Can you identify a City-State by the color of its borders?

I feel like I've developed some sort of intuition, where I can tell whether or not a city-state is faith or non-faith when I first see the edges of its borders, before I officially "meet" it.

I figure that the only way I could have this intuition is if certain types of city-states (food, culture, faith, etc) had borders that were always certain colors. However I have noticed that some individual city-states have varying colors.

This is true to an extent as faith city states usually have white borders. The main issue comes from map size as there are only so many colors to go around so you may see a light lime border for a faith civ instead of the usual white.

Cahokia has white borders and its mercantile while Jerusalem is also white but its faith. I doubt city state colors have anything to do with what they give.

No, many CS have the same color borders. Your intuition is just luck, seeing the same one more than once.

There are something like 12 colors that a city-state's borders can be. There are no two city-states that have both the same color and type. CivFanatics figured this out in the run-up to BNW when we were trying to deduce which old city-states had been made into civs.

The thing is that I have noticed specific City-States having different colored borders in different games, so I'm aware that not every city-state has the same color borders in every game.

With that said, like x2Madda described, I have noticed that faith city-states tend to have white borders more often than others. This is a shared observation.

I have a spread sheet that lists all the city-states and their colors and types. I would share it if I were on my PC. They always have the same color each game. Different city-states of the same type can look like they have the same color because many of the shades are very similar. I have a hard time telling the light purple from the medium purple, for instance.

They always have the same color each game? I am pretty sure that I tested it one time and found the same city-state in 2 different games having 2 different colors. You are sure of this?

Is it possible that some city-states share a common color, so when both are placed in the game, one is forced to assume a different color?

There are so many different city-states that I imagine it would be hard for them to find one color for each one.

hmmm dont know.... what i noticed is that for example Kuala lumpur always had yellow borders for me. Now im not 100% sure but i think Tyre also had same color

City state colours are fixed and the same colours are used several times. The way Firaxis made this particular feature is completely horrible imo., I use a mod that changes the colour of the city state according to their nature:
Religious = White/Grey borders
Mercantile = Yellow/Orange borders
Maritime = Blue/Teal borders
Cultural = Purple/Pink borders
Militaristic = Green borders

Makes it SO much easier to get an overview of them that way!

They all have their own color (this may be shared with another CS), but that color is always the same. I have never seen a CS be anything other than their color. It doesn't change via game.

Tyre is green.

Did the patch change white border cahokia into mercantile then? Im pretty sure I've seen white border Cahokia and it wasn't faith based at least. For example, Bratislava is white bordered but it is cultural and not faith based.

Tyre is Green, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore is Yellow, Kathmathdu (Seoul if without Korea DLC), Sidon and Hanoi is Purple. La Plata is white. CS from Canada and Australia is blue, Ragusa is aqua As far as I can think of.

BTW, I wish they color-coded City State for some meaningful aspect in gameplay. Like what Kaspergm said or City States' personality (Hostile, Irrational, Friendly, etc..)
At least make color means something.

Thank you all for your posts btw. But some of your posts contradict one another. One of you claimed that all religious CS have white/grey borders for example, but another person claimed that different individual religious CS have all sorts of varying colors.

Then delve into the code or take notes as you play and decide for yourself who is right.
