"Builders" as the new Workers... now with charges.

Not sure how I should feel about builders. The problem in civ 5 with workers was that in the early game was ok to move them to improve plots - there were decisions to make which had impact on how the early empire growed. After a while tho, especially when waging a war, managing workers was becoming a burden - not a fun stuff to do. The decision aspect had no longer much of an impact on how the empire doing. So I had hope firaxis will get rid of workers all together and replace them with some public works mechanic. Turned out we have some hybrid mechanic which we yet to see if it adresses and solvers problems workers had. Im optimistic, I will give warm welcome to anything which will replace workers.

On a sidenote, did anybody wonder what that improvement with the civ5-academy icon was that the builder could build?

This is not anything new as workboats have worked that way in Civilization IV and V.

Just that the builder are a workboat that build improvements on land tiles.

This is how I thought of it. They were hired to work a task or two and then their jobs were obviated. Then, hundreds of years later when a new administration wants to do a bunch of building projects they hire new crews of workers (a builder).

They probably stayed behind to mow the grass and keep the buildings in good shape for your new improvement.

There will be a whole envoy quest line asking you to deal with a mysterious wraith that has been snatching the city-state builders. You'll need Daedric weapons and armor for that one.

this is a great feature. once you are done building improvements they just sit there or you delete them anyway.

Plus this adds a new decision making element. Do i make a new builder or start making a new building, warrior etc

Agreed, I'd rather not pay maintenance and have a chance later to make a new decision

I agree. It adds more thought to your cities' build orders.

I don't like how tiles are instantly upgraded. I also don't really like how builders have charges.

I can see it, but can you not see that in a way it takes some planning AWAY (immediate build of improvements)?

I don't think it's better or worse, just a re-imagining that will take some getting used to.

Not really. Each time you make a builder, you have 1-3 improvements in mind to build. If you want more improvements, you have to make another Builder. Do you make that now, or do you need a district, building, or military unit first? There's new prioritization that balances improvements vs districts vs buildings vs military.

How much planning was in improvement building time? Build road first or improvement first?

I love the new builder system because it finally removes the tedious micro of workers or automating them and having a bunch of them sit around to do nothing. Gameplay should trump realism. Plus I love that they now instant build tile improvements. I hated that you would have to wait several turns for a simple farm to be built. It will also help make cities better faster. I never understood why so much of civ games was just waiting for something to finish.

They was named workers for a reason, players really need to work with them to get anything done.

Builders just build, less work for the player.

In the first civ you really needed to "work" with the settler to get it build things fast - waking it and then setting it back to work you could finish an improvement in one turn. Such a nice bug...
