Does President Bush know that the public laughs at him for mispronouncing "nuclear" as "nukular?" I'm pretty sure he watches the news or other tv shows and notice people making fun of him for that. Why doesn't he simply correct himself? It's not like it takes much effort.
BTW: "nukular" is not a Texas accent right? If it is, then ignore the post.

Firstly, what's the point of this thread?

On-topic: Why should he bother? His job is to run the country. How does pronouncing a word differently than some other people measure his ability to do that? If he changed, people would mock him for that as well.

And don't tell me that its a sign of his lack of intelligence - as much as people mock him for that, you don't get to run a country if you're that stoopid.

I'm sure everyone pronounces some words incorrectly. If that's the one that the media likes to bring up, then why should he care?

Carter said nucular too. The Republicans mocked him for it. In the long run pronunciation is less important than a person's good works. I would rather see Bush try to improve on that than his semantics.

In Europe, people question not only the political goals of Bush, but his intelligence, too.

There are thousands of pics showing Bush with a puzzled expression on the face, holding books the wrong way, there are several hints that he was not the brightest student and stuff like that.

But I must agree with Drewcifer

In the long run pronunciation is less important than a person's good works. I would rather see Bush try to improve on that than his semantics.

Reporter: Do you think United States credability is at stake over finding Weapons of Mass Destruction ?

Bush: Ummm I not sure what that means
Bush /Looks confused

Advisor next to him /has that "your kidding me" look on hes face.

EDIT: Bush is smart all right. At manipulating the media, poltical campaigning and charisma of personality. At the very least he was not ready to be President.

As much I am not a fan of Dubya, I hardly think this is something we can criticise him for.

Besides, there are plently of words where pronunciation and spelling have been altered from British English into American English... "aluminium" into "aluminum", "Medieval" into "Medeval", "missile" into "missle" (don't understand that one  ). Perhaps, one day, Bush English will evolve into a widely-spoken tongue.

Hordes of English-speakers pronounce it as "nukular". I figure who-ever started it was pretty dyslectic, but by now it's simply the normal pronunciation for millions of people. If you want to complain about the Prez's English, there's any number of more reasonable complaints.

Lyndon Johnson also said nukular, so, yes, I do believe it is a Texas thing.

You have reminded me of a beer commercial "What are you doing? This is not ready yet.." ahh... :D

Maybe you need to be European to have seen that? :hmm: *shrug*

I just don't like the idea of a man being in control of the largest arsenal of weapons in the world, and he can't even pronounce correctly.

Why doesn't the government pay for him to see a logopaedist?

You really think Bush watches the news on TV? Shouldn't he then be able to locate the countries he invades on a map?

No, seriously, it is very progressive of US voters to give someone a chance who's not able to speak his own language correctly. :applause: After all he hasn't got the job of an English teacher, why should you have to be able to read and write to become the president? After all you can always order someone to do this for you.

Isn't it sad if ignorance of your own language becomes a commonly accepted standard? 1000 years from now well be back to communication through grunts.

I'm not sure whether you're commenting on my ignorance of the English language, my ignorance of the American language, my ignorance in general, or human ignorance in general. Perhaps you shouldn't answer. ;)

I meant it in general; German too gets standardised so that common errors become a part of the language (Example: Mayonaise becomes Majonäse). Nucular is not a word. If you neglect speech you are not far away from neglecting what you say. Also it shows that you haven't had a proper education. Unfortunately this is also getting more and more common today.

Never fall for the 'media myth' that Bush is stupid.

He is a skilled manipulator.
