Blue Marble Terrain

Just curious, are you affiliated with NASA? It's great to see someone with a passion for our Earth and being proactive about it's preservation.:)

No, I am not affiliated the NASA, but I have been following their "Blue Marble" project and other weather/environment documentation projects for years, and it is absolutely frightening to see how fast Earth is becoming uninhabitable through global warming. While most of us Europeans and Americans are happy to live in the last green places and only notice large incidents as stroms and floods like Katrina, even more dramatic are the silent daily catastrophes, especially the increasing speed of spreading deserts. If there ever is a need for a "War on Terror", then we have to fight it against ourselves, as our greed for spending energy is terrorizing Earth more than anything else.

Thankyou, Coldfever, for updating your Blue Marble mod. Ive been using the previous version for a couple of months now and loved it, so I look forwed to this new version. I can't play vanilla civ now without your mod, vanilla is so ugly. Your mod truely makes civ a beutiful experience.

Thankyou.

Just want to add my kudos for your mod.

I used to use modded graphics in Civ3 but found CivIV's graphics and user interface to be just stunning (I really don't get all the whining that goes on here - that UI is brilliant and beautiful). I didn't see any need for improved graphics. But I installed the Blue Marble just for kicks. OMG! I'm stunned all over again. Absolutely fantastic!

I am glad you like it. Many thanks have to go to Firaxis as well, because parts of Blue Marble base on earlier official design concepts: the Tundra and Ice tiles even are almost identical in large parts with the original Firaxis design from the Alpha stage. I decided to keep this great material as a kind of homage and because it looks even better than real tundra/ice satellite pics, as the natural light in those polar regions is not optimal for satellite photography. You still can see the original naturalistic design in the oldest official screenshot:

I wonder how Civ4 would look today if Steve Ogden and his Firaxis art team would have decided to keep and develop the original naturalistic design instead of dropping it for a strategic design that is looking more clear but also more artificial. Instead of wailing about the design change, I decided to follow the original approach of a naturalistic design, and here the BlueMarble NASA material has been tremendously helpful. At that time Firaxis already was using an original NASA BlueMarble image for the fantastic intro screen. So it was a logic decision to carry this wonderful satellite look over to the setup screen and the main map to achieve a consistent look and feel of the game.

why don't the graphics work in multiplayer games ?
all of my friends I play with have them installed too, but this shoudn't be the problem. these are only graphics that are displayed on MY computer.. so why doesn't this work in multiplayer ? :(

I am a bit surprised. I thought with patch V1.61 Firaxis disabled the anticheat multiplayer protection for pure texture mods like BlueMarble. Do you use this patch? If so, perhaps you are using the CivScale tool? Unfortunately this tools still is regarded as a "cheat", because for modifiying the 3D parameters it has to change some XML files. Only the text modification routines of CivScale are safe in this regard, because these parts do not affect the game core files.

can I use this mod with sevomod. If so where do I install it many thanks

You can use Blue Marble with any other mod, Blue Marble becomes the default graphics. Just install Blue Marble (it has an installer so you don't have to choose location) and choose whatever mod you want to play - Blue Marble will be there.

BTW, I play Seveomod too :D

Dear Lord... mate you bloody rule. I'm a bit late to the party and didn't follow the thread at all, but man this is amazing. Keep up the good work!

I too am also fairly late on the bandwagon.. however when I install I see no differences in the game. On the main menu when the game loads there is the Blue Marble logo, but in the game, the terrain doesn't seem any different to me.

I've checked the files and they are in the appropriate places. The only different I have from a standard setup is that I have Civ4 installed on a secondary partion that I use for game installs and other non-necessary function.

Thanks much,

Jeff

Such a setup I use as well without problems, so this can't be the reason. Do you use the latest patch V1.61? And did you start a fresh standard game without the option "No Cheating"?

I have 1.61 installed and I do not have the "Lock Modified Assets" checkbox checked. I have BlueMarble 2.00 installed with HighRes graphics.

NM. It's working, I just had to take screen caps of the same screen with and without the mod installed to truly get a feel for the differences. Thanks.

Never Mind. It is working. I just had to do a comparison between screenshots of the same part of the world with and without the assets loaded.

Thanks.

Do you by any chance still have the screens and could post them if possible?
