Burmese stand up to "Evil Dictatorship"

I really want India to act tough in this matter rather than giving empty words like hoping for peace or whatever . The thing is if India keeps pressure on Burma , it will go totally to Chinese influence which India is afraid of . So unless they are sure there will be a regime change they don't want to get commited for fear of getting on the wrong side of the Burmese government . I say take the risk and isolate Burmese Government and a military invasion as a part of a larger coalition should do the trick.

Burmese government has been playing the India vs China card for too long.

Burma: Thousands dead in massacre of the monks dumped in the jungle

Thousands of protesters are dead and the bodies of hundreds of executed monks have been dumped in the jungle, a former intelligence officer for Burma's ruling junta has revealed.

<snip>

Aye.

And, of course, I'm the foolish one for suggesting we use the threat of invasion (or invasion itself, as a last resort) to stop this.

I have a question to Indians who want to invade Burma:

Why not Bangladesh?

You guys completely surround it...

We had invaded it once, when similar atrocities were happening. Put a stop to them, and gave the country independence.
So if you went to Burma, you wouldn't take over?

You would just go to stop the atrocities?

Why would they? It would be a hassle and make them look like war mongers.
If they go in right now and do as Ane is suggesting it would make them look like heroes world wide.

Yep we did the same with Bangladesh in 1971 . Just do a quick military operation to remove the government . Let UN peace keeping forces or so conduct peaceful elections and exit leaving a good ally in the region. But I'm not sure the present government is bold enough to do that . And even if it was bold enough I'm pretty sure China wouldn't like democracy next door and too many parallels will be drawn to buddhist monks protests in Tibet. I don't think India will risk a potential conflict with China , hence all pipe dreams or more precisely "what would you do if you are the leader of nation" category .

Only hope I can see a multi-national peace-keeping force from UN not stupid sanctions which hurt the common people . But we know the UN is toothless with veto powers and all so it will just remain pretty words from all countries till some other international event captures the attention :( .

Do you think it would be totally out of the question to have a joint assault with China? Say if you had U.N. approval first?

It seems unlikely that China would be up for it but, If you ask them first maybe they will think that since you will probably do it anyway and offered to bring them that if they don't go they will look bad and go for it. *

* Was that one sentence? Who wants to grade me on that?

Of course not. That would be insane.

You would just go to stop the atrocities?

Stop the atrocities, impose stability, hold a proper set of elections, get out. Should be doable within six months to a year - the apparatus already exists. If it takes too long, get UN peacekeepers (we contribute a large number of troops to them, anyway) to do the election management.

Attacking Burma and risk war with China? No I think not. Especially since relations with China have been improving of late.

If China offers up support and a joint military operation to take out the regime that would be tremendous . The only countries with notable influence in Burma are China , India and ASEAN to a certain extent . I think it would do a lot of good to India - China relations as well. But it is impracticle .

Why would China use its armed forces for establishing a democracy when it itself is not . Secondly China is rather uncomfortable of growing Indo -US ties and theories flowing out that the relationship is to counter the China threat . The recent Indo -US and other countries naval wargames in Bay of Bengal have not helped the matters as well. The region where the war-games were performed accounts to around 80% of Chinese trade routes.

Without Chinese approval it is impossible to do anything in Burma as for one it has veto power in UN and also because of its huge influence with the present Burma Dictatorship.

India could try to get ASEAN support but the ASEAN nations are all talk and no action...just like India.

Even with China's ambition of annexing Northern Burma (minority problems), Chinese government still wouldn't topple a friendly regime who is a perfect buffer state between China and India, and to a less extent, China and Thailand.

Sounds like India needs George Bush. We'll send him over to run your place after he's done here :)

No parallel? He had the EXACT same plan that you just put forth!
