Capto Iugulum: Empires and Nations

To: Gen. Scott
From: Poland

Glad you asked. It's because Sweden is our ally, and Poland will declare war on you if they require our assistance.

To: Paris-Burgundy
From: Brandenburg, Austria, Brittany, and Poitou (Not all together, but the same general response would be had from all four)

We see no reason why we should compromise our territorial security in Europe to fight someone else's war on the other side of the world. We will not be joining your coalition.

To: Paris-Burgundy
From: Denmark

We will happily provide an expedition, both of ships and soldiers, to China, though we would state that based on the news we've seen, we doubt any would arrive in time to save Guangzhou or the Europeans still there. If we are to conduct such an expedition, it would likely have to be done without any local support at all, plus a fairly local naval base would have to be secured ahead of time from one of the European empires in the region that's NOT current engulfing the world in war.

To: Hungarian Republicans
From: Austria

We will not be withdrawing our armies until the rightful king is restored to the throne of all of Hungary.

To: Paris-Burgundy
From: Languedoc

We echo the sentiments of Brandenburg, Austria, Brittany, and Poitou.

To: Anyone interested in joining the coalition
From: Poland
CC: Tibet

Perhaps the Tibetans would be willing to aid us? The Ascendants have made it clear that they wish to invade Tibet on multiple occasions, or thousands of Tibetans would still be alive today.

ooc: I have no idea how many men Tibet has lost but it seems to be 1 infantry and 5-6MP a turn, so I'm guessing that's 4 or 5 digits in dead.

To: Frenchmen not joining the coalition
From: Poland

You all realize you would be richer from the spoils of war and from the traders you are keeping open if you help, yes?

Second, revised, Treaty of Poitiers, 1848

The nations of Paris and Burgundy, Poitou, Brittany, and Dauphiné have reached a treaty as follows:

1) The signatories agree to a defensive alliance, and to declare war on anyone who attacks the other signatories.

2) The signatories will not use any armed force or join any alliance against each other while the treaty is in force or for three years afterwards under any pretext whatsoever; and Poitou will not invoke the joint ultimatum against Paris-Burgundy as a reason for breaking clause 3 of this treaty.

3) The signatories agree that this alliance can be cancelled at will by any signatory, upon which there will be a complete non-aggression pact between the signatories for a further three years.

4) The signatories guarantee the independence of Brittany from any and all French states.

5) This Treaty supersedes the Treaty of Poitiers of last year.

Signed King Louis of Paris and Burgundy

Agreeing to the above Treaty of Poitiers for all NPCs.

We have nothing more to say to you. The obtuseness of your aggression is apparent to any man with a good heart and a functioning set of eyes.

What any man with good heart and good eyes will see is what exactly happened: our ships blocked the Brazilian ships' way, your ships arrived and then your ships attacked ours. And all of that even after we made a deal to insure that no war would happen between our nations, and to collaborate in our war against the Ascendant Kingdom of China. It is hilarious in a sad way that you chose to forget said deals as soon as it was useful for you, or not even that.

How utterly puerile. You complain of being attacked when engaging in inalterably deliberate aggression? It is plain to see that your attempts to blockade the Brazilians are an act of aggression no less than firing the first shot. One can hardly complain of being a victim when one stands in the middle of a street, blocking all passersby and shouting harshly at those that intimidate them. Or of blocking a righteous constable's way when he goes to apprehend a criminal. For that is exactly what you did; you stopped the Brazilians from exacting justice upon the Scott regime. Do not pretend to be a poor victim when you are an accomplice of the devil's.

More guilty is the one that shoots than the one who stands in the way. If you did not want war, why did you attack? My ships were not under orders to attack unless attacked, so any deaths that happened are your fault. Perhaps we stood in the way of the Brazilian ships, but we know that your own ships engaged our ships voluntarily. If you did not want a battle, you could have easily turned sail and leave, but instead you decided to fire the first shot.

And we fail to see why the Scott regime should be compared to a devil. General Scott offered from the start very good and favourable terms to the Governors to reunite the United States and prevent a war from starting, and has stated several times his willingness to cede power in a election if he were to lose. Former President Taylor himself was set free and stated that he did not wish for a war to start, as well as the previous congreesmen and senators, who were allowed to leave for their homes. It is understandable that the Governors did not like the initial terms presented by General Scott, but perhaps, instead of immediately turning to violence, they could have discussed the terms to prevent the war.

To prove that we are the adults here, we are willing to sit down and discuss terms of peace with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and the Empire of Brazil if they desire so. If you want to prove you are mature enough, join us in the peace table.

We fail to see why a naval battle is worth a war over when both sides obviously didn't want to fight in the first place. We suggest you both apologize to each other and leave it at that before the entirety of the planet erupts into conflict, as the blame seems to not rest simply on one country.

We thank you for your sage words. We also hope that the United Kingdom heeds them before it's too late.

The only peace we can accept is one in which the Brazilians are paid reparations for the unprovoked attack against them and General Scott is forced to stand down. His rule is unlawful. To suggest that the governors acquiesce rather than fight against him is laughable, and we refuse to be party to any peace in which tyrants are free to enslave liberty at a moment's whim.

My ships were not under orders to attack unless attacked,

Are you saying that the Brazilian Transport Fleet could have sailed right through your blockade without incident if the commander simply doffed his cap and held his fire?

If that is, then you are seriously limiting your ability to do anything, at all. Everybody remember! If the Spaniards set up a blockade but they didn't declare war yet, they probably are under those "special" orders! Sail right through them, they can't do a thing!

If that isn't. which is more likely true, then you, sir, is a liar.

OOC: I lost 5 paragraphs of analysis yesterday, and hoped it won't be necessary. Seeing that you kept gunning that statement, I am obligated to put my 2 Ducats in the barrel.

To: The World

We would like to announce that Languedoc and Normandy have agreed to a non-aggression pact, and a treaty promising to defend each other in the event that one is attacked by a signer of the Treaty of Poiters.

@kentharu: Welcome aboard, as long as you continue my installed policies of building mountains of skulls among the smoldering ruins of Chinese cities.

IC: To: The Empire of Holy Spain, and General Scott, the usurper of the United States
CC: The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, the Empire of Brazil, the Rightful Government of the United States of America
From: The Estados Unidos de Nueva España

The Estados Unidos de Nueva España notes with concern the escalation of violence in the region. However, we see no solution to this issue other than to once again join our voices to the others calling upon General Scott to resign and reinstate the former government of the United States.

We also call upon the backers of Scott to stand down, in order to avoid any further bloodshed.

OOC: Wait, what the hell just happened?
