Does anyone carry any stereotypes to the game?
this meaning,
do you play countries because thats your nationality?
do you NOT play countries because you have something against them? (in real life)
do you play countries because you like their historical superiority?
and so on....

I personnally love China....because im Chinese!!
I dont like using any of those native groups: India, iroquois, etc.
I'll never use the koreans or Japanese....

how about you?

I almost always play the Americans, because I am an American. I never play the French, cause I think they are (CENSORED) and I would`nt have the motivation to be succesful with them.

Also, when I feel to rape and pillage, I like to play my WWII scenerio as Hiter of Germany and conquer Europe (burning Paris to the ground in the process ;)).

I always attack the Americans and have never (nor will ever) played them :) The game is waaay too American-centric already. I mean, the Iroquois? Don't make me laugh.

The thing is, the game really encourages stereotypes. The Germans and Japanese are aggressive warmongers. The English have a 'stiff upper lip' when they talk to you. Perhaps most laughable, the Iroquois have mounted warriors as their unique unit.

I'll assume that nations that are stereotyped as being aggressive will be more likely to attack me, but that's because they really will be more likely to attack me.

-Sirp.

Stereotyping is much more common in this game, I believe, than that last, because of the abilities. I started out playing as America, and I tend to play Americans a lot, especially when trying to go to another level. I really like Scientific/Industrious, so I play the Persians or Ottomans a lot, depending on when I want my GA. Like the Spanish, too.

I don't really hold it against a Civ-civ anything their real-world counterpart may do. I don't play the French, because I don't like their abilities. But in a recent PBEM game that was started, I got the French from the RNG. So I'm figuring out how to play them.

In previous civs, I use to decide what color I wanted to be, and what city names I like best. I used to play the Germans a lot, because of their city names. Romans too.

Well, I once played as Romans on world map. Tried to build as large empire as they had IRL. Then I reached industrial age around 1000AD and decided not to continue any further.

I like the variety found in this game and do not let any stereotyping get in the way. The only civs I have not tried are the Americans and the English because of their UU's and traits. I give all civs an equal opportunity to conduct business with me and do not discriminate against them. However, if they do me wrong, I will do my best to eliminate them completely.

Well, once again with Civ it's all about time periods.
Do you think there would be a America right now if it was not for the French?
How about that nice big statue you have in a harbour.
And what is the reason for this, as they were going to use their veto in the security council.
Shall we add this up.
Use of veto.
France = 0 (but said they would)
UK = 23
USA = 68
(ok, my memory is not that good, this is what I think I heard at the time, may be a few numbers out, but it proves my point)

Well, the game sure tends to stereotypes. Traits, aggressiveness, leader and UUs all tend to that, meaning it gives you less possibility to "real" alternative history.

I am French but rarely play as them because I don't like their UU, color (that I could change easily) and in World map, I know too well their area...

I like the opportunity of trying the different civs with different UU and traits as well as cities and areas in World Maps, goes for different strategies.

I never played Americans, English or Koreans (I have to try though) probably because of their UUs. Rarely as Germans or Spanish because no big surprises. I like ancient and oriental civs best.

About hating a civ. Zulus (I let you choose whether it is because of their barbaric nature in Civ3 or in RL ;) ) that I attack as soon as I possibly can (raize cities) and mostly civs that annoy me in current game or the one before. France has supposedly a low aggressiveness but keeps on threatening me which leads to annihilation wars. So basically my own country is a strong enemy most of the time.

Hmm. Romans, Americans, Russians, Germans - these would be my favorites. Re: stereotyping - alot of so called civilization traits simply arose because of the various geographical and geopolitical circumstances various peoples found themselves in - for example, Germans: always surrounded by enemies, subject to much conquest and occupation throughout the centuries - you better get militaristic and industrious if you want to live... Other civs never really got off the ground due to to isolation (no tech trading) and relatively hostile climates - ancient Zimbabwe and the various Central/South American are prime examples of this. In civ3 try putting the English and Japanese on their respective islands on a world map to start and they probably won't get very far.

Sir, this is not the place for political discussions. If you have something to say about real world politics, please, by all means, private message me with your thoughts. However, in this thread I would appreciate it if you stuck to the topic at hand. I think the moderators would appreciate it, as well. Thankyou very much.

I only play/don't play a civ because of their civ-specific traits or unique unit. Aside from the fact I don't have any feelings of hatred towards certain civs in real life, I don't see how these feelings could be carried over to a computer game.

I was about to post in this thread a general warning: This thread is treading a very thin line between discussion & nation-bashing. Be careful. :scan:

Although I'm an American, I have never played as the Americans. I'm sure I will eventually because I like to try all the various civs and I like to use a variety of strategies. I'm also still trying to devise an F-15 strategy.

I tend to play as ze Germans a lot. I love those Panzers! :)

There's no bigotry in my games--every opponent is equally worthless. ;)

i like to play as the french or the egyprians, i like the egytian culture in histry, and i liked the power of the french in the industrial times. i never play as then english, if they were the british i would play them since they were british at the time of their greatness during the empire. and because im scottish so i would be part of it

I developed a strategy

Its called modding the game (Do it for the French as well)

Make the F-15 have the Bombard of a Bomber, and give the Musketeer 4 attack, and you should be fine

In game? Absolutely nothing wrong at all. But are they really deserving to have a place in the game? No way.

I used to have a bias against the French, because of the color pink. I guess that's not a real life stereotype. Anyway, I tried them out one time and realized, they are perfect for builders and large empires. The French are one of my favorite civs now.
