BOTM 25 Pregame Discussion

(edit: before galleys anyway -- is the tile 2SW-1S a plains hill?).

I think so... I like in place actually... don't loose those furs, three hills, possibly two more resources, and I would hate to loose a fish hiding in the western fog ( :band: "you may say I am a dreamer..."). Then I will have the incredible advantage to not loose what is left of my mind thinking at what improvement I will put on that floodplain :mischief:

Hopefully i can finish this one... (I tryed to be in the spirit for wotm26 -motivated by the awesome pic in the topic-, drinking a beer a turn, but for some reasons, it didn't work well :dunno:)

@Indiansmoke: you really plan on settling on turn 3?

Ras

Very interesting civ choice. Last BOTM had a late game amphibious UU. This one has a mid game amphibious UU. Hummmm... What are you trying to say?

Yes it can. May be it's a good choice because on Epic speed 1 turn isn't so critical.
Thanks. That really helps my early planning. I guess that means:

Turn 1
- Scout 1NW-1NE.
- Settler 1SW... if nothing interesting, follow up with 1E.

Turn 2
- Scout 1SE or 1NW-1NX?
- Settler... settles 1S of the starting position, or may move an extra turn.

Build order City1: workboat - worker/workboat - chop settler - lighthouse - library - great lighthouse?
Build order City2: warrior - warrior - workboat/worker - axemen
Tech order: Mining - Bronze Working - Hunting - Sailing - Wheel - Pottery - Writing - Alphabet or Metal Casting?

Yes I plan on settling on the plains hill. The extra hammer from the city tile will easily make up for the lost turns.

Maybe this is why I suck, but settling a coastal PH seems odd to me especially on an unidentified style of archipelago map. Losing the 2hpt on a food rich area with lots of chop power nearby makes me pass. It won't take too long to get the net hammers caught up plus that PH will come in very handy building the wonders. There's 30 hammers trapped in the trees there anyways so it's only the range between t30 and when size 5 or 6 is reached that there is any real benefit. After that you are losing out. Right?

I am not an expert on single player by any means, but I think the snowball effect of getting that hammer from the start is more important than having the extra hammers from the mine later on.

For example:

Assumming you go work boat first...

By settling on the plains hill you can work the plains forest for a tottal of 1 food & 4 hammers per turn. Thus getting the workboat in 12 turns and gaining 12 food towards size 2 in these 12 turns.

If you compare that to settling on south fur for example and working the plains hill to get the workboat...you are -12 food in the first 12 turns already.

This means that after improving clam you will grow size 2, 3 turns later....which means that you will get worker 3 turns later, which means that you will get fur improved 3 turns later and so on.

Also in this situation you will have 6 hapiness after wheel. At size 6 lets say you will be working the 2 furs the 2 clam and 2 hills...the third hill will come in play much later after monarchy, way after monarchy since you will be working cottages etc..

So unless you plan to neglect furs and work 2 clams and 3 hills from early to make wonders...then the mine will take a veeeeery long time to catch up to the extra hammer..if it ever does.

Without doing any numbers, the advantage of gaining one extra hammer from the begining of the game due to settling on a PH on a water map with food will pale very quickly when you want to build things. I would keep that for 4 hammer mine first and with a forge + OR + Buro it will become a 8 hammer tile when building infratructure and 7 hammer for building units. Now if this was a land map and there were no excess food, then by all means settling on top will be the way to go.

Definitely a solid plan, but there's a no way of knowing the pelego type which is my concern with passing on it. Could be snaky or just dotted islands. These pelego maps can tend to be quite hammer poor. There are 3 reasonable sites to settle this time and will produce lots of different things. I just hate passing the hill up for help with bezerks, and if there weren't trees on it it's a much easier decision. I guess this is something that can be spreadsheeted if I wasn't so lazy.

And of course VC may play a role here.

Before you read too much into that apparent similarity, you might consider that the last BOTM was devised by Niklas, not me, and that if you read the pregame discussions, you may note that I was intending to play that game, and he is intending to play this one. There could be a subtle clue there to indicate that I had no input or knowledge about his choice of game, nor he in this one... ;)

Just started this 5 minutes ago, and my machine crashed.
I moved the settler and the scout, founded a city and alt-tabbed to update my spreadsheet-> crash.

What should I do now??????

I will settle in place and head to writing asap via Meditation. Build a WB, Worker, WB and a warrior or 2 for fog busting and may be a settler :). Will run 2 Scientist ASAP to get an Academy built. Target to get Oracle for MC and build the GLH and Colosus. So I will need Math for the chopping bonus. What else can I say? oh yeah it is high time I meet Mr Sid of susi fame. Got introduced to him in the last BOTM and I think I like him. I think I will build the Mois Statue early for a change.

Goal: Get a score greater than 100,000 since I have yet to brake it. Everything else does not matter. Great plan ha? :D

Hummmm do I even need a worker that early for my current plan?.....hummm......I think yes to work the two 5C,2F and 1H tiles. So Better put the wheel in there somewhere early.

Crash on turn 0 is somewhat awkward. As Gosha190 says, PM me, and DO NOT continue the game until we've talked about it.

I think I will be able to use my friend's kids computer for this game during Christmas visit. So I get to play. Hee Haw.

My plan is to settle on the spot and see if I can ge a religion. This is not my style but some thing different. As many others, I am hoping for a few Wonder boosted economy and go for a high science game untill 0AD. Then will deceide what VC to go after. Good luck everyone.

azzaman is correct, it is meaningless for GOTM.

Once you begin to play, you should not post in the pre-game thread. Please PM the staff member who designed the game in future. :thanx:
