Breaking News: reformed English now only official EU language!

Everyone in England is supposed to learn either French or German or both. Less intelligent ones learn Spanish. I'm not smart enough to learn any.

Well I'll be working on learning at least 4 languages, so I beat you even though I'm American.:p
Will be? I intend to speak English, Norwegian and Germany fluently, as well as knowing Japanese (for geek purposes), and Greek (linguistics and NT studies).

And FYI, I'm also American. SUPPLIES!

because my mother language is english, i never had to learn it per se. what is so easy about learning english?
The grammar for example.

Chukchi if someone dumped you in a French village for a few months you'd come back speaking a good deal of basic French, learning language out of school or study is only possible by immersion in a culture of that languages speakers, I learnt alot but not much by joining a french gaming League but I wont be playing games for a while so no doubt I'll forget much of it as it eats into my study time.

If it's any conselation my language skills are very poor also. even English is a struggle as I can't spell too well, although my mother has a language unto herself in writing so I'm not too bad comparitively.

I think Europe should adopt Mandarin as its official language, but what do I know.

Don't worry. Arabic will be Europe's official language soon enough.....:mischief:

I'm Working on Mandarin right now. I will also learn Russian (Because Russia is an awesome country) and Arabic (or mayber Persian, I don't know). Maybe I'll also learn Japanese and Spanish (It's getting really useful in the United States right now) Most of those languages are all completely different from eachother, so that gets me extra points. Beat that. :p

And FYI, I'm also American. SUPPLIES!

American living in Norway?

Not quite we say that only the English have the right to butcher English ;)

If the Germans also "reform" their language, English and Germans will be speaking the same language. Maybe it will be called "Germglish" or the "United Germanic Language" or something. America can still keep English wich will be known as American.:crazyeye:

Why hasn't anybody suggested Esperanto, or whatever that goofy artificial language is?

Personally, I'd like to see Quenta or Sindarin adopted.

I'll see you Hebraic and Aramaic and raise you Latin. Not that there's a serious chance that either of us will really learn all of these.

Correct. I have a passport photo floating somewhere on the NES forum.

Ironically, Tolkien's languages are *more* popular and widespread than Esperanto. Esp comes in at third, Klingon second.

You mean Quenya, even the Noldir or high elves speak Sindarin outside of there realm, I'd go for Sindarin :)

Tolkien Geek alert.

Do you actually speak any Elvish because some people over here do although I've never gone that far into geekdom.:)

People can learn Klingon at the university near where I live as part of a linguistics course.

Isn't there a joke in Europe that goes some thing like: If you speak three languages you are trilingual, if you speak two languages you are bilingual, if you speak only one language you are British.

if so its a crappy stereotype. the english intellectuals, come io, know other languages.

and foxmccloud, are you a member of the BNP by any chance?

I only speak two languages, and am not too sure if speaking three is a very good idea, unless you aim for a career as a translator or comparative linguist.
English generally seems to be working fine as a practical common language, and another positive thing regarding it for me is that it has enough greek words anyway :)

What was that other stereotype about the British... oh yeah, they can't take a joke! :p

I think everybody should just keep their own languages for every day conversation but everybody should also learn english. Further I think that all official international EU conversation should be done in english, the nonsense of translating everything into 30 languages in the EU parlaiment should stop ASAP.

Does that mean you think that Uygur speakers in China shouldn't learn Chinese, Quechua speakers in Peru shouldn't learn Spanish and Komi speakers in Russia shouldn't learn Russian but all learn English instead?

Whew! Just as long as the don't get rid of the ph combo as a substitute for f. :mischief:

It doesn't matter what the EU politicians decide or not, the general population of the world will eventually decide for themselves.
