BOTM 17 First Spoiler

Reading Requirements

Stop! If you are participating in BOTM 17, then you MUST NOT read this thread unless EITHER
  • You have reached at least 500 AD in your game, OR
  • You have submitted your entry

Posting Restrictions

  • Please do not disclose information gained post 500 AD.
  • Please do not name civilizations that requires caravels to contact.
  • Please do not reveal territory that requires caravels to reach.

So how did you cope with the difficult decision of where to settle and how quickly to expand?

Izzy begain by researching Med\Poly because she's the religious type. She even made me sacrifice a few hammer and food tiles to work $g tiles to ensure founding these two religions (prob not necessary).

I think that we were producing Workboat\Workboat\Monument to start in Seville\Madrid\Barcelona.

Next, since she detests idle workers, so we researched Mining\Wheel so that they would have something to do as they were born.

Civ IV “Shapshot Spoiler” Notes:

1. Stats for 1000BC are in the first {###}, then 0AD, then, in the second spoiler, [###] for 1000AD.
2. Y = means yes I have that resource & hooked up
3. Food, Production, Commerce come right off F9 stats, with the science slider set to the closest point to yield 0 gpt.
4. The sustainable beakers per turn is figured the same way.
5. Culture per turn is also figured that way, since I didn’t yet have Liberalism (for FS) and had not turned up my culture slider.
6.. The first number in ### cottages used/built is how many I was working at the given date, and the second is how many my workers had built (there is no distinction between cottages, hamlets, villages or towns.)
7. The techs listed are the last ones in the line that I have; i.e., if I list Fishing at 1oooBC and 0AD, that means that I had not acquired Sailing yet in that line.

Adama

First 3CC game played, made some initial mistakes (went for Hinduism, but produced workers, which arrived with nothing to do).
Quickly met Mali and Korea, initially planned for a religious victory, and wanted to convert my neighbours.

However, I soon saw Mali take my stone (I culturally expanded Barcelona much too late, as all the religions I founded went to Seville). Built stonehenge in Barcelona, but that didn't change anything to the situtation, thus I decided I needed to take out Mali. Started to mass produce chariots, then axemen ; decimated Mali despite their UU, until I arrived on their capital : 12 axemen + 2 chariots, with city raid promotion for all axemen (sometimes city raider II / III) got massively destroyed by 4 Mali UU. Settled for peace to rebuild an army, but the point of my initial war was not achieved.

Soon enough, I took a strong tech lead, and was coming with catapults + macemen on hopeless Mali. Destroyed the capital and some other cities, then waited for me to get Feodalism and vassalized him.

At that point, I thought I might go for Cultural victory since I realized we were only 3 on the continent, but with little experience on this victory type, spammed wonders, and came to think that this victory condition is boring. Decided instead to go for conquest, as I generally trigger domination before and thought that the 3CC would be fun for that victory.

The rest is post 500AD. Aiming for the rage award ? (if it's attributed again)

Contender, goal of fastest space race (thought everyone would be going culture here). Decided to ignore early religions for worker techs, was able to pick up Judaism on the cheap later around when it could help for extra happiness.

I liked the switcheroo with the marble/stone/Mansa. I debated taking it by force but decided to pass; I may eventually get it by culture, hard to say.

Specialized Barcleona as a hammer city, although it could in time work lots of flatland cottages. Was parked on Pyramids for quite a while, then same with HG, Parthenon.... Has just finished Taj. Madrid is the GP farm with standard GL/NE, also build GLighthouse, Artemis, and Maus because I was short on other things to build. Seville is the cottage super-science city; will have Oxford in a couple turns. Have academies in Madrid/Seville and have been settling other GS's in Seville. Originally I intended to move the Palace to Seville but it had lowish hammers, I would have spots to build now but have already gone free speech.

Through some ignoring, getting Sury to Friendly, and gifting of tech to Mansa until he researched something I didn't have, I managed Alphabet, Monarchy, IW, Construction in trade. Can get Theology (weighing whether AP is worth it for hammers) and Music now, waiting on Currency to show up. My own research just pulled in Lib->Demo and am heading Optics/Astro to go find me overseas trade.

My 1st xOTM ever, so contender’s save.
After several starts on a test map I decided to prioritize culture and research early in game.

That was nasty surprise to find Mansa Musa settling capital next to stone and I was thinking to change my strategy and do some kind of early rush on him, but decide not to. Main reason was: I didn’t want to cripple one of AI and make other AIs on continent (sure there had to be more neighbours) stronger. I hope, some of you guys have a lot of fun with early warring and I can’t wait to read your reports here.

Anyway, back to my game with fully peaceful strategy.
Some MM allow me to tech: Poly (turn 10), Mining (turn 15, start building gem mine same turn), Masonry (21), Wheel (26), Monotheism (32), Pottery, Hunting, AH, Priesthood, Agriculture, Writing. CS (Oracle, 1120BC), Education (175BC), PP (275AD), Astronomy (450AD) was some major techs after.

I did found all religions except Buddhism, converted as needed for diplomacy or culture bonuses, build 3 holy shrines (+31:gold:pt at 500AD). Was pretty unlucky with GPs: 3 GP, 2 GM, 1 GE, 1 GA (Music) and 2 GS - both pretty late.

After produced some workers and WBs, city’s builds few missionaries, some infrastructure and a lot of wonders: SH (2480BC), GW (2320BC), ToA (1560BC), Oracle, Pyramids (1000bc; pretty late, but I had no stone), GLib (625BC), Parthenon (525BC), GLh (450BC), HG, AP, UoS, MoM, Sistine (475AD). NE (550BC) and Oxford (75AD) was built in Madrid.
Stone tile has 46% Spain cultural influence at 500AD and after it will flip I plan to build some more WW.

Diplomacy was pretty easy and I had no need in any military, trained only one axeman so far (just waste of 35 hammers). Sury is friendly to me and 2nd in score, so PA is an option for future.

As for VC at this point, I can choose whatever I like.
  • Culture is obvious and easy choice.
  • AP diplo is another option but I didn’t meet all of AIs yet so could be tricky.
  • PA with Sury and do some sort of late game warring could be fun too.
Anyway, you can’t lose the game at this point.

Here some SS at 500 AD.

Thanks to DynamicSpirit for a great map! And all guys here for such a nice and informative forum!

initial thought is to delay workers since I am going for poly & have no worker techs, worked out well w/ workers coming out as AH was researched, though could have used a worker a few turns earlier to farm barcelona; plan domination/conquest through vassals & maybe PA

early builds research:

Madrid (cottage city) - wb, wb (explore), worker, worker, barracks, chariot, chariot, granary, monument, library, hindu temple
Barcelona (hammer city) - monument, worker, worker, barracks, chariot, chariot, chariot, granary, axe, axe,
Seville (specialist / GP city) - monument, wb, (2 turns at ToA to allow for growth to size 2, combined w/ fishing boat & exp trait gets worker out faster ) worker, worker, ToA, GW
res - poly - ag - AH - mining - masonry - wheel - hunting - bw (slavery) - pottery - writing - mono (org rel), math
-meet Mansa Musa, realize he needs to go real soon, unfortunately, would have enjoyed having him to trade with
-meet Suryvarman
-3520 BC found hinduism in Seville
-Hinduism self spreads to Madrid
-1560 BC found Judaism in Barcelona
-Judaism self spreads to Timbuktu, Mansa converts

later events:

-spread judaism & hinduism to all 3 of my cities, used Madrid as a second unit building city, but give priority to science & happiness / health
-kept building units in anticipation of removing Mansa
-Seville (specialist / GP city) - built temples and ran priest specialists, then Oracle
-1200 BC GM born (&#%?@!) instead of GP, settled in Seville, turn res to 100%
-950 BC found confucianism in Seville, build Oracle claim cs (beauracracy); survaryman converts to hinduism (&#%?@!)
-spread hinduism to mansa, he converts, i convert to hinduism
-limited trades with AI, want to keep them behind in tech

War of Malinese Removal 725 BC - 375 AD: not much to say; with skirmishers, it was difficult & cost a lot of units, but I really wanted that stone, began with flanking war chariots & axes, but used cats/maces to finish them off. thought about vassalizing them, but decided against it; would have had them beat several turns earlier, but after sending in my cats against one city my other units were fortified & forgot to go back and destroy the city after other unit's moves (was fighting on two fronts), the next turn 2 more skirmishers were moved into the city & had to wait to build & move in reinforcements, a costly mistake. In hindsight, I should have just waited for cats before I dowed.

build mostly wonders in Seville: Hanging Gardens, Notre Dame

750 BC GP - builds Hindu shrine in Seville
450 BC GG - settled in Barcelona
375 BC GP - builds Confucian shrine in Seville
25 AD - Hanging Gardens in Seville
50 AD GS - builds academy in Madrid
375 AD Notre Dame in Seville
450 AD meet someone overseas
475 AD found christianity in Seville
500 AD meet someone else overseas

Plan here is to tech straight to Conquistadors; building up a lot of 10 exp Trebs (citadel, barracks, settled GG in Barcelona) in the meantime

Am going to try to foud all religions (except buddhism which I did not try for at the beginning) to make it easier to spread hinduism & confuciansim for shrines, might in time build a third shrine.

-Madrid will be super science city, w/ full cottages except resource tiles; balance also between boats, missionaries, & units;
-Barcelona to build nothing but units & unit buildings (stable, barracks, citadel, heroic epic, etc.), with the exception of the minimum happiness / health buildings; irrigated fp, workshopped almost everything else (thought about watermills, but more shields from workshops [running caste system], and mined hills, of course
-Seville to build wonders, run specialists, & be gold city w/ shrines & merchants; mostly irrigated, a couple workshops for use when needed, 4 grass forests left untouched to be preserved in the future for National Park; also build missionaries and the occasional boat

My 1st xOTM ever, so contender’s save.

Wow. I must say this was a pretty good start for first xOTM; and thanks for posting.:p

My approach - similar to Teddy KGB. Quick cultural start. Spread religion. Try for fastest cultural vic.

@DS: Although your sarcasm was quite funny about our early settling decisions; I did have any early game move that I thought worked out quite well. Decided to build Stonehenge immediately in Seville (a worker was useless - no tech, and a WB was useless until culture spread.) Initially was going to build a monument there but hey: why sell yourself short.

Founded hinduism, before I had a chance to spread it like wildfire, I had popped CoL from Oracle and got a free missionary so instead spread confusionism. I must say I was happily surprised at how easy it is to convert someone to your religion, to reap the peace benefits, when they have no religion on the continent. I think I had sent in only 4 missionaries and they were mine for the game. After some bad luck lately in other games, I decided to not weaken my military too much in cultural games - probably cost me some turns building axemen for safety. Better safe than sorry.

I would like to think at this rate there is no possibility of defeat, but we will find out in next spoiler. Thanks DS and Leif E for the 3CC, it provides a new approach and challenge to an otherwise relatively easy difficulty level. I also liked the Challenger and Adventurer Saves being one difficulty level up or down, and the threads out immediately. Nice work. :goodjob:

At 500AD: Madrid is size 12, Barcelona and Madrid are size 11. All are growing.
Research Slider is on 70% with +7 gpt producing 308 beakers per turn.
Civics: Rep/Bureuacracy/Caste/Pacifism

Research Order: Agri, Mining, BW, Masonry, AH, Writing, Wheel, Hunt, Poly, Priest, Pottery, CoL, Math, (Oracle CS), Aesthetics, Lit, Paper, Ed, MC, Med, Philo, Machinery, Alpha, (trade for Sailing, Archery, IW, Mono), Compass, Optics, Construction, Engineering

Timetable:

2280 BC Stonehenge
2040 BC Great Wall
1240 BC 1st GP : GSpy settled in Madrid
1200BC Confucianism founded in Seville
950 BC Oracle
775BC Mids
625BC 2nd GP: GP built Kong Miao (could have settled, but I needed the cash)
425 BC Great Library
350 BC Parthenon
275 BC Nat. Epic
250 BC 3rd GP: GS bulbed Education
100 BC 4th GP: GP settled in Barcelona (should have put him in Madrid )
1 AD 3 size 11 cities running total 8 sci (6 + 2 fr GLib) producing 135 bpt w/ 70% sci
25 AD Daoism founded in Seville
50 AD 5th GP: Another GP to build Dai Miao (probably should have settled it)
300 AD Oxford in Madrid
375 AD Angkor Wat
400 AD 6th GP: Finally a second GS! Builds Academy in Madrid.
425 AD Hindism finally spreads into Spain so I can convert and keep Mansa and Sury happy

City build orders:

Madrid: WB, W, W, GW, Lib, WB (to edxplore), W, Oracle, CTem, Gran, Aqueduct, GLib, NE, Barracks, Univ, Oxford, DTem, Forge, Light, Colossus (in 5 turns)

Barcelona: W, Stone, Mids, Gran, Parth, CTem, Lib, Forge, Univ, Aqueduct

Seville: Monument, WB, W, Barracks, W, W, W, W, W, WB (to explore), 3Axes, 3Chariots, 3Spears, Granary, CTem, Court, 3Axes, Lib, Univ, Forge, Angkor Wat, Caravel, Caravel

I seem to be way ahead in tech at the moment, so I will try to use Liberalism to grab Biology to get six free specialists in Madrid. I will grab something earlier (Chem, SciMeth) if unmet civs are further along than I expect. After that I will probably gift Mansa a whole bunch of techs so he can help me tech faster. To the Skies!!!

Contender (wish now I had played the challenger level)

Culture victory the aim, but decided against going for an early religion as I wasn't convinced I would get it and didn't want to maybe get stuck next to hostile neighbours and they have founded the other early religion and spread it, forcing me to join them or choose my own religion and risk their wrath.

Early research was mining/agri/animal husbandry/hunting/bronze working/wheel

Because of all the early worker techs I couldn't really build much in my cities, so produced a lot of workers for me, 2-3 per city I think which helped in the long run, also helped to chop wonders in madrid (too little forest around the other 2 cities).

Met Mansa, immediately decided against an early rush due to his UU (previous GOTM a few months ago we started next to babylon I forgot about their UU - the bowmen, and tried to axe rush a hilltop city... with culture defense. One dead pile of axes later and 2 hardly scratched bowmen I gave up too embarrassed to continue).

2600BC Stonehenge - Madrid
1680BC Great wall - Madrid, Monotheism founded in Seville
1200BC Oracle - Madrid, Got Theology from oracle (I think), Christianity in Barcelona, same turn a great prophet, send missionary towards Sury with a chariot escort intending to convert him to Christianity, then switch myself so we can gang up on mansa who's hindi. Before I get there Judaism spreads to sury and he converts, so I do likewise and send missionary back.

1120BC Temple of artemis - Seville (went for GL but lost iirc)
925BC Confucianism founded in Seville.
675BC Hagia Sophia - Madrid
500BC Pyramids - Barcelona (went for HG here as well later but lost)
375BC Temple of solomon, same turn another great prophet, so in next few turns....
300BC Church of nativity.
About this time I get round to researching iron working and archery, and start to build a few more units to improve my rather poor defenses..

25AD Taoism in Seville (3rd in Seville, was disappointed at the time, wanted to found a religion in madrid for more even culture..)

150AD Research construction then 175AD Alphabet :crazyeye: very late but I was going a bit wonder mad..

275AD Great merchant in seville- get currency
350AD Civil Service, change to bureaucracy

Build more units (Mansa's numerous swordsmen near my borders are worrying me..) and improve land until 500AD...

My target is also a cultural win in this game:

Researched to priesthood getting Budhism (3720BC) on route to start the Oracle build, then Writing/COL (Confusianism 1680BC) so that the completed Oracle gave me Philosophy (Taoism 1480BC). - Switch to Pacifism/Caste System to run as many GA's as possible.

I then went for Theocracy (Christianity 125AD) and then on the Music route to allow me the cathedrals needed.

In the mean time Judaism was spread to me by Mansu so at 500AD I had 5 religions and was busy building missionaries and cultural buildings.

I also switched to Mansu's religion to keep him happy.

Only having 3 cities has given me a big challenge in this game. (I want to build units and go on a rampage to increase my world area and weaken my neighbours...but I also want to build the culture buildings needed for cultural win....I cant do both.)

I played the contender (at lightning speed) although I'm certain challenger is "better" (= not easier but giving a faster and higher scoring win). But I never play anything else than contender and felt it would be kind of cheating to do it this time.
The game is over for me (see final spoiler for the last part).

Goals : fast win (real time !) = either cultural or religious if I manage to find all the neighbours.
So I oracled theology (in 1480BC) and built the AP (in 650BC for buddhism, no particular reason, but I had spread buddhism to all my cities, so I sticked with this religion).
I had sent a missionary to mansa, and another was trying to find further neighbours but had no luck (I mean he didn't find one, he finally got killed by barbs but that's only normal).
So I turned to cultural.

Situation in 500 AD :
3 cities (duh) 17/15 and 18 pop points.
I'm 5 turns away from liberalism (running 90% science and 10% culture for happiness. Certainly a mistake).
- Madrid (size 17) is finishing a university, producing 226 cpt, and has stonehenge, the great library, hanging gardens, temple of artemis, Hagia Sophia, 3 religions and a cathedral for 2 of those.
- Seville (size 18) is building a confucian academy, producing 250 cpt, and has the church of nativity, the mahabodi, the oracle and the AP, 5 religions and the cathedral for 3 of them.
- barcelona (size 15) is building the globe theater, producing 92 cpt, and has the parthenon, statue of zeus, sistin chapel, national epic, 6 religions and no cathedral yet.

Big mistake : barcelona is fully cottaged and I didn't build the farms it would need to be a good GP farm.

Diplomacy : I'm buddhist like survyavarman, and he is super friendly. Mansa is jew (he founded judaism) and is cautious.
Millitary : 4 archers, 2 chariots, 1 warrior.

Having just played 90% of an OCC and been disappointed that a cultural victory was not available to my very legendary city, 3CC offered a suitable replacement.

Playing Noble
With that in mind, the targets have been religion & Wonders.

Went for buddism on the offset, successfully, and Seville started on Stonehenge.
Spread buddism as widely as possible, have even had Suryvarman and Mansa convert for a while.

Open borders all round and pretty good relations. It has been fun keeping a balance of culture in each city. Running at 100% nearly all the way so far, and have made plenty of cash for upgrades to Longbow etc. Good number of defenders in each city and fortified in key points / resources, offereing sufficient deterent against agression.

Why haven't I tried this before.

So I oracled theology (in 1480BC) and built the AP (in 650BC for buddhism, no particular reason, but I had spread buddhism to all my cities, so I sticked with this religion).

So I turned to cultural.

That's what I did, but I only used 3 religions this time; Christianity, Tao, and Conf. My biggest mistake was not building a monument in Barcelona first. It allowed Mansa to take a few tiles by culture. No matter, by the end his cap was completely surrounded by my culture.

Been fairly aggressive towards Mansa up to 500 AD, razing Timbuktu and 4 other cities. Sury is friendly towards Isabella, but she's not sure whether she'll go to bed with him or not. Depends on the situation on the other continent(s).

Seville: Commerce city, all tiles cottaged except hills/resources.
Madrid: Mixed/wonder city, farms/cottages.
Barcelona: Production/HE city, floodplains farmed, workshops on grassland tiles.

Space race or conquest (hopefully)

Goal: Fast Conquest and Medal
Save: Contender (because no one is going to be impressed with a Prince win anyway)

After a couple practice games, I decided that I wanted to grab Feudalism with Oracle so I could start vassalizing AI quickly, so I could direct their research, take their resources, and perhaps get them to capture some cities.

As planned, I Oracled Feudalism in 1720BC. In 1680BC, Mansa begged me to make him my vassal, so I gladly obliged. I'd much rather keep Mansa healthy and teching what I told him to. I also got all the tiles in Seville's BFC that had been under pressure from Timbuktu.

From there, I teched toward Construction to attack Sury's hill cities. After razing three of his cities (out of 5), Sury became my vassal in 725BC.

From there, I needed to get to Astro ASAP. I had deliberately avoided Civil Service and Meditation so that my GSs could bulb Optics and Astro. I built GLib in 900BC and National Epic soon after, both in Barcelona. My first GS born in Seville built an academy in Madrid, and the remaining three I needed would come from Barcelona. I bulbed Optics in 475BC and upgraded a trireme to my first caravel. I bulbed Astro in 400BC and started building galleons for the overseas wars.

I'll stop there since I was about to meet the first overseas AI at this point.

Well, since the creators like posting writeups, I thought I'd try to write more then normal (which is very little !) I started taking notes, but it petered out quite early.

So, turn 0: Where are we...

No trade routes, so we're down to 60%.

I think Madrid will be a GP farm, and later get the National Park and HE in there. Loads of great people later on. Maybe artists to go for cultural ?

Barcelona looks like a good production city. To start with, it can support 7 mines without farming the flood plains.

Which puts Seville as the cottage city, even though it doesn't have the Gems.

So, early commerce will be gems, but we want cottages too.

Turn 1:
So, Mansa has a city right next to the stone. Not sure if we can get that back, even putting the Oracle in there.

Turn 14:
Looks like it's his capitol. We should try to blitz it really

Turn 62: 1520BC.
By now I've got the copper hooked up, and marble. The oracle might be in in 9,but I'm wondering about taking 14, to get monarchy in to take Vasalage.
Madrid and Sevill are hooked up by road.
I've got 5 workers, no other units built yet. As soon as Mids are finished, I'll start cranking out axes & spears.

Turn 74: 1040BC. Got the oracle and took vassalage from it.
Turn 75: 1000BC. Got pyramids. :)

At this point I stopped taking detailed notes and my play probably went down hill a bit.

I think my main problem was the lack of focus. I kept swapping between military, relegious and cultural. Well, at least is should stop me from being invaded.

The tech order was
Mining, Masonry (for the great wall) Bronzeworking to get to slavery quickly and to get the gems mind for more research. Agriculture, hunting, the wheel, animal husbandry. Then the run for the oracle, Meditation (2040) Priesthood, writing, pottery, Monarchy and take Feudalism from the oracle on the same turn (1040BC). Maths 725BC, CoL 600BC (taking Confucianism). IW in 525BC, then Aesthetics and Literature (400bc for the GLib). Theology in 225BC from a Gprofit. Then Music, drama, alphabet & Archery (trade in 25AD) Sailing, Currency, Metal Casting. Philosophy (got Taoism) in 375AD.

I also got the GW in 2200BC, the in Pyramids 1040. I adopted Vassalage (better defense) and representation (happiness) and started cranking out longbows from Seville (much later than i should have done, didn't get archery until 25AD)
Other wonders were Temple of Artemis, Hanging Gardens (100BC) Great Library (75AD) Parthenon 250AD,

I skipped the early religions, but Hinduism spread to me organically.

Around 350AD I bribed Suryavrman into declaring on Mansa Musa. The idea was I would get Mansa's capitol from that after joining in to get the stone.

At this point I think I'm aiming for a relegious victory. I've founded 3 of the 4 alter religions, and if I switch to the right religion when I finish the AP, then I might get an easy win there, assuming I can spread it to everyone else. I guess cultural will be a back up if that doesn't work since I've been wonder spamming.

I decided to play my first BOTM (or GOTM) ever...the past few months were pretty high for me (I'd say Emperor is my limit), though Noble itself is a bit easy. Thus, I went with the Challenger class save.

This was also my first time doing a 3CC, so thanks to the GOTM staff for this interesting concept. :)

----------

It was hard to know what to build initially: there were a lot of unimproved tiles, but also many undiscovered worker techs. I started off with a combination of workers, work boats, and monuments to expand my borders (especially once I met Mansa Musa).

Seeing as we had horses much more close by than copper, I decided to go with a chariot rush. The level was Prince, so it was semi-feasible. I felt that there was nothing else worth building (more workers? Not necessary... more wonders? Not enough benefit...), so I mass produced chariots.

When I declared war on Mali in 1760 BC, they had three cities, with their first one guarded by one or two skirmishers. I built up a force of maybe 10 chariots with a few spare units:

That led to this (Malinese city razed):

civ4screenshot0001.jpg

Pushing on, I was able to overwhelm Mali with sheer numbers just as I hooked up copper. Mali defeated in 1320 BC (turn 67 -- an 11 turn war).

With the Khmer, I was able to build Axemen and Horse Archers, two things that proved vital to the much larger civilization. Horse Archers, promoted to Flanking II, really helped weaken defenses in the absence of catapults. Declaration of war vs. Khmer in 625 BC:

My first great general was used to make a supermedic chariot, intended to keep my mobile forces healthy while I rushed to defeat Suryavarman II.

By turn 111, 100 BC, Khmer was no more. I had the island to myself.

Big picture of 100 BC...only barbarians remain (free XP):

civ4screenshot0011i.jpg

After founding Confucianism to help alleviate happiness problems, I got a GP and used him to build the shrine, hopefully to benefit me in the future.

civ4screenshot0015e.jpg

Madrid became a production-oriented city, building the Hanging Gardens in 4 turns!

Other miscellaneous thoughts on the game and points for discussion:
  • Rushing Mansa Musa early really helped. I knew that if I allowed time to go by, he would get too large and start to settle in places that were unfavorable.
  • Like others, I had a lot of excess workers as a result of war capturing and overproduction at home. Essentially every tile in my territory is roaded and improved...
  • Monarchy and HR really helped solve my happiness problems, especially considering the cities have so much food.
  • After the wars, when my science was down around 30%, I was able to rebuild the economy nicely and make a beeline to Optics.
  • What victory condition to go for? Cultural is out of the question, as is Domination. Space Race can be my backup to Conquest, I guess.

Post one too long... :)

Goal: Domination victory.

I'll describe my beginning because it was a bit different and perhaps interesing. Then I'll describe where I'm at at 475AD and some hilarious blunders I made.

Opening
I've always toyed with the idea of cottage spamming from the get-go. Here was my chance. The only techs I needed were mining-the wheel-pottery. Madrid and Seville had enough food with the fish, Barcelona would grow plenty fast working fp cottages, but I wanted the gems mined asap to speed my research. Plus I wanted plenty of mines for libraries and wonders.

The fastest way to get the gems was to build a worker in Seville in 10 turns and grow Madrid while fast-building a wb. Barcelona also built a worker for cottages. Seville then built a monument, while Madrid built the Seville wb. It was a really fast start. I had Alphabet by 2120 BC and got my other worker techs. By then I also had a handful of cottages working in all three cities.

Blunders
1. I forgot to build academies. First time I've ever made this mistake. Oh well.
2. I mined the Madrid pigs and then forgot to pasture them when I got AH, all the time angonizing over how slowly Madrid was growing...:crazyeye:
3. I researched Military Science (Trad?) so I coulld get a Defensive Pact with my future PA-partner, but I decided not to use it, common war is just easier.

* I built a total of 5 workers and haven't DoWed anyone yet.
* Research 600bpt, 100% throughout
* 8 towns, 13 villages, 10 hamlets
* tons of wonders
* met all AIs, mapped the entire world, and circumnavigated
* chosen my future PA partner

Plan
Madrid has HE and is my GP Farm. I am a few turns from completing Taj Mahal. Then I will stay in a golden age till the end of the game. I should have about 1000bpt till SciMeth, then about 900bpt. I'll get a PA aound T180. Then if I have time I'll sludge through the tedious process of having him taking over the required land for domination, if possible.
