2006 Census Highlights. The census is a snapshot of Canada on May 16, 2006.

- National population: 31,612,897

- Change from 2001: 5.4 per cent, or 1.6 million people.

- Canada's population grew faster than that of any other G8 country.

- The increase is attributed to immigration rather than increased births.

- Alberta leads all provinces in growth with a 10.6 per cent increase, double the national average.

Alberta's growth has to be mainly Canadians moving to the oil sands and thus not reflective on the country as a whole.

As to the country, Canada has the highest immigration rate in the world. I don't see why this is surprising.

Meh, its pretty moderate. It is just the largest out of a bunch of slow-growers.

Of stable-growers. Rapid population growth like in Africa is a bad thing.

I wasn't implying it was good to grow super fast. Just that being the fastest growing G-8 nation doesn't say much.

As for the Alberta economic boom, I think I would rather have international migration than have all of the most selfish, wanna-be wealthy people from all the rest of Canada flood into my city. People here are getting obnoxious.

Would I count as international migration :mischief:

If Newfoundland shows success with their oil plans, then there will be an awesome surge of skilled folk back to that region.

Of course, we might not have learned our lessons of the cod over there, and how not to deal with an abundant and nonrenewable resource.

Ugh, just what the world needs, more stinking useless Canucks. :p

It's pretty handy for the rest of us, though. ;)
