BOTM 08 Pregame Discussion

I would take pottery first, this being epic while building a worker. Then you can farm the wheat and then fill in on cottages while your capitol grows. Then mining - BW, then AH if no bronze shows up. Then myst and you should be ready to make city number 2. As you can see some water already, fog busting wont be that bad.

I am going to have to reinstall if I want to play this becuase I already patched. Darn.

Anyone know what the gauntlet will be for this game? I've taken a break from the gauntlet games, but I find the added challenge makes the games more interesting.

I thought settling on the coast might allow for some research advantage with the clam, but my tests with the testgame save seem to indicate (at least until 1950 BC) that settling 1ne might be better with the challenger limitations.

How about: a goody hut nearby that's guaranteed to spawn angry barbs, no matter who pops it...

Here's my top 5 Nasty Challenger suprises.
#5) Meet your neighbors. Capac, Monty, Izzy.
#4) Your settler and warrior have an argument. Settler wins
#3) Lowther's Goody Hut of Doom
#2) Your starting spot has ice.

Hmm, that's given me an idea for challenger when we hit deity: Your starting position is totally surrounded by goody huts. Given the high chance of them spawning angry barbs on deity, you basically won't be able to move until you've researched hunting and built a scout  (Only trouble is, when you do finally build a scout, you'd get so many gifts that it'll be more like adventurer...)

Such a shame the game doesn't allow goody 'huts' (rigs?) on coast tiles. Byebye defenceless workboat... ;)

Not good. You could just pop them with a settler, which can't pop barbs.

In the scenario I proposed, if only barbs are allowable, then popping with a settler would give you nothing (I assume, having never done it), but the player would have sacrificed a turn or two to do that.

By the way, you can put goody huts on coastal tiles and galleys and wbs can pop them for free techs or anything else. (So if you want to be evil, put goody huts on ocean tiles... )

But if barbs spawn on coastal tiles, they can't move or attack. On the other hand they do prevent wbs from moving to that tile. This would force the player to build a galley to remove the barbs, which they do at bad odds, but always win with no damage.... Plus, if the barbs spawn within the city's fat cross, they have no impact on using the tile's yield. But that leads to another possible challenger equalizer:

Put barbs on coastal resource tiles. The city can still use the tile, but the player can't put nets on the tile till after researching Sailing and building a galley...

 OMG, challenger looks worse than Deity. :aargh:

(Please don't anyone put LC in charge of XOTM! :p)

I'm still deliberating whether to go for a slightshot or not. With the lack of commerce seen it could be hard to get a lot of benefit from it.

Any thoughts about wonders?

Stonehenge looks attractive since DeGaulle's monuments also provide +1:), and in test games I can get it in 52 turns. Or I can can it in 62 turns and have 2 cities. Anything under 70 turns should get you it. If you don't mind getting a lot of GProphets. But I've also discovered that what you aren't doing while you build SH can really come back to bite you.

Pyramids is quite do-able instead, (turn 84 or so) and then you'll get a GE just in time to rush the GLib as well. (And another for Parthenon later?) I think if we are isolated or have nice neighbors that would work out pretty well.

If its one big landmass, I think early land-grab is more important than wonders, though. Putting pottery early in the tech queue is essential to keep a reasonable economy going with this start, however. Unless we find gems, gold, silver etc nearby. In short, stay flexible early on, and you'll probably do better than me.

I started to play a bit more the BTS game (thanks again for them !) but with vacations, I will not have time to do the next one (and I guess I am not the only one). Could it be possible to get a delay for the end of this BTS game like end of august ?

@ Admins: I know you are not supposed to post here after starting the game, but I thought it was appropriate in this circumstance. If not, please remove!

Moderator Action: It is never appropriate to post in a pregame or saves available thread after you have started the game.
All you have to do is PM an admin - preferably the game designer, who posted this thread.

Gauntlet - or is it too late?

I propose Domination for this game. If two or more people support the proposal, we'll have a run, otherwise might skip this month.

Domination victory sounds good for the gauntlet to me, but I had some problems with my computer this time. They might not accept my game.

Moderator Action: The rules are that no one posts in the pre-game or saves available threads once they have started the game.

Deleted again! AlanH

Jeffa and hhhawk are going to addend the Gauntlet, so Domination it is.
