Capto Iugulum: Empires and Nations

To: The World
From: Empire of Holy Spain

We ask all of you that you do not aid Hungary in their foolish quest to get the war they want. Hungary has been asked again and again what was the purpose and objective of the fleet they lost in the Sea of Alborán, but instead of answering this perfectly reasonable question they instead act as if they were the injured party and compound this with the unlawful imprisonment of Our envoy to their lands. If you wish to remain neutral in this crisis, that is well with us. Any aid given to us would be greatly appreciated. But any aid to Hungary will not be well seen well by us.

We hope that this crisis will end soon, but it is clear that, unless something drastic is done on our part, Hungary will remain in their path of idiocy.

To: United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland
From: Empire of Holy Spain

We congratulate you on your new choice of government. We also thank you for your change of stance in the crisis currently existant between the Empire of Holy Spain and the Kingdom of Hungary. We hope that this is the start of a great friendship between the Empire of Holy Spain and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

To: Kingdom of Hungary
From: Empire of Holy Spain

Our patience is declining very fast. And your recent actions have done nothing but worsen the situation.

Despite the advice of Our advisors, and the demands of Our nation's nobles, We remained still in peace, convinced that Your Highness would show that he was a man of great intelligence and immediately set Our ambassador free and safe to travel back to Spain.

Instead, we have been shown that King Vladislaus the Third is naught but a fool who cares more for revenge than justice. From the moment he sat on the judge's chair, it was clear that it was nothing but a show trial with trumped-up charges levied against Our ambassador, whose only crime was being the nearest Spaniard for the Hungarian king to vent his rage against after his gambit to attack Spanish ships miserably failed.

Many nations have clearly pointed at you as the instigators of the Battle of the Sea of Alborán, but instead of accepting the blame you jumped up and down like a child with a tantrum and rushed to do anything to attempt to put the blame on us, an effort that has completely failed, for not only have more nations supported you, but your greatest ally, the United Kingdom, is now supporting us in this crisis.

The most recent actions taken by the Kingdom of Hungary have shown Us that this is the end of diplomacy, and the time to use strength.

Unless the Spanish Ambassador to Hungary and any other member of his staff that remains imprisoned are freed and safely returned to Spanish lands before the day First of March of the Year of Our Lord 1842, and an apology for instigating the Battle of the Sea of Alborán and acceptance of blame for being the cause of this crisis is issued by the Kingdom of Hungary, the Empire of Holy Spain will regard your actions as an Act of War against our nation, and the Empire of Holy Spain will have no other choice but to declare war on the Kingdom of Hungary.

May God have mercy on your souls.

Signed,
Carlos María Isidro Juan Froilán de Trastámara-Borbón, Sexto de Su Nombre, Emperador de la Sagrada España y Rey de Todos Sus Territorios

OOC: Another great update, EQ.

To: Empire of Holy Spain
From: The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland

Of course. The issue is entirely between the Empire of Holy Spain and the Hungarians. Intervention in the matter, on our part, would be insulting to all involved parties.

To Languedoc
From Paris and Burgundy

We would like to congratulate you publicly on your success in removing the Orleanist revolutionaries. We will correspond further in private.

To the various Italian warring parties, particularly Savoy-Milan-Sicily
From Paris and Burgundy

We are dismayed to see Italy descend again into war, and disgusted that no real effort seems to have been made to resolve the present conflict without resort to arms. We call upon both sides to explain their aims and why there is a need for war, and to resolve the issue immediately, or face the very real possibility that we may find it necessary to intervene.

To: United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland
From: The Republic of The Nethelands

We ask you refrain from colonizing the Island of New Guinea, which your previous government recognized as Dutch

To: The Northern League Members
From: The Republic of The Netherlands

We are hereby withdrawing our nation from the Northern League. The Dutch people have spoken and they are against this alliance. Seeing as I rule by the people and for the people I must speak for them, and do what pleases them. Although we are withdrawing we do hope that relations between us and the nations of the Northern League remain high.

OOC:
Great update EQ!

To: The Northern League
From: Denmark

In the wake of protests and disillusionment among our people, we hereby withdraw from the League.

To: The Northern League
From: Hanover

With Denmark and the Republic of the Netherlands pulling out of the Northern League, we see little reason to continue participation outselves.

To: Kingdoms of Paris-Burgundy
From: The Papal State

We seek war at this time with the Kingdom of Savoy-Milan solely due to their refusal once more to accept and recognize the rightful rule of Austria over Venice. Their involvement with the Brothers of Italy, a disruptive organization, has further destabilized the entire peninsula in frequent acts of what could already be discribed as war. Until the situation is resolved, we hope that Savoy-Milan will be contained in their unbridled aggression towards their neighbors.

From: Brandenburg

Although you are no longer bound to the trade agreements of the Northern League, we would like to ask that, in the interests of German peace, we continue to trade according to the guidelines set by the League.

To Hanover
From Paris and Burgundy

You are bound by treaty to membership of the League and your legitimacy in our eyes depends on it. Please revise your intentions.

ooc:
The Northern League assembled the largest force, bringing troops from Brandenburg, Sweden, and the Republic of the Netherlands, much to the chagrin of the Dutch people.

What happened to my troops?

Look, it's Superman!/redacted

To: The Republic of The Netherlands

Let me get this straight... you're leaving the Northern League because you were asked to honor your agreement the same year we helped you?

CC: Northern League

If you were to stay in the League and the Netherlands do not, I don't think anyone in it would object to you colonizing New Guinea.

To: Poland

No, I am sure you don't understand democracies very well seeing as you continue to oppress your people under your current government. And before you make aggressive comments such as those I suggest you think about it, I highly doubt the rest of the league agrees with your comments.

To: Netherlands
From: Poland

Quite truthfully, I am confused. I don't see why you're leaving the League. You were asked to help Paris-Burgundy like the rest of us, but you also got your claim of New Guinea authenticated by most of the League.

If my people were being oppressed, they certainly would have said something by now. Not every king has to be evil.

Minor grievances are better than half the country rebelling over trade.

To the World
From Paris and Burgundy

We are utterly set against any sort of League dissolution and we shall take an extremely dim view of anyone else leaving the League.

To the Netherlands
From Paris and Burgundy

We now consider that the agreement we made previously on the subject of our attitude to Flanders and to Republicanism is invalidated if you leave the League. To do so is blatently against your interests and we urge you to reconsider.

To Denmark
From Paris and Burgundy

We essentially agree with Poland about New Guinea and point out that in general the League stands behind you in any disputes and stands to support you greatly as you maintain your position as a colonial and great power. Also, we would like to point out that you are bound by treaty to stay in the League (according to the League's settlement of the Hanover issue).

To Hanover
From Paris and Burgundy

If you leave the League, this terminates our recognition of you as a legal government.

We now consider that the agreement we made previously on the subject of our attitude to Flanders and to Republicanism is invalidated if you leave the League. To do so is blatently against your interests and we urge you to reconsider.

If you're invalidated on our previous agreement regarding Flanders and Republican Governments, then we are invalidated on promising not to help fund any Republican Revolutionaries within your borders. We will not be bullied to rejoin the N.L, especially by your nation.

To: Hanover
If you choose to leave the league we of course will still recognize your independence.

To: The World
From: Empire of Holy Spain

The current crisis with Hungary has made it clear that ambassadors are in the risk of losing their lives and their freedom if the nation they are an ambassador to is angered with the nation said ambassador represents. With this in mind, we would like to present a proposition to all the nations in the world, to prevent events like this from ever happening again:
  • The person of an ambassador and his staff will be considered sacrosanct by the nation they are presenting their credentials to.
  • The security of the ambassador and his staff shall be provided by the host nation or the embassy will be allowed to have its own protection.
  • In the event of an ambassador or a member of his staff committing a crime in the nation they are working at, the host nation may not prosecute them, although they may be expelled from the host nation.
  • In the event of an ambassador and/or a member of his staff being expelled, the host nation will provide them safe passage to either their nation or to a third neutral country, from where they may return back to their nation.
  • The immunity of the ambassador and staff shall be held even in times of war.
This is only a list of suggestions, and any nation willing to help us develop a better list of ideas will be welcome.
We hope that this is the first step towards all nations in the world being able to have healthy diplomatic relationships between all of them.

To the Netherlands
From Burgundy and Paris

Of course, there was never any possibility of you supporting revolutionaries in our territory in the first place, because that would be an obvious act of war, and because we always thought, at least, you were a responsible Republic of a more mercantile and less populist sort. On the other hand, we have no responsibilities whatsoever to you regarding Flanders, and whether we take a hostile or moderate stance to the principles of republicanism is also none of your business.

To Spain
From Burgundy and Paris

We agree.

To: Hanover
From: Brandenburg
CC: The Northern League

We have reconsidered our stance towards you. As it stands, the legitimacy of the Kingdom of Hanover rests wholly in one treaty. The same treaty bonds you to the Northern League. As you have broken the treaty, your government is now in our eyes illegitimate, and the treaty we signed cementing both our nations into the Northern League void to all parties.

To: The Northern League
From: Brandenburg

We are remaining in the League.

From: Swedish Empire
To: Brandenburg
CC: Hanover, Denmark

Hanover and Brandenburg, like all other nations, are obligated to abide by the treaties they sign. We demand that Hanover return to the League or reach some type of compromise which is acceptable to the involved parties. No assaults on Hanover's sovereignty by Brandenburg, which recognized its independence, will be permitted.
