A boom, the opposite of rush, means that you'll flourish your economy first before attacking. Often done in MP players that are at the back, they serve as he backbone of every team.

1) build a worker in your first city when founded.

2) beeline at economy techs like agri, etc.

New strategies are always welcome!!!

A boom is a strategy in which you'll flourish first your economy before gearing for war. I usually do that if I'm not the frontliner in the MP games.

Naturally, building a worker first will halt your population for some turns, but after that, think of the benefits! Develop your surroundings, exploit your resources and many more.

And who defends you in between?....

Actually it can work... see this... if that can work, everything can ;)

I've read about that in stories and tales of CIV 4 but the main point here is create a good econmy first before being a warmonger.

This strategy isn't insane dudes......... it's just a bit weird...........

They are mocking you, you know. This strategy isn't anywhere near wierd. It is pretty standard... See for example Snaatys guide to how to win on diety which is done with this general strat.

@Zhuge Liang: There's a lot of sarcasm in this thread, and I'm not sure you're picking up on it. Starting with a worker is a very common strategy - many people will go this route on any map where they don't start with both seafood and fishing. It's a sound start whether you're going for early war on not. Even if you're going for warfare a barracks is a lousy start, and warriors are of dubious use for actual conquest (except Quechas).

One of the rules I've learned about forum discussions is never use sarcasm. Sarcasm only works if you can see the other person's face and hear the tone, something that text cannot confer. Sarcasm leads to flame wars, always. Especially in children/toddler games like Diablo II - the miscommunication and trolling is sick.

Booming works because in team multiplayer mainly because there are no huts and no barbarians. Your borders are completely surrounded by your teammates and human enemies have to walk across their cultural borders, and hence line of sight, first. In FFA, the default mode for single player, or in multiplayer FFA, you WILL be attacked early if your cities are where the aggressor likes. Humans won't attack you even if you are defenseless, if your lands are half-way across the globe in the ancient era. AI's will attack and raze your cities just for pillage gold.

Therefore, the idea of booming really has to be defined. I define booming as "not declaring war on anyone until you get liberalism".

You got it wrong man. There ARE huts and barbarians depending on your settings in MP.

Booming is more than just building a worker and researching agriculture. To me booming also means horizontal and vertical expansion getting by on light military with good diplo. Cottage spam. Get good econ, surpass opponents. Then pick your victory condition.

I think the point Zhuge_Liang was trying to make with the 'worker/agriculture' plan is that in many multiplayer games that would be an unconventional start.

From what I've heard (and in my very limited experience) of MP, anything but 'warrior first and beeline military techs' will usually get you killed real fast. But, on team games, where your team-mates can provide your defences, this allows you to get a strong start in tech, which can then be spread to your buddies.

The question, for us SP types, is what circumstances/strategies could allow a similarly economy-focused start?

An isolated start where barbs aren't a problem (either 'no barbs', the GW, or an easily fog-busted island) is the obvious example - you can completely ignore military builds (except warriors for happiness/fogbusting), techs and resources until much later in the game. Starts with peaceful civs as neighbours, and where you can use religion and diplomacy to keep yourself safe, are another possibility.

How to 'boom' the economy?

My personal favourite is to take CoL from the Oracle, build the Pyramids, and lightbulb Philosophy, allowing a very powerful early SE with Rep/Caste/Pacifism.

Mass settler/worker/cottage spam is a more dependable option.

And a multi-religion hydra is yet another possibility.

The purpose, in each of these cases, is to set up a strong economy much earlier than would be possible if you had to worry about researching/building units for defence or conquest.

Also note, however, that a peaceful start where you concentrate on production and try to build every building/wonder will not be nearly as effective as one in which you build only the necessary buildings/wonders, and concentrate instead on fast research (to get to the necessary improvements/buildings/civics).

Unless your name is obsolete... :mischief:

And i thought this strat was only in rts's, explain it because most ppl never heard of booming and some wont get it( it is also sometimes called blooming, ppl get that name more then booming). And after you boom you can do the next step wich is steamrolling. And so you know, steamrolling is a term from CnC wich is basicly u with an army the size of texes running through they forces like tissue. If u scared to leave your self defensless while you boom you could also turtle(do i have to explain turtling). Also if u wanna know where booming came from, turn on the news when it reports on econimy, booming is an actuall term used in real life.

I generally do this in single player if I start with gold, silver, or gems in my fat cross, or if my first city is in a poor location and I need to get a settler out really fast I do this in conjunction with beelining BW.
