CDG Series Discussion Thread

Sadly I blow really hard at domination, but I've been trying to step my game up so I'll do my best with that map!

OK, well there you go. A whole area of the game you're yet to master. :P

But seriously, I don't think it's true for every map that the AI cannot win. Really hard Deity maps, especially with NQ or Acken Mod, are so difficult for the human to win before AI winning opportunities come round. I'm actually fairly confident that it will be a CHALLENGE for most players to win this first NQ DC map. But as I said, we'll see...

So let it be said here. V6 is coming this week end or the next and a challenge map thread will be made on that day...I'd start with immortal for the first game as an intro.

I think this announcement will bring more excitement to this forum than the CIV VI announcement actually...

Is 200pop doable? Probably, e.g. 8*25. Then it will be

200/180/170/160 pop : 5/3/2/1p
9/8/7/6 cities (self-founded before t150): 5/3/2/1p
Victory turn: <210/230/250/270 : 5/3/2/1p

Never build a military unit*: 2p
Have 3 or more religions in empire*: 2p
Plant Holy Site on Cow-tile: 1p

Total: 20p.

*Like before, Scout & gifts are allowed. Its also allowed to build the Elephant, since REX tends to get some early war.
*At least one city at end of game

I´m not a very stubborn fella, so things can change if prompted to. It will be somewhat different from the current Immortal game (in case you guys play both), with the emphasis on wide play.

It will prob be a NQPangea and I´ll add some suitable AIs. Just to make sure you're not boxed in by Alex and Shaka on t30 and have to settle 5 cities on one-tile tundra islands.

Alright, so this kind of got buried but I think it should continue on anyways. I think these achievements are great, and I think CDG should carry on because even though many of us don't even have time to play one good game of CIV every two weeks, the maps will be available for years to come regardless for us to come back to if we're either feeling nostalgic. So, if DKfish is still willing, then onward to CDG14.

Windows 10 can be installed on a mac and it only costs about $150ish max. Dual boot!
I tried dual booting for my previous gaming addiction. Just not worth the bother.

Steam machines are too cramped and Steam OS probably won't even play Civ 6.
Steam is currently offering a game controller bundled with CivVI. But maybe that is some kind of typo?

Civ 6 looks pretty crap to me on first glimpse
Just the cartoony screen shots -- or are something else? I have read all I could, and I feel I know nothing.

Your call. But why, out of interest?

Maybe the consolisation of all my favourite game franchises continues?

So ugly and dumbed-down, from first view. I'll take a lot of convincing, at this point.

Restarting my computer just to play a game for a bit just ended up seeming like too much of a hassle. I found that I never bothered. So then I tried SoftPC but that was not any better. It might be different now, but at the time Windows had to run in a windows -- and PC games all want to be full screen. The screen resolution was off too. Again, something that is certainly better, but back then running anything other than 4:3 1024x768 resulted in odd visual artifacts that continuously bugged me. I gave up that game.

Could be. I don't understand why they have not announced tablet compatibility yet. Of course, PC Gamer magazine is not going to ask that question...

Eh, people said the same thing about IV. I am okay with the visuals. OTOH, this Ed Beach quote troubles me (emphasis added):
Civ VI builds off a lot of the design that Civ V finished with, but the code and the A.I. and everything like that is all implemented from scratch to fit Civ VI.
I don't want the AI to fit. I want the AI redone.

Fair enough. I tend to play in longer stretches, so it doesn't bother me.

+1

@DF are you still going to post a game?

If for any reason he doesn't, I can post my Celts map easily enough.

OK I will post my map tomorrow, then

Why are you worried about honesty Beetle? What do you care if someone cheats? Are you gonna do the hard work that the HoF people do and check save files?

As for the leadership gap, it looks like you've done OK to me.

First off... welcome back yet again! I am taking wagers on how long before you snap and go on hiatus if anyone would like to put some dough on this prop bet? Ha Ha just teasing you. We all end up coming back to one of these Civ games eventually and these boards!

Now about this cheating thing! As I have told you and others on this forum in the past! If someone wants to cheat they are going to cheat. Nothing in this world is so secure that the cheaters or crooks can't break into. No reason to really go to such extremes to check save files and what not.

As I have said in the past, for a GOTM game, all you have to do is download the file under one user name and explore the map and go and play it on another user name. Heck you can even just go and wait a few weeks and read all the posts to get your edge if you like. So many other ways to cheat the system, I don't have the time to explain them all.

I personally enjoy playing the map one time win or lose with no knowledge. I have played second attempts before but I lose some sort of realism on a replay. Now as far as abuse to the AI... I love to abuse the AI or take advantage of some dumb glitch all day long but that is just my own personal fun.

Oh and after looking at the screen shots of Civ VI... I have to agree with you that it does not look very good. It sort of looks like Civ Rev on my I Phone. Very Cartoon Like. We all know that it will be a horrible game for the first year or two until they can suck the money out of us for the expansions!

I bet $5 on me not lasting the summer :D

The view you've expressed re: cheating is more or less a reflection of the same views that I'm expressing. That people can and will cheat unless the save files are rigorously inspected - and even that may not be ironclad. And since these are really relaxed, I think we should operate 100% on the honour system. Having to post screenshots for achievements sounds lame to me.

I'm in work for the next 10-12 hours. As soon as that's done, I'll post the Celts map.

Those of you who are waiting for it, download the Historical Religions Complete and Pikes to Muskets Mods, as they will be required.

HT to consentient for the Celts map!

I am hoping that donkeyfish posts his India map on the first. If not, I have an American map ready to go. I ended up changing a few things from my earlier proposal, so I will confess those here so as to avoid unpleasant surprises!

It would be for a Diplo VC which we have not had yet in the CDG. Short of 7 Alexs, I can’t really think how to make diplo challenging, so I think this would be mostly about the RP, and playing a militaristic civ against its natural strengths.

Opponents would be Russia, China, Korea, Japan, and the rest drawn from the Mid East characters.

Proposed achievement points:
Close out Liberty, run Freedom: 1 point each.
Broadway and Atomic+ Era wonders: 1 point each for building (bulbs okay, 0 points for capture).
Your World Ideology and World Religion passed: 1 point each.
Win International Games and build ISS: 1 point each.
Complete Apollo and Manhattan projects: 1 point each.

Penalty: Each civ killed (and not recalled) after WC convenes: minus 1 point each.

There are enough cranky middle eastern type AIs to fill all the slots, so that is what I used. No Russia, China, Korea, Japan. Sorry about that.

Since the AI selected were setting the theme, I used the Mesopotamia map. This was the map used for the Assyria DCL game. It seems to me that this particular script means extra space, light production, and no Natural Wonders. I re-rolled maps until I got one where I was not killed off in the first 100 turns!

The achievement points proposed earlier don’t actually give anything for winning by DiploVC. To correct that, I plan to add:
1 point for winning WL vote. 1 extra point if it is the first WL vote. 1 additional point if you win WL vote before T300. 3 points available.

There was not much feedback when I wrote this up before, but what feedback I got was positive. Do please let me know if anything seems terrible. But it takes me a while to come up with a game that I think is worth sharing. Which will be okay if DF posts on the first. Otherwise, this may be the best I can offer.

So I have an immortal map ready (level 6 of my mod) which I think is more than a worthy challenge deity player included. Great map, good start but a really harsh neighbour and a runaway on the other side.

I'll probably finalize version 6 today and release everything soon.

Depending on reactions I'll up or diminish difficulty for the next.

Oooh can't wait :)

Let’s use this for CDG 15.
I have been kind of curious to see what us poor Mac folks when using Acken’s Mod — but not so curious enough to try it on my own.

If I cannot open the file, I will create my own as something of a consolation prize.
