Bush Wants Strong EU

Quote from the BBC article.

The BBC's Jonathan Beale in Washington says the Bush administration is concerned that the EU's internal dispute will lead to a period of introspection.

He adds that President Bush wants the EU to continue the process of accepting new members.

"The United States continues to support a strong European Union as a partner in spreading freedom and democracy and security and prosperity throughout the world," Mr Bush said.

"My message to these leaders and these friends is that we want a Europe strong, so that we can work together to achieve important objectives and important goals.

"One of those important objectives and important goals is the advance of freedom in order to spread peace."

While I'm certainly happy to hear that Bush supports a stronger European Union I really do wish he would stop his assault on freedom on our side of the pond.

So basically, you posted the article to take a potshot at George Bush.

Nah, he's made that too easy. I live in a "red" state and even here there's a lot of grumbling about his stance on Social Security, Real ID, and threat to veto the lifting of some of the provisions of the Patriot Act.

The post was to show that America supports the EU and encourage them not to give up on it easily.

What happened to "the administration doesn't represent the U.S. population?"

Who says America supports the EU?

Another reason why I hate it when people associate me with Bush or any of the neocons in that administration.

I would if I were the U.S. president. A stable E.U. is a stable Europe, and could help ease the burden of stablizing & democratizing many countries, especially in Eastern Europe and Turkey. True, you can get bitter and same nasty trade and dioplomatic disputes; but all-in-all, the United Europeans are the best allies the Americans can get.

I hope he's just saying that and doesn't really mean it.

Why?
"He adds that President Bush wants the EU to continue the process of accepting new members."

Looking at the mess we are in by accepting new members before reforming the EU, it seems to me if Bush wants the EU to continue the process of accepting new members could actually lead to a weaker Europe.

I wish for it on the long term, but I think it's counter productive with our current EU organisation. We must reform ourselves before.

Well, I don't really care about what he says now. Two years ago, his administration sparked the current crisis in the EU (no, I don't blame it for our problems, it just uncovered the truth), than it exploited the divisions in Europe for its goals. Well, our shame, they just did what would I do in their position.

In fact, republicans don't have any interest in strong Europe. Broader Europe? Yes, the bigger the better, because the EU really has a stabilising effect on member and associated countries. But not stronger in the means of political unity.

Democrats are probably more open to this idea, because their goals obviously don't include maintaining and expanding of American "empire".

His comments seem to stress a desire for a strong ally to contain whoever the enemy may be in American interests. But as usual, he's shown a real lack of insight in calling for the continuation of EU expansion.
