Bug Reports Center

I've just experienced a similar problem. Basiaclly there seems to be a problem with my Realtek AC97 on board audio when it comes to playing the in-game music (not the intro music). After disabling the on-board sound (or disabling the in-game music) no problems. Also game runs fine with my Gamesurround Fortissimo III. Hope this is of use.

This bug has been mentioned in other threads on these forums but it does not seem to be present in this ('Bug Reports Centre') thread. I would consider this bug critical and therefore believe it should be posted here as well.

Steps to reproduce

i. Start a mulit-player game and password-protect your civ.
ii. Once in the game, change the name of you civ.
iii. Save the game and exit.
iv. Try to resume the multi-player game. After choosing your civ and typing in the password, you are told 'wrong password' even though it's correct.

The problem

The problem is that you cannot get back into the game with your civ.

Attempted work-arounds

Things that have been tried by other members of these forums:

i. Directly modifying save files via hex editors to change the hashed password string to what it was before. However, this results in the game crashing to desktop when attempting to load the modified save file. It seems that save files have a checksum string at their end which is compared against file's contents. To quote an extract from 1.52 README:
Fix for competitive games: Password-protected saves can no longer be easily stripped of their passwords, and the assets checksum in the save can no longer be modified by external means
ii. Entering the game as an AI civ (if there is one in the game), voting for continuing the game without waiting for the human players, and then saving it. This save can then be loaded as the passwords seem to be stripped. Problems with that work-around: one turn would have been made for the human civs by AI during that previous load and save. More importantly, subsequent saves and loads result in the exactly same problem as before, with the game refusing to accept your password (or lack of it if you didn't set one on the 2nd load).

 Why is this still happening? (ctd). It should not be happening regardless. As long as we meet the specs it shouldn't be happening. I more than meet the specs and I've altered heaps of stuff in the civ 4 ini file back and forth to no evail, I've also changed video cards from ati to nvidea to no evail. I tried altering in the game options the graphics to medium and low also the anti aliasing to no evail. i also tried different changes in the nvidea settings to no evail. I also upgraded my driver to 81.89 and to 71.89, 7777, 78.01 and a few others. Its the same problem i had with the 1.09 patch and 1.52 patch. It either reports a device problem, or random memory problem or nothing at all. It does't happen often at the beginning, though it still does but more so towards the 400 to 500 ks save. IS THERE ANYBODY ELSE IN MY DILEMMA or am i part of a very very very very tiny unimportant minority.

same here. specs: amd 3000+, 1gb ram, geforce 6600 gt. ctd's every now and then, even in the beggining of a game (say 20 or 30th turn), standard map  :(

Autocon, have you checked the temperature of the GPU on your video board?
I had similar random failures, running with an nVidia 6800 GT. Then I ran in Windowed mode with the video utility that showed the GPU temperature. It showed the GPU temperature was 112° Celsius, which is VERY hot. I added (extreme) cooling, and got it so it ran at about 80° Celsius, and it then ran OK.

i haven't checket it david. would you know the name of the video utility you mentioned? thanks

Graphics bug:

I can't see most of the terrain on the large map. It's just black! Resources appear, but the land does not. Units just move around a black background.

Possibly related: the animated leaders? They appear as floating teeth and eyes, no faces or bodies. Sort of interesting, but...

I have installed the 1.52 patch.

Help?

HOTSEAT BUGS:

- (Critical) In Hotseat diplomacy, you usually can't trade gold/gold per turn with other human civs, especially if you are not player 1. You can type in how much gold you want to trade, but when you press OK, it doesn't appear in the "OFFERS" area.
- When someone wins a Hotseat game the Hall of Fame screen shows the player whose turn is after the winning player as the winner.
- In Hotseat games, when you get the message that tells you it’s your turn, pressing the Enter key sometimes doesn’t work. If this happens, after you click OK it skips your turn. - In Hotseat games, a diplomatic resolution that would appear to pass (by the number of votes it received) sometimes fails.

GENERAL BUGS:

- The game sometimes crashes when you go into World View or the Military Advisor, especially in the later stages of the game or on a large world with many civs.
- Sometimes the Save Game dialog box doesn’t work properly (e.g. you can’t type anything in to change the name of the file). If this happens at the end of turn, and you press the Enter key, it ends your turn.
- Sometimes the tool-tips that you get when you put your mouse over something disappear. This is important if you’re trading with another civ and you can’t find out what the cost of a technology is.
- Occasionally when you go into the Science Advisor, it flashes on the screen for the moment then returns to the main game.
- The technologies displayed on the Science Advisor are not always correct; some might appear not to have been researched when they have in fact been researched, and vice versa.
- The game only ever autosaves every few turns; the user should be able to set the frequency of autosaves as high as every turn. (This isn’t actually a bug, but it is a design flaw, considering that, especially in multiplayer, hours of game play could be wasted if the game crashes.)
- The ice intermittently appears black, and so does the building that you’re constructing in the city, as well as the flag that the Great Prophets hold.
- Occasionally, for no clear reason, the graphics for one of your units will march away towards some random location on the screen. The unit is actually still where it always was, and once you give it an order it returns to its real position, but it can be disconcerting the first time you see it.
- Once the list of units in the lower left part of the screen listed every unit multiple times, as well as the terrain, defence bonus, etc.
- (Trivial) In the opening movie, the Roman fort on the hill momentarily disappears about halfway through.

- The game only ever autosaves every few turns; the user should be able to set the frequency of autosaves as high as every turn. (This isn’t actually a bug, but it is a design flaw, considering that, especially in multiplayer, hours of game play could be wasted if the game crashes.)

You can change this in the ini file.

My game crashes to the desktop on the very start of the turn where I'm supposed to win a Space Race victory (i.e., the turn when my final space ship component is completed) have not tried other victories yet...

Civ4 has run almost perfectly on my machine up till then. Graphics, start up/wonder movies, and gameplay all were working to near perfection. (Still had the weird bright splotches on Cleopatra's face though)

I've gone into my .ini file and tried disabling the in-game movies and disabling audio ...no luck. Still crashed to the desktop at the very start of the victory turn.

Very frustrating when you can't win the game on the last turn! Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated. I've got Intel Celeron 2.8GHz, 1GB RAM, ATI Radeon 9250 256MB PCI graphics card.

I went into my PythonDbg.log file and it looks like Civ knows the game is ending:

load_module CvGameInterface

PY:Yayoi has grown
PY:Avignon has grown
iTurn: 422

Game is ending

Hallelujah, Hallelujah...my Civ IV is working!

I uninstalled my ATI drivers, control center, etc. and downloaded the new Radeon Omega 6.3 driver from omegadrivers.net and installed them. So far, it has completely fixed my problem with the victory screen and I finally have proof that I won.

ATI really needs to do a better job with their driver updates.

Yes, I've got the same problem as madviking. It's very annoying since you can't switch specialists around, see resources or GP point stuff, and none of the menus scroll.

Future Tech bug

This might come under 'feature or bug?'

I've just played one game now as alexander on settler level and i reached the end (about 2000 AD) and started researching future tech.
It said it should take 3 turns for it to finish ( i was on fast speed) but it didnt complete research. Just as it reached the end it kept going backa few paces then started research again. I completed a space race victory by 2035 AD but it still didnt complete research. Whats wrong?

well, did the name of the tech change to Future Tech 2? and it also sounds like some kind of bug.

That's how it's supposed to work. There are an infinite number of levels of Future Tech. You just keep researching one after another.

personally I just turn the research slider down all the way after I research the future tech thing because I don't need all that research anymore.

More details please. What kind of video card do you have and what version of the drivers are you running. In either case, try installing the latest version. If you are using an ATI card, consider installing the third party Omega drivers.
