Deity, quick speed, Pangea, Standard size with low sea level, domination only.

So, I play china, get 3 scouts and start building stone hedge. I grab a worker from a city state and start moving him home. About 6-7 turns from completing Stonehenge then I see Askia declare war on me. He has 2 chariot archers, 2 regular archers, and like 5 warriors come and raze my city. I lost on turn 19 or 20. :/// WTH. That's just cheap.

They do that if they're close enough to you when they start. If you had three Scouts, you should have discovered him with them and reacted.

They start with much of that army on Deity, and if the AI senses that you're weak and nearby it's going to come give you a hug. Plan accordingly.

If you can waste his army without losing troops, you can counterattack and walk all over his empire. You should have been able to beat what he sent easily enough if you had built Warriors after the initial Scout, then fortified up on rough terrain, withstood Warrior assaults and then thrashed the arrow flingers. Those things die like flies to melee.

A long ass distance. I don't remember exactly but it was over 15 tiles I think. Over 10 for sure.

3 scouts?

Usually if you build warriors instead you can camp out on hills and behind rivers and have them suicide on you. Just be careful with your unit use. Also if you think they're gonna come for you, you can maybe declare on them first before they have all their units organized coming in your direction, pick off a couple guys in isolation.

EDIT: and yeah like Lyoncet said, Askia is a real *$&%@.

On immortal and deity I think you really need an early archer if there is an AI nearby.
Warriors aren't efficient enough to deal with the massive AI horde, but with warriors fortified on rough terrain, you can use city bombardment and an archer to whether a pretty strong attack.

3 scouts is a mistake IMO, you need combat units.

10 tiles is not that far, only 5 turns. Remember that, when comparing to Civ4.

I don't think its really AI related. *Any* AI will rush you on these difficulty levels.

But once you've killed off their initial army, you're fine. They can't rebuild another fast enough.
