This Thread is an open conversation to discuss and explore all the ideas of what we can do to make the game of Civilization even better.

For those who don't already know
Civilization Online

is going to be the next iteration of Civ.
Since many people feel like Civ V, Civ Revolution, and other explorations haven't raised the bar very far (not to say that there haven't been some improvements or fans),
What could we do better?

I would like to open up the discussion to explore these ideas together, and to inspire the community to see what we can do to to improve upon them:

What do you think of the New Civ Online and it's ideas?

What did you think was good/bad about Civ V/Civ Revolution that we should explore/steer clear of?

If you had to start from scratch and make a better Civ game, what would it have?

Caveman2Cosmos is probably the most progressive attempt to keep that ball of progress advancing, building on Civ IV, ROM, RECDCM, BUG, AND, the Stone Age Mod, etc, etc. (and relatively soon SMAC/X, MOO, Star Trek, The FinalFrontierPlus for the Galactic Era), with an expansion pack like version almost every 2 mths.

What would you like to see, to make a better Civ game?
Our own collective version of what Civ6 could/should be?
What ideas would you like to see?

Since it is a good bet that C2C is our best foundation, and so we don't have to take the long road and start from scratch -
What could we do to realistically do to help make C2C evolve into the best Civ 6 version we could hope for?

Limiting nothing, from any game (CIV, Sim City, Age of Empires, Spore, etc) video, board game(Risk, AXIS&Allies, Battletech, etc), roleplaying, history etc, or any movie, book, magazine, science article, or source - fiction, science fiction, fantasy, theme, or realistic speculation of the future.

What ideas would you like to explore and play?

Reserved - as wanted.

It will be interesting to see what C2C has inspired in Civ Online, also. I think we can even improve on that one, with ideas if not resources.

Of course.
Feel free to go into more detail.
Aren't we here to discuss and explore things like that?

Multi-player?
Online?
MMORPG?
Realtime vs turn based?
and of course how to have the best of both worlds. (as it would make sense.)

So CivOnline is
Procedurally driven maps to explore, so they picked up on the exploration focus.
Sandbox, hope it is more the scope of Grand Theft Auto than the recent SimCity, Civ Revolution, or LOL/WOW. I like some varied experience and environmental changing in my games.
Real-Time, not sure I'm a fan of taking out the single player, or the turn based strategy.
Looks like Sid Meier just looked at it...
It a World of Warcraft/League of Legends (Moba) type exploration.
Simple as possible, 4 nations (at first)..
was hoping for more, not less depth. but I don't expect much with these bite sized/commercial moments/"experiences".

We need more EPIC!, more realistic!
More Total Recall/Lord of The Rings worldbuilding vs Sparkly Vampired/Hunger Gamed flash moments.
Less cartoony and unicorned(not to hate on unicorns or fantasy) out. More experience and depth.
The plausibility of a believable playable history with a living, breathing world around it.
Engaged Strategy that you have time to think about and enjoy.
An experience that you can enjoy spending more time in. And chew on it how you like.

"It's not Turn based..." That for me is the killer.

My sons may enjoy it, but I would not.

As far as I have read, it's really going for the 'Farmville' market a la Facebook games. Not the direction I (or most of us here I think) would be interested in. It will also have (likely in the extreme anyway) ZERO modability, since it's an online game hosted by the game provider.

Let's show them how it should be done.

I expect them to do as little as possible.

You're getting carried away with this Online thing, as Koshling said above, its NOT moddable.:nuke:

I'm just hoping it's inspirational, and will drive a few people back here.

If a few useful or new ideas are created then, more success to us.

Look... eventually I think we can do something that would allow ongoing multi-play that would draw in players in droves and I can imagine very easily how we can actually make that really work for us - even financially though the players would never have to pay a dime.

But we're at a stage right now... remember in movie 'The Social Network' the line, "Right now what we have is cool." Following the same point they go on to make there, it's not time yet to mess up C2C by making it not 'cool'. It has so much more potential. Looking at the Civ Online project it may feel like we could be missing out to not be jumping into an attempt to find a way to compete with them directly. But the above points about why it doesn't work for the hardcore civ fanatic are so absolutely valid. And there's ways around it. But I strongly believe that what we need first is a C2C that fulfills our vision. We're getting there. And once there... then we need to replatform. This could take a LONG time but I'm quite confident we're heading in a direction that will take us to a place far beyond the dreams of even some of us who work directly on this grand project.

And besides, its not always about competing. If we all felt that way we'd be more worried about doing some stock trading with our time or something to that extent. This is a labor of love. Follow your bliss and success will follow but it may not be due to the exact actions you take as you follow that bliss. I think at the core, we mod because we love the game as it is and how we believe it could be.

As a result I, for one, do not allow myself many distractions by other games lest I may be drawn away from this vision into another project with perhaps equal potential but less progress towards that potential. I gave that link a read through and sure it looks somewhat cool. But I probably won't play the game - it'd distract me from what we're achieving here.

Not to sound boring, but what I'd like to see at this point is more optimisation and better ai :p

Aren't MMOs rather shallow in the AI dept since it's the Human to Human interaction that is it's core?

Very much so, which is the opposite of what a 'proper' civilisation game should have.

Agreed!

The Reason why i hate Civ 5 isn't because it's a crappy game i've played a demo for a short while and felt Well this is a Decent game but it doesn't Deserve the Civilization demeanor it just lacks more of what once was Civ 2,

Civ 3 i liked although i felt like missing things, Ages where shallow and easily gone through and balance was far to be found in certain places but it's Editor was easy to use and could fix Some of the issues in certain places
Civ 4 addressed the Balance issues and the Short ages but removed the Palace feature i so loved from Civ 1-3 but again just like Civ 3 i got over it and had great fun
Then i found C2C and Civ 4 was as solid as a concrete pillar in a granite formation
and Civ 5 Threw away with the tiles and replaced it with a different shape (ok i can accept it just like the Palace) then they Changed the way Unit's worked in Such a fashion that annoyed the living crap out of me, and other things that i just disliked in general to me it's just another Cash Cow like 75% of the Mayor gaming industry titles

if Online throws away with more then i would be ashamed to even test it the genius behind Civ is sadly no longer employed by Firaxes and with Civ 3 and 4 they done an OK job of not screwing up

Thanks for all your continuing discussion of what make Civ great and could make it even better.
I also personally think Civ 5 is awkward, watered down, and too simple.
I don't see CivOnline, or Civ 6, reaching further.
Civ IV and especially C2C is my high water mark. I want to see them explore becoming even better!

Now that we are starting to explore the future of Caveman2Comos, and the Future of Civ in building the Cosmos,
I encourage Everyone to pitch in and explore what we would love to see in CIV!!!

Please join in the continuing conversation and
help create the best ideas of the Civ game,
that you would love to see, play, create, and explore!
This is your chance to have that ongoing discussion.

Caveman2Cosmos is open to explore all ideas improving Civ, the future, the Cosmos, and Beyond!

What are your ideas and your personal vision of making a better / best Civ game?!

I challenge you all to
talk freely about them here,
and have your chance to see what we can dream up and explore!
Let's push the limits of what we can find and create!

What do you think? Care enough to go into detail??
