Capture+++

The game is very often not logical :)
True, but not an argument since realism certainly plays a role in Civ 5 even if it's not perfectly achievable; but of course I'm not trying to demand that you work on this, it was just a hope that it may "inspire" you to do so :D.
I may try to give the Capture Great People mod another shot, though, over the holidays and if I succeed in making it VP compatible I'll just post it in the general modding thread.

I'm not trying to dump on your mod here, I'm just sad @whoward69 's mod doesn't work with VP (I tried to modify it to make it compatible but I failed) and I don't think he's willing to make it compatible since he hasn't been updating his mods in two years so I thought I'd pitch you these ideas that could make your mod a lot more interesting and nuanced and maybe you'll think about it :)
Have you asked him if he was coming back and planned updates to some of his other mods? I'm curious just as much as the next person.

No, I just saw that he hasn't updated his mods in over two years, though he has posted on the forum this year. I'll write him a PM if such a feature exists in this forum, though I just checked his profile and saw that he viewed this very thread 5 minutes ago

Who knows....maybe he'll even post? :D

He has been active. He updates his DLL recently. But my question is what of the other mods in his database.

Ah I didn't see that; I was going by the "Mods by Category" structure on his website and checking the "New" category; however, now that I checked it again I noticed that it's not rank-ordered by date and that there is actually one mod that is from August of this year! So yeah, if he doesn't post in this thread today (since he's now seen my post here) I'll ask him in a PM.

There is also the Automaton he made which is dependent on the new version of DLL.

Yeah that is the mod I saw when I checked the individual entries after noticing that they aren't sorted by date.

Anyway, I talked to him and he suspects it's a DLL issue so it won't be easy to fix and he's not interested in making it VP-compatible anyway. I may make another attempt to fix it over the next few weeks if I have the time, though, but don't hold your breath.

  • You have a similar issue with capturing Great Merchants; why would they create a town for you? Conducting a trade mission seems fine, I suppose, but I like the way Capture Great People implemented it (the unit is destroyed and you simply get some gold). Great Engineers and Scientists have a similar problem and thus work similarly (one-time boost of their respective yield). Great Diplomats aren't included in whoward's mod but I think they shouldn't be able to create embassies either (if captured), though I don't know what an appropriate one-time yield would be (maybe a little influence with some or all city states?).
  • Great Musicians, Artists and Writers are captured as is in Capture Great People, which makes sense to me since creative types tend to be more lefty and thus tend to have lesser ties to their nation so they probably mind it less to work for the enemy (not meant to be a political statement but this is how it makes sense to me).
Why do you think that GM, GS and GE are more dependent on nation that GWAM? I would say the opposite, because a nation can inspire art, music and poetry much more than it can inspire hard science.

Well that was just a half-as*ed explanation for how the Capture Great People mod mechanics can be justified

There is evidence that artists tend to be more liberal and liberals tend to have less loyalty/connection to their country and community, but of course this is just a tendency, not a property of all artists.

@civplayer33 Is your mod compatible with Israel, MUCfVP and VPEE?

I haven't added any special cases from these mods, so it should be compatible in the sense that it shouldn't break the game but special Great People or other civilian units added by those mods will probably not be captured.

Ok, that's what I thought. You can look to Capture+++ and see what cases are there to make your mod compatible.

I just tested it and the current version handles the additional units from MUCfVP and Israel normally (since they're all versions of GGs they give the Heroes promotion to the capturing unit)...I don't think that VPEE has any civilian units that are relevant, no?

I'll be publishing an update anyway, which will make SS parts give some science upon capture (currently they are just destroyed without any reward).

This is unique ability of some nation so I don't think it would be good from balance game perspective, but YES, you can program this if you want.
