Boring Promotions And Dead End Unit Trees

Yay better and specific promotions.

Plus I hope they fixed the pike (anti horse) upgrade tree. Always was annoying to have pike, lancer, then anti tank gun, and helicopter.
maybe the anti-horse unit tree will have a bonus against HORSE archers, since horse archers are their own unit again.

I hope we get a large variety of units in general with more promos would make domination less boring. the main problem though with domination Victory was unit movment.

It could be interesting to incorporate the ‘eureka’ mechanic into promotions for units.

So, a successful attack or defense in the hills would reduce the XP cost of a promotion in the ‘hills combat’ promotion line, but you would remain free to spend your XPs to proceed down a different promotion line.

I like this idea. Makes your units stronger where they fight.

That would be very nice if they had a bonus against horse archers. But still I wish there was a better upgrade path.

For the domination victory, honestly i wish there were less units on both sides (no carpet of death).

IMO there shouldn't be any obviously overpowered promotions like extra range or multiple attacks except as special abilities for unique units.

I would love to see a "battle honors" system where units can earn special promotions after especially heroic actions...now that you can name your units it would be cool to give them some sort of storied background.

I'm hoping that's a rare occurrence that we're only seeing because this is a demo... Only because it's already breaking the UI and it's not even a late-game unit. (EDIT: or alternatively, I hope they fix the UI to fit more promotions.)
Yeah, I expect that this is a case of an immature UI, and they will probably add a scroll bar or something similar when the number of items exceeds the display space. And of course this is a mock-up and not a real game, but the fact that they gave a unit so many promotions seems significant.

I don't think it necessarily matters the number of promotions, so much as what those promotions do.

For example, you could have 2 promotions adding up to +20% attack bonus, or you could have 4 promotions adding up to the same bonus. The only difference is the frequency of reward and the size of the reward.

Also, a unit might have 7 promotions, but only 2 specialties. For example, 4 promotions in 'barbarian fighting' and 3 promotions in 'hill fighting.' If the unit has been fighting a lot of barbarians in the hills, then that's as it should be. A very specialized unit that is very dangerous when fighting to its strengths.

They could also use the Morrowwind/Oblivion method of leveling up your character based on which skills they used since the last level-up. So if you fight a unit in rough terrain a few times and heal yourself a couple times, then you can select Drill or Medic when you gain your next level.

I used to do that all the time. I'd name a unit Last Jaguars if they were the only ones that survived an invasion. They'd carry that name even after upgrades as a reference to their origin. I might name a unit Berlin Infantry, if they were the unit that sacked the city. I might name the last archer that saved a city the Savior Unit and may put them out to retirement

But a medal system or something like that would be awesome, or the ability to catalog pivotal moments in war.

Boring Promotions And Dead End Unit Trees

I hope they use a "condensed promotions" system in Civ6. My elite units in Civ5 usually had so many promotions and boni (from wonders, etc) as well as unique unit type attributes, that the line with the promotions usually had an overflow and was not fully readable.

For ranged units like archer or crossbow I hope they can upgrade to kind of artillery in Civ6 due to their ballistic experience. The upgrade to Gatling Gun / Machine Gun with -1 Range in Civ5 was rather strange.

I hope they remove the "50 insta heal" promotion.

I exploited the hell out of it by having Saving Promotions on.

Not to mention the AI also abused the heck out of it, which made a lot of their "veteran" units total garbage against units that had some meaningful promotions.

Actually i came to the realization that march is overrated. Offensively it can only heal 10hp per turn.
Cover 1 and 2 actually give a unit a lot more resilience against a wider range of damage.

It can be far better then 10hp per turn.
Blasphemy. March lets you pillaging for health and heal on you own. That's two heals.

I noticed that too, but the AI seems to prioritize instaheal because it's the first promotion available from the list. Same thing for melee naval units, they always go for City raider. I don't think I've ever seen an AI units with logistics or range.

Conquistador's suggested to be a scout-type replacement for Spain. Phrasing of it makes me think that the scout upgrades to a stronger unit later on.

I agree with this assessment.

Actually I think the fact that there are powerful promotions like auto-heal, extra attack or extra range to aim for made the game a lot more fun. Also, it made you extra careful with how you placed your units. The extra-range might have been a bit over-powered, but the rest I found ok. Also with new restrictions on how you need a full movement point to enter a tile and possibly also to make attacks, I think these promotions will be less overpowered.

The barbarian-hunting Pikeman in the E3 video has 7(!) promotions.

Ed mentions in the twitch stream that they were added by the editor. That part was obvious, but he adds that you can't even get 7 promotions in the game.

Judging by the banner in that lower picture, I'd suggest at most a unit could get 6 promotions, if not less.

They mentioned in the live stream that they had cheated and that it wouldn't be possible to have that many.

So, at most you can get 6 promotions? I am not sure I like this limit but I'll wait and see what the promotions are like first.

I just assumed that, when they said you can't get 7 promotions, that it wasn't a prohibition but an unlikelihood.

The quote from Ed during the twitch stream was "We did cheat on the promotions... Our pikeman there has a little 7 on his promotion flag, [insert joke about sean bean], You can't even get 7 promotions in the game. You can with out debug tools, which was obviously how this was done."
