Tech costs are map size dependant and you will mostly play with more civs on a larger map. The larger the map the higher the tech costs (you also have more cities to compensate).

There is also an effect that as more civilization that you have contact with know a tech, it will become cheaper for you to buy or research. For other civilizations, the same rule holds. This is to make it more difficult for a single civilization to run far ahead in research.

It is however very beneficial to be ahead in tech as you can sell this technology to everyone and become enormously rich.

That's called "Elimination" victory. ;) They're not "dumb" victories really - just "quick" ones - but personally I do prefer the longer and fuller games. :)

And under the 'game limits' you can determine the amount of cities you want to lose before the elimination takes place.

Apparently tech costs are affected by the number of civs remaining on the map. Is it that the more civs there are, the cheaper the techs or is it the other way about?
Here is the thread about research costs. The part of the formula of importance to this question is (1 - N/[CL*1.75]), where N is the number of civs that know the tech, and CL is the number of civs left. If nobody else knows the tech (such as in your case), the number of civs left doesn't matter; otherwise, more civs left means higher tech costs.

The scenario you were played either had Regicide or some other rule, the name of which I cannot remember, turned on. In Regicide each civilization gets a Leader unit, and if that unit dies then the whole civ collapses. The other mode is like sudden death, were if a civilization looses one city then their whole civ goes too. Pretty dumb rules if you ask me.

It really makes for a really quick game. Maybe that is why most of the other civs only built one city.

It is much too quick for me and takes a lot of the fun out of the game. :crazyeye:

Speaking of Research Costs, I've been using Grey Fox's Tech Calculator, which is pretty darn good.

Are there any other Tech Calculators around? :)

I want to ask a quick question.

How do you abandon a city?

Hi

I would like to know if it is possible to save a game as a scenario file, as it was possible to do in civ2

thank you very much

It is not possible to do it in any in-game designed way. There are some utilities around that can do it, though.

That sounds good. Where could I find one? I didn't find any in the "utilities" forum

thank you!

Firaxis didn't have the time or money to update the city graphics, so they weren't included in Conquests. In fact, unless you're playing an epic game you don't get to see the city view at all.

Thanks for the quick reply Turner...
I was afraid something wasnt ok with my graphic card...lol

Regards

ps...iam an old fanatic CIv player...trying hes best at deity level...

I know this is a nutty sounding question, but is it possible to have a civ develope more than one time on the same continent and actually be a totally different civ with cities of different names, different colors and different things when you contact them but they all three have the same name??????

I am not really nuts. I copied a biq file to another name and the Aztecs are in three widely seperate places, in different colors and with different stuff.
