Civ V Community!

First post, go easy on me. Looking for feedback on my idea for a "Camelot" custom Civ.

Leader - Arthur Pendragon, King of the Britons.

Unique Ability - “Right Makes Might” - Unlock 3 Social Policies when you construct "The Round Table". City States give double influence for killing nearby barbarians, clearing encampments, and giving troops. Receive 30 points for Pledging Protection.

Unique Building - The Round Table. Unique National Epic for Camelot. Must have built Castle’s in all cities. Requires "Chivalry". Double's cities defense.

Unique Unit - Knight of the Round Table - Replaces Knight. Does not require horses. Each Knight has unique positive and (possibly) negative special abilities. List of Knights below:

Lancelot
Gawain
Gallahad
Percevel
Leondegrance
...it goes on.

Anyways. I think that UA might be slightly broken, or need to be tempered by some draw back (Example, Social policies get more expensive by 15% culture with each new era. This would reflect Arthur's inability to keep up his innovative progress in the legends.)

Thoughts?

Thought of another idea as I walked away:

Unique Unit - Knight of the Round Table (Great General Replacement). Each Great General is a different Knight with different unique features. May be produced once Round Table is Built. Also generated the same as regular Great General.

Unique Building - Round Table (National Epic) - Must have built Castles in all cities. Double's Cities Defenses and +5 Faith. May produce Knigths of the Round Table. Provides a slot for Writing, Music, and Art.

Thoughts?

Here are a couple of thoughts I have:

- I don't recommend using a National Wonder as your unique building. Since you can only build one in the course of the game, it doesn't feel as impactful to the player as having a building they can construct in each of their cities.

- The Unique Ability doesn't really work as is. The first part should really be treated as another ability of the Round Table; the second part is probably impossible to code, since there's no GameEvent to check when you complete a City-State quest; and the third part is easily abusable, plus would need to be coded in a very clunky fashion.

- In the second Knight of the Round Table concept, I don't know if "May be produced once Round Table is built" would be possible to code. Two options that might work instead are:
(a) "may be purchased once Round Table is built" — this way, you could trigger a dummy policy (probably borrowing some code from the Landsknecht policy) that gets given to the player upon the completion of the Round Table
(b) "may be produced once [some tech] is researched" — this would basically have you create two statistically identical KotRT units, one of which replaces the Great General, and the other of which is a standalone unique unit unlocked at whatever tech you choose.

- You mention possibly introducing a drawback; I'd suggest mitigating bonuses rather than introducing drawbacks, since penalties often tend to decrease the fun for players.

(Sorry, I know I'm throwing a lot of things at you at once— I just figured it'd be more efficient to mention them all now rather than have to do each one in turn.)

Thanks that is great advice. Here is my revision. What do you guys think? Doable?

Civilization: Camelot

Leader - King Arthur Pendragon

Unique Ability - "Right Makes Might" - Completing City-State Quests produces double points.

Unique Unit - Knight of the Round Table - May be purchased with Faith or Gold (but not trained) in "Camelot" once the Round Table is built. Each new unit is a new Knight, and has different traits (both positive and negative). Does not require Iron or Horses. May upgrade and keep all traits.

Unique Building - Round Table - Requires Castle in all cities. Produces +10 culture and +10 faith. Required to buy Knight of Round Table. Contains 1 work of great Writing, Music, and Art.

Your UB is impossible given current mechanics because a building can only contain one type of Great Work, and not all 3.

Well, what do you think? Which one makes sense to keep? Part of this thread is to get feedback not only on the mechanics, but also on what would make sense thematically.

Personally I'd keep the Writing slot, to reflect the Arthurian literary tradition.

Also, like I mentioned earlier, I'd encourage you not to have the UB only be buildable once in your empire— especially if you want to make it a prerequisite for building your unique unit.

If you want to keep the UB as a national wonder, consider changing it around so it must be built BEFORE you can build castles (or whatever) - see my UB mod for Spain, where the national bull ring has to be built first.
