Every time the tech comes to cancell the effect of the oracal I have civil disorders pop up all over the place... How can I effectivly fight the before it happens w\out building a whole whack of colloseums? It usually happens when I'm starting to wage war w\other nations... it's really frustrating and annoying

(especially when all those boxes pop up at the beginning of my turn, 'cuz I usually have around 20 cities by that time).
Help me please

I used to use the Oracle to give me time to build colisseums in my cities so I could grow quicker. But from all the tips I've got off this site, I am inclining to agree with slowwhand that it is a waste of production capability (unless you are playing at a level where you can guarantee building all the wonders in your own time).

The only time I've built the Oracle is at the end of the game, if wasn't already built. Of course by then, it has no effect other than boosting your skill. Build other wonders instead, but for now, increase your luxury rate and build happiness improvements and wonders.

The Oracle may be the worst Wonder of the early ones. It is very expensive relative to some better ones, and because you need Mysticism to build it, and the next tech after that is Monotheism, which everyone is gunning for to get Mike's Chapel (& Crusaders) and then the next tech after that is Theology, which is popular for Fundamentalism - and this ends the Oracle!

In short it is expensive, doesn't do a whole hell of a lot, and is generally one of the first Wonders to expire. Leave it for someone else to build.

You have to anticipate when it will expire if you are relying on it. Use Diplomats to get embassies, or use Marco Polo's Embassy to watch.

Failing that, you will need to raise luxuries or add entertainers/tax/scientists (reducing food production) well before you really have to.

The best solution is just not to build it. Go for Monothiesm, and then Feudalism/Theology. You won't really need it if you do.

You can also keep your city size smaller, like 5-7 at deity, with one or two scientists. Go for the SOL, and switch governments to Communism or Fundamentalism until you can control a democracy.

BTW, in Monarchy with 60 cities at deity, growth grinds to a halt for me at about 6 or 7, even with the Chapel. Communism or Fundy releases the floodgates of growth, and no need for Oracle. Democracy releases a tidal wave of growth, BTW (if you're prepared for it).

The movie for the Oracle in Civ II Classic.. that I used to build it for that reason alone. When playing solely against the AIs you can make it last quite awhile.. dependant on your other actions..& in that way it can be useful for the early Republic people.

In MP .. it is one of the worst Wonders going..altho I have built it occasionally.

It may be a pretty useless wonder after Theology, but when all the rest of your cities are on capitalisation, why not just build it somewhere for those extra few points? It'll probably be finished in a couple of turns, and the presence of a wonder makes the people a tiny bit happier, even if it doesn't work any more. The "happy"
biggrin.gif
wonders will make loads of people happy, but all wonders will improve the happiness of the people in city in which they are built - even the more warlike ones.

I've never notice that happiness is improved in a city with the mere presence of a wonder, so I just tested it... Even with several wonders in a size one city with one black (double unhappy) citizen, the citizen did not imporove its happiness. Same story for larger sities... the presence of wonders produced no noticible changes in happiness for a city. Im using Civ 2 MGE

Yeah, but I'm thinking of the separate Happiness section on the city screen, rather than actively making citizens happy straightaway. In fact, the presence of a wonder might not make people happy, but can decrease the chances of

people actually appearing in the list of citizens. The happiness of the citizens displayed at the top of the city screen depends upon the four factors listed under happiness (can't remember them all now), so if you improve these slightly, you'll be less likely to have unhappy people overall.
