C2C Will not load up

Okay, so, I made a new account for this site because this is really infuriating and I have no clue as to how to fix it.

Today I had bought the entire collection of Civ 4 on steam during their Autumn sale event because I had been hearing my friend always talking about Caveman 2 Cosmos and I thought, "hey, that sounds like it could be a lot of fun!"

I go and install the games through Steam, and then proceed to this site to download the mod pack from the direct source. I then proceed to go and extract the mod after it's done downloading with 7zip and place the folder that's in it to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization IV Beyond the Sword\Mods like I saw in various threads.

When I go and boot up the game, then proceed to mods and click on C2C to load up, nothing changes. The game minimizes for a second and appears to begin loading up the mod, but when I get back to the title screen, nothing changes. Nothing that indicates that C2C has been loaded up is there and it just acts as though it's a regular mod without actually adding anything to the game.

I think "Okay, that's really weird.", I then proceed to ask my friend for advice and he tells me to use the shortcut in the actual mod folder. I click on that and find the BTS.exe in the steam folders, but when I do, I get an error message saying "Mod\Caveman 2 Cosmos \ is an invalid mod directory", and then just proceeds to start the game up regularly.

I guess I should also mention that I'm on Windows 8, because I don't know if that has anything to do with the fact that both the manual install and programmed installer you can download both get the same message, and that I even launched the game in a different compatibility.

Is there any suggestions I can get that could possibly help fix this? As I've tried downloading and re-downloading the mod different times, not having the mod in the mod folder and try to launch it from there, etc... Please help.

Have you manually upgraded to 3.19 for BtS.

Also the very first time you load C2C it can take up to 15 minutes to load, depending on how many civs you placed on your map and how big the map is. But the second load will only take under 2 minutes.

Yes, BtS is on 3.19, as for how long C2C can take up to load, I'm saying it can't even get to that part as it sticks to the BtS main menu, nothing is added to the game after I 'load' the mod up from the mod menu.

Did you manually upgrade to 3.19 or auto upgrade? Auto upgrade does NOT work, even if it does say 3.19, its really not.

It automatically updated to 3.19. I would suggest uninstalling the game and reinstalling, but I think each time you try to install a game on Steam it automatically updates it to the latest version after it gets done installing, so unless I had lightning quick reaction and somehow stopped it at that point, I don't think I could update it regularly. (I could be completely wrong about this though).

Sounds like the same problem Alberts was trying to address in this post. I'm currently returning to my computer here and doing an update to see if I find I get the same problem myself so I can explore the issue and see what's going on there. I'm a bit behind after my vacation here.

Auto Update usually refers to the ingame Civ4 update mechanism which is busted. Steam should provide a viable 3.19 version.

I didnt install the mod in the steam folder.. but in my document folder (games are something like that) try that maybe it will work.. it works for me!

Just tried that, but unfortunately got the same problem as before. thanks for the idea though.

It just occurred to me that I should probably put some physical evidence down to prove my point, so here's some pictures basically showing what I mean.

Again, the mod is in the mod folder of the game folder, yet each time I try to boot it up I get this, and if I try to boot it up from the shortcut in the mod folder itself, I get an error message proclaiming that its an invalid directory.

Have you given yourself Admin rights to the Mod?

Just thought of something, is there a way to download a previous version of C2C? Because perhaps this entire thing has nothing to do with the game or system but rather the current version of C2C?

Outside chance here. Can you run any of the other mods that require 3.19? If not, then even though steam is saying it is updating to 3.19 it is using the game upgrade method which does not work. In which case you need to down load the patch and apply it. As I stated it is an outside chance.

Good thought process there, yeah try what DH just said.:)

So I just tried this, and as it turns out, getting the same problem as C2C. I had tried to download and install 3.19 before manually, but for whatever reason it wouldn't load up. I'm going to try to uninstall the games and reinstall them, as it turns out that there is an option with steam to NOT update games, so hopefully that'll work and I'll be able to manually install to 3.19 then.

So this didn't happen, as even though I told the system to not automatically update it, it would do it anyways. When I tried to install the 3.19 update even though it was already installed to 3.19, the update freezes and crashes. Yeah, I'm pretty much to the point of murdering someone at Steam or pirating the game to see if that even works because this is so infuriating.

.... So I feel like a massive moron who just ended up wasting everyone's time.

So instead of installing mods in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization IV Beyond the Sword\Mods folder
which is what I THOUGHT I had to do since I saw it on some places here on the forums, I had to instead install it in
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization IV Beyond the Sword\Beyond the Sword\Mods

If you look closely, you can see the extra "Beyond the Sword" folder in there, and apparently, even though I still get the same error message when you try to use the shortcut, you can get to the mod using the mod folder in-game. At least, that's what happened when I tried to reinstall the World War 2 1939 mod here from the civ fanatics forums. I'm in the process of re-downloading the C2C mod to see if that too works.

There are a few things left to try:

Can you start a normal Civ4 vanilla game with any settings?
Unzipping with 7zip sometimes leads to having a wrong folder structure. Please make sure that you have a folder named 'Caveman2Cosmos' in Mods and in 'Caveman2Cosmos' folders named 'Assets', 'Autolog', 'Docs' etc.
The C2C shortcut does not work if the path does not match your system. The correct path for the shortcut on your system would be
Code:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization IV Beyond the Sword\civ4beyondsword.exe" /mod=Caveman2Cosmos
Quotation marks around the path itself are mandatory, then a space then the rest.
The correct size for the 3.19 BTS.exe should be '12.473.656 Bytes'. Check details on the civ4beyondsword.exe. There may be 2 sizes shown.

Edit: Well a bit of info is now superflous but the path to the shortcut still stands :)
