[BtS] DIPLOMACY: a mod for Diplogames!

I did make some, but I am redoing them. So the Deluxe edition will definitely have the Phoenicians, Assyrians, and Hittites. I am not sure if any of these will make it into the regular version though, I am considering adding the Phoenicians but I haven't decided yet, there's still a lot of work to be done so I don't want to add more prematurely.

Ive been wanting to create a Hittite civ, but the complete lack of hittite units have been holding me back. I need a complete set the size that Bakuel usually releases, and as you know thats a lot of work (especially the research on getting them to look accurate). If you need help flushing out the set let me know.

I could probably produce a full Hittite set (Warrior, Archer, Spearman, Axeman, Chariot, Swordsman, Horseman, Crossbowman, Longbowman, Maceman, Pikeman and Knight), although it wouldn't be nearly as good looking as Bakuel's stuff. And I wouldn't be sure of the total historic accuracy, a lot of it would mostly be based on paintings I have seen of the battle of Kadesh.

I gotta get going in a minute but I found some awesome images I could use to make Hittite and Assyrian units. Unfortunately I can't imagine anything to use as a base, and unfortunately my unit-making skills are nowhere near that of a Bernie14 or especially a guy like Bakuel. So I am going to need some advice... here is THE THREAD that has a lot of images, its from a CivIII unit-request thread.

If anyone has any suggestions on any of these for what units to use as a base etc. please let me know. I have some decent enough stuff to work with, but its still going to be extremely difficult to get anywhere near the quality of some of the units that have been made lately.

Everything is going pretty well, I'm still in the flavoring phase. So I'm doing a lot of playtesting to make sure all of the units I have made/altered look good, I've managed to get everything more streamlined. Prior to this I did everythign hap-hazardly, which resulted in the delay of Module Pack III's release to the point that a new version of civ came out, which meant I had to redo everything. I should be done with the flavoring portion of the mod within the next week or so, which is not difficult but extremely tedious and time-consuming. I am also working with some people on getting some units finished, a lot of them will be unique to this mod, with AchillesZero and Bakuel so this mod is going to have some really awesome units that other mods will probably drool over (and of course will be able to have, I am not a mizer after all). One caviot to streamlining my work is my hiatus from LH-making. I know its probably unfortunate for a lot of people who were promised/wanted Askia et al, but if I focus on one thing I time it gets done better.

Once I finish flavoring the base-civ's units I will add Polynesia, Israel, Iroquois, Sioux and Franks to the mod. I am considering adding some ancient middle-eastern civs like the Phoenicians, Hittites, Nubians and/or Assyrians but I might save those for the modules/Deluxe Edition. I haven't decided upon that just yet. After that I will be adding the new religions and then following that the ethnic city-styles/improvements. Once all of the artwork is finished I'll add in a few new future techs/units/buildings/wonders/features. Then I'll add stuff like Inquisitors and Spy Promotions and possibly some new features that I will, as usual, ask you guys about.

So its a long way coming, but believe me I will keep you updated on any and all changes I make to the base game. Ultimately I want to keep it as close to the normal game as possible while still offering enough changes to warrant a new mod.

On a more LITERAL basis, I am currently playing a test-game as the Mayans with the Byzantines, Russians, Celts, Aztecs, and Malinese as my rivals. Part of it is to check for CTD/MAFs (which I am happy to report have not occured so far and I am in the industrial era) but also to make sure I didn't make any mistakes in the animations or XML. I have noted a few issues which get resolved as I play. The Mayan set looks great, and so do the others. I suppose on my next playtest I'll provide some screen shots so you guys can follow along with what I am doing.

What I am considering at this point is to save and offer a test mod to a few people after each interval I pass. So once I finish flavoring the civs I'll probably send a couple of you guys a test-mod to try out in case I missed anything. Then I'll do the same thing after I add the new leaders and civs, then I'll do it again after I add the new future techs and units and so on and so forth until I am sure the mod is as perfect as I can possibly create. But do not confuse my lack of posting with inactivity, I work on this mod at least as much as possible everyday. I am glad you are interested, and I hope you ultimately LOVE the finished product. It may not be as over-the-top as a mod like Quot Capita or Legends of Revolution, but I hope that when I am finished this is a good compromise between maintaining the original game-mechanics of BtS while adding enough new features to emulate a new expansion to the game.

EDIT: I just want to say to those of you who waited the SIX MONTHS (yes, SIX MONTHS) for Module Pack III to be released only to see it fall by the wayside - MODULE PACK III WAS BASICALLY FINISHED when BtS 3.19 came out. In fact all of the civs in it were playable, there were only a few graphics/traits/stats/etc. issues involved that prevented me from releasing it. I just don't like releasing crappy products. So there isn't going to be much of a wait between the release of Diplomacy II and all of her module packs. So there will be a flood of material once the base mod is finished.

EDIT2: @ I'll do the next playtest w/ screens as China so you can see the Chinese set in action!!! There is also some talk of a Sun Yat Sen LH. Currently China has Mao Tse Tun and Qin Shi Huang as the leaders (obviously) and I am adding Tang Taizong from the first Diplomacy mod as well as Empress Dowager Cixi (courtesy of Ekmek). Now, I understand that Cixi may not have been the best choice, and there are plenty of able-bodied Chinese leaders being discussed in the LH Request thread. The reason I am thinking of using Cixi is because I think there should be more female leaders in the game, but I might consider a different fourth leader for China. I am limiting every civ to four leaders. Civs like Rome, which will be getting a new leader in the new mod, already have four leaders. But I will be dropping one of them to make room for the new one. So if you have ideas for a new leader keep in mind that I am limiting the leader-roster to FOUR PER CIV.

Although I do agree that there should be more female leaders in Civ4, Cixi and Jengu seem like bad choices to me. The latter because I generally oppose adding semi-legendary/legendary leaders when real ones are available, and the former because China already has one terrible leader (Mao.) It'd be like giving Rome Nero and Commodus.

However, that's just me being picky.
My recommendations would instead be Akihito and Kangxi.

Kangxi is a possibility, but I don't want to add another show-Emperor to Japan. I already have Hirohito.

Also do you suggest I get rid of Dido, Gilgamesh, and Hiawatha? All arguably "legendary" leaders?

Dido and Gilgamesh I'm okay with because one is a mostly historical founder, and the other... I can't come up with a single replacement for the other. Well, that really applies to both, really.
Hiawatha I'm in a grey area with. I'd like to replace him, but I can't really come up with anyone equal to him in importance that could do the job.
It's all a matter of if someone who -is- 100% historical and of equal or similar importance is available to replace them.

Are Caligula(I mean the Roman Leader)and Jingu well-known in the west? I seldom here about them in China.
As for Jingu, although I know few about her,I still think she is a good choice because there are no classical Japanese leaders. In fact, Shotoku Taishi or Prince Shotoku( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_Shōtoku ) is another good choice but with no LH.Some one like her should be added.

Caligula, like most Roman Emperors, is rather well-known in the west. This is partially because of Rome's huge influence upon western civilization. In fact many languages (including this one we are using now), laws, customs etc. (et cetera being a Latin and thus Roman term as well) comes from Rome (of course Rome borrowed their culture from many others, namely Greece's) in one way or another and to varying degrees. Caligula is known primarily for his ludicrous behavior (this guy would publicly have sex with other men and I don't mean that to denigrate homosexuality its just that having public sex with anyone in the middle of the forum as the Emperor of the known world was in poor taste, he attempted to make his horse a Senator, and I could go on and on about things he did, he was insane even by ancient standards) and also due to his treatment of early Christians. There is one notable story that he would have cruicified Christians set on fire during his dinner parties for use as "lighting." He is more infamous than anything else.

As far as Jingu goes; she is probably not very well known in the west. People who play civilization tend to like history more than people who play other games (such as first person shooters, fantasy games, sports games etc.) so would probably be more familiar with someone such as Jingu.

As far as the leader discussion; while it is important to discuss which leaders should be in the next version of this mod its quite early in the mod's development to truly decide upon it as it will be a few weeks before I get to that point in the mod. When I do though I will be making a lot of new LHs specifically for this mod, so that will probably be a more appropriate time to discuss it.

It should be mentioned that Caligula became -very- well known here after a notorious Malcolm McDowell film. Now he's become synonymous with gore and orgies/rape in pop culture.

If we're talking about leaders. Who will be the leaders of the Celts in the mod (except for Brennus and Boudica)? I remember you were talking about making Cartimandua. Since you said there will be a maximum of four leaders per civ, I would like to know what you're planning, because I was thinking about making Vercingetorix (I know MO already made one, but he looks goofy to me, so I think maybe I can make my own version).
Any news about Tamerlane, by the way? Could you at least show me a picture of what you have so far?
Oh, and the extra city lists I promised- you'll get them soon!

I'm still surprised Civ4 got Brennus instead of him.

Civ 4 is a perfect game. I learnt a lot about history and culture through it.
As you say,Capo, most Roman Emperors are world-known. The name of some emperors, like Julius Caesar,Augustus,Constantine, the Five Good Emperors, and even Nero, could be found in history textbooks of junior high school. But in China,Caligula isn't as infamous as Nero.
To tell the truth,I never find a better mod than yours. It will be even better if you put more pre-set historical maps or scenarios in it.

For Rome I would put Marcus Aurelius in the Leaderspack, add that Marc Antony LH you like as Trajan, and add Seleucus from Civ Gold as Scipio Africanus.

I mean, really, he honestly looks exactly like Scipio.

Ideally, for me at least, the best Chinese leader to add would be Chiang Kai-Shek, for the reason that we have all WWII leaders (Roosevelt, Churchill, Hirohito, Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin), except him.

Chiang Kai-Shek would be awesome as well, though I can understand not including him (We have Mao from the same period of time.)

Don't forget we also have de Gaulle, King, Curtin, Franco and Haile Selassie.

I forgot them! I didn't even know Selassie was a WWII leader.

I just remembered that Ibn Saud is another WWII leader.
