Box Art Revealed

I like it, honestly. I kinda see it that way: The upper part of the box is dedicated to buildings/wonders and science (I really like that spaceship in the clouds and stars :)) and the lower part is more about war and production. Add to that the CiV logo with that pretty cool V in the background and it makes a great box art, if you ask me.

Cluttered for the ADD generation.
As someone with ADD, I can tell you that clutter is usually the product of our efforts, not something that attracts our interest. Clutter is a disincentive; it is overwhleming. Which is why we leave so much of it in our wakes . . . :)

Exactly I have ADHD. I leave lots of clutter but piles of junk aren't very interesting.

But anyway I think the box is pretty cool

As someone with every medical disorder and disease known to man, I have to say that this box art is AMAZING! :D

I like the cover art, but it really is focused on western civilizations a bit too heavily, as I commented in my blog today. Might have been nice to see some images of Mongol hordes (wink), Samurai, African tribes, South American natives or some such in there as well.

Wow, it looks awesome! But still have to wait 56 days to release......

I liked the placeholder better. That looks like a highly polished version of the awesome battle scenes I would draw when I was 8 years old and bored in school.

Did the artist forget to research the aesthetics tech?

Edit: The more that I look at it, the more I suspect plagarism. I'm pretty sure I drew that exact scene some time in second or third grade. The artist just cropped out my fighter jets and added the pyramids and Eiffel tower.

its good, but to be honest, i liked the placeholder art of the stark black box with the civ V logo better. it was... dignified? distinguished? it gave the feel that you were looking at something important and weighty. maybe that was too serious for a game, but im a firm believer in the minimalist / simpler-is-better school of graphic design.

anyways, interesting art. ALOT going on.

I was expecting an Iowa class battleship. Imagine my surprise when I looked up close ... the 2-gun forward turrets, the 3 anchor stations ...

the BISMARCK!

The current box art is too cluttered, too focused on war, and not near focused enough on the CiV epic.

Petition to Change the Civilization V Box Art:

Seriously? A petition to change the box art?

Fine, you don't like it. Is it THAT big of a deal that you need to start a petition?

And for the record, I personally don't see it as cluttered. Nor do I see it too focused on war; you're just focusing on the foreground too heavily. As I said in one of my earlier posts, half of the art is showing mankind's greatest creative achievements, but in the foreground is mankind's worst creation, a plague that we have been unable to escape. And again, it's only half the art.

And they probably only revealed the design after they send it off to the printer, so yeah, a petition is going to have a massive effect.

Very pretty. That box is really going to brighten up my recycle bin.

People who become supar fans of anything will critique anything made by that franchise to death even when there is nothing wrong with it. Even if it's a designer doing their job and marketing, I know... fans think they are the designer and those people are the tools. People who know nothing about design trying to tell a professional how to do their job is just silly. It's not my intention to offend anybody with a physical disorder but it's like a life-long crippled person trying to teach somebody else to run.

Here is some semi-rebuttals for some of the popular critiques in this thread.

1. It is not cluttered - yes there is a lot of visual action but visually it's broken into two fields. Action and the brand name. The action is in the background and the brand in the foreground. One is for grabbing attention and the brand's purpose is obvious, to remember the product. It's simple to follow visually from the biggest element to the smaller, to the smallest. It has proper contrast. When you have trouble figuring out what the product is about because of so many different elements and it's lacking contrast then you have "clutter"

2. Just having the Civ logo on a black background is pretty don't get me wrong. Sometimes "less is more" and sometimes "more is more." It would make more sense if the brand was universally known to keep it simple like that but not practical. It might make you pick it up and want to read more about it but not everyone is like you. Someone new to the series will more be intrigued by the visual action on the cover and remember it by what is shown.

3. They did a great job! But that is just my opinion. <--and this is really what we should be discussing :p

I know I'm new to these forums and I don't want to step on anybodies toes but this is pretty ridiculous. I'm a graphic designer as-well and I often see these kind of silly remarks.

Ok - Let's discuss your opinion: You're pretty much right - except for the fact that they should have the SPACE NEEDLE on the cover like they did for Civ 4!

Because the Space Needle is very cool and Seattle is the centre of the civilized world.
