SGOTM 1 - Results and Congratulations.
No fewer than 140 players in 19 teams signed up to play the first SGOTM for Civ4. Congratulations to all who took part, and thank you for making it a very interesting competition.
For the first game in this new format, Gyathaar set a fairly straightforward map, and you, playing as Egypt, were required to achieve a fast Domination or Diplomatic victory. A little spice was added in the form of a locked state of hostility between Egypt and the Incas, and a locked state of peace with India.
A couple of teams discovered that the locked state of peace with India could be flipped into a locked state of war by declaring war on India's ally. All the team threads and spoilers make very enjoyable and instructive reading, but it is particularly worth reading the Rat Pack's turn log for a demonstration on how to wrest victory from the jaws of defeat following this unexpected turnaround.
As expected, the fastest victories went to the Dominators, but the third place went to a Diplomatic team, and six other diplomatic wins were achieved, including a *very* late run completed today by madviking. Only one team was unable to finish in time for the results publication, and one team suffered a diplomatic defeat.
In view of the high turn-out for this game we decided to award gold, silver and bronze laurels to the fastest three teams, as well as the traditional wooden cutlery set to the lowest scoring finishers. The race for first and second places was very closely fought, with Peanut just reaching the tape ahead of CFR. The Geezers delivered the fastest Diplomatic victory to take third place.
So, to the victors the spoils ....
The Gold Laurel for the fastest finish is awarded to:-
