Canadian History Mod v. 1.00

Designed by PEtrudeau and Laura Secord

This complete mod focuses on two of the important elements of Canadian history: Freshwater Trade and POGG (Peace, Order, and Good Government). There are two major changes in gameplay.

First, the Canadian Civ cannot build Settlers or Workers in the normal fashion. Rather than Workers, Canada builds Builders that cost 2.5x the normal cost of Worker units. Settlers are also more expensive. The advantage to Canada is freshwater and coastal navigation. Canada starts the game with a free Raft unit, which upgrades to Canot (Canoe) and then to Canot de Maître at appropriate times.

Second, Settler and Worker unit abilities change over time, and there is a fluctuating population penalty for building the units. Building Settler units such as Huron Settler and Filles du Roi results in no loss of population, while building a Pioneer or Moving Van (later units) results in the normal loss of two citizens from the city building the unit. The Voyageur settler unit can be built for a loss of only one citizen.

There are several other, somewhat minor changes, such as two new governments, Band and Social Democracy, providing interesting alternatives to their historical counterparts, Monarchy and Democracy. Canada does not participate in the normal building of offense/defense units, and instead builds units completely new to Civ3, including Huron Warrior, Huron Archer, Native Musketman, Canadian Musketeer, Mountie, Canadian Infantry, Modern RCMP, Coyote LAV, Blue Cask (the UN peacekeeping unit), CF-100 Canuck, and of course, the CF-105 Avro Arrow.

Credits: We designed only the graphics, wrote the (often very meagre) Civilopedia entries, did the PediaIcons, and beta tested for errors and crashes. Many of the animated units were designed by Doragon, Hunter, Civ Army, and Dark Sheer. Other units were designed by Utahjazz7, dsaindon, Smoking mirror, Pesoloco, pdescobar, and Dog.

New Governments: Band, Social Democracy

New Technologies: Awe, Religion, Cooperation, Trade, Freshwater Navigation, Judaism, Catholicism, Service, Collaboration, Multiculturalism, Protestantism, Responsible Government, Social Democracy

New Improvements: Hockey Arena, LaCrosse Field, War Council, Sacred Ground, Fortifications, Trading Post, Canoe Dock, River Fortress, RCMP Station, Meeting House

New Wonders: Great Tree of Peace, The Hudson's Bay Company, Huron French Alliance, Terry Fox's Run, Arrow Programme, The Canadian Pacific Railroad, Bilingualism, The Inuksuk, Parliament Hill, Leif Erickson's Voyage, Cartier's Voyage, Pierre Berton's Library, Tecumseh's Art of War, Notre Dame des Victoires, Cathedral of Montréal, Stratford Festival, Bombardier's Workshop, Jesuit Education, Gardiner Dam, Modern Diplomacy, Atanarjuat, Bay Street, Democratic Socialism, Confederation

New Units: Aboriginal Brave, Huron Brave, Huron Warrior, Huron Archer, Native Musketman, Canadian Musketeer, British Cavalry, Mountie, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Blue Cask, Coyote LAV, Canadian Infantry, Huron Settler, Voyageur, Filles du Roi, Pioneer, Moving Van, Immigrant, Huron Builder, Jesuit Priest, Jesuit Missionary, Huron Scout, Engineer, Raft, Canot, Canot de Maître, Hudson Bay Galleon, Man-o-War, Spitfire, Lancaster Bomber, CF-100 Avro Canuck, CF-105 Avro Arrow

The zip file containing the entire mod weighs in at 77 MB. If there is interest in this mod, I will seek permission to upload.

Hi Danger Bird,

At this point there is only one new Civ: Canada. We are using the Trudeau leaderhead created by Civ Army. We do have plans to add other civs, but they are not included in v. 1.00. We are working on modified English, French, and U.S. civs. Long-term plans call for other aboriginal nations to be included, beyond the minor changes made to the Iroquois in v. 1.00.

There are 10 new resources: Beaver, Hudson Bay Blanket, Maple Syrup, Blueberries, Cod, Salmon, Trout, Lumber, Caribou, and Polar Bear.

I have enclosed some jpeg screen shots.

Thanks for the positive comment, Juul. I can tell you that the mod has been uploaded, and should be available in a day or two. I am waiting to get the coordinates from Thunderfall. When I do, I will post a thread for "Canadian History Mod."

As a Canadian, this sounds interesting. Will the finished product be more of a north american mod with a Canadian perspective? That would be very interesting. Good luck on getting this done.

My dad has a poster of that CPR pic you posted as a preview, he is a big RR fanatic. Just thought everyone would want to know that

Hi oilfan,

Thanks for the great comments. One of the most enjoyable tasks in building this mod was researching the graphic record of the historical progression of Canada. There is a lot of very rich material to call on. I love the story of the building of the CPR, also. Berton's title for his first volume on the subject, "The National Dream" I think is very appropriately chosen. I imagine your father has read both volumes.

As for the emphasis in the mod, it is not from an exclusively Canadian point of view, but the intention is to force a slightly different way of playing Civ3. Emphasis is on water navigation and exploration rather than building roads, progression and exploration of government, with neither Democracy nor Social Democracy being the final answer in all game situations. Finally, there is an emphasis on defence rather than attack, with strong attack units withheld until later in the game and rewards for diplomatic and collaborative activities (Huron French Alliance, Bilingualism, Responsible Govt, Collaboration, etc.) appearing early and regularly throughout the game. The hope is that this will flavour the game with some rather northern sensibilities, but also provide a different, challenging, and interesting alternative to regular gameplay.

Thanks again for your comments!

I was beginning to think that I was the only person left in this country who still cared about Canadian history. Thank you for making this; I can't wait to play!
BTW, it would be interesting to make a mod that included only Canadian provinces / tribes.
Oh, and some more suggestions for wonders you should include: the Synchrotron, CanadArm, Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Red River Forks, Haida Totem City, Confederation Bridge, West Edmonton Mall and Discovery of Insulin.

Hi Corvex,

Thanks for the suggestions on changes/improvements to the mod. I had not thought about West Edmonton Mall. It is a little overwhelming for me. I did want to add Confederation Bridge, Discovery of Insulin, and Vimy Ridge: these are advances that really put the country on the map, as it were, in engineering, science, and militarily. I have to admit, perhaps grudgingly, that the largest shopping malls seem also to be clustered most prominently on the top side of the continent.

I think there must be a good number of us who are interested in history. Those with higher degrees in history probably squirm at the thought, but it remains true that Pierre Berton's books never seem to go out of fashion. Of course he popularizes history, but the fact that you can walk into any Chapters and see his books, and others, on even the most obscure topics in history has to mean that there is sustained and significant interest. After all, Chapters is not out to educate us, but to take our money, and they would not entice us with historical tomes if that is not what would get us to hand over our Loonies. So, even tho I don't always have the most stimulating conversations waiting in theatre lines or at hockey games, I am optimistic about the interest in things historical. Thanks again for your reply.

I know this is old by a couple months, but I think this is so cool! I am Canadian, and am very proud to be.

Is it here somewhere? And one more thing, how could you all forget the CN tower?
