and 4x AA.

I was going to describe how my graphics card, which didn't even have the TnL that's required, was able to run the game with Blue Marble, but then I figured I've posted that story enough already.

Really, the point I would've made with it is that probably the only thing graphics-wise that should really need to be turned down is the resolution. It's easier for the computer to handle the game at max graphics settings at 1024x768 than it is to run it on the lowest graphics settings at 1280x1024--at least, that's how it has been for my computer.

Hi everyone.I got blue marble but i can't get it to work.I run the .exe ,choose install in the wizard ,but all i get is a pink shade in the main menu.Note that i have upgraded to v.1.52 .Am i doing something wrong ? Please advise...:confused:I've had the same problem on another system (P4 3.2 Ghz HT 1024ram intel 915 onboard gpu) , i have it on my new system (amd x2 +4200 1024 ram ati x1600xt ) so i suspect it has nothing to do with my hardware.Any ideas ?

I can't figure out why on my laptop I do not see the waves (whitecaps) and blowing trees when I see them fine on my desktop. I do not even see a parameter to change on Blue Marble for this. Does anyone have an idea why? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks for your time!

If you have such difficulties with BlueMarble, your computer graphics hardware may be a bit weak. BlueMarble uses the high-res texture formats of the original Civ4. When Firaxis realized that many older computers and notebooks are too weak for these formats, they reduced the resolutions of many textures for better compatibility via the patches. So even with weaker graphics hardware it is now possible to play the regular texture set. But the BlueMarble textures will stay to the original high-res formats for best results on modern graphics hardware. Sorry. Apart from trying to reduce the graphics settings in the Civ4 options (especially via "low resolution textures") I can't offer much help. The next official patch will optimize Civ4 even more, perhaps it also may help you.

Hi to all!
Congrats on your beautiful work you have done...
I just download the mode but when i run the game all graphics is pink!
In starting screen, when i play the game etc etc...
Any suggestions???
Thx in advance. :)

ok, I dont know if anyone mentioned this yet, but wanna share this if any of you want to play with Blue Marble in HOTSEAT.. what to do..

If you play some MOD then copy all files from blue marble folder, typicaly:
My Documents\My Games\Civilization 4\CustomAssets\Art

to Civ 4 folder:
Civilization 4\Mods\MODNAME\Assets\Art

and when you load a mod you'll have Blue Marble terrain in single and HOTSEAT games!

ofc, you can even copy files directly to
Civilization 4\Assets\Art
that would make changes to original game, and you would overwrite original terrain so if you do that first backup your Assets\Art.

but I dont like original terrain at all so I'm quite happy since I did this ;)

and to ColdFever :goodjob: for Blue Marble :D

Wicked_1 is correct, this workaround is possible. Fortunately with the next official Civ4 patch such manual interventions won't be necessary anymore, because Firaxis then will allow decent graphic and text mods like Blue Marble or the German community localization in multiplayer. :)

Does this mean that there's a new patch coming up that you know about?I thought v.1.52 was final .
Anyway , i'm still waiting for hints on the pink shade effect i'm getting from BMT and it seems i'm not the only one .Ideas anyone?

As I wrote some paragraphs above, if you have such difficulties with BlueMarble, your computer graphics hardware may be a bit weak. BlueMarble uses the high-res texture formats of the original Civ4. I also am experimenting with a low-res version of BlueMarble for weaker computers, but I have nothing to offer for download yet.
