What do you think are the main 21 differences (can be more just an out line) between the Republicans and Democrats (refering to U.S. politics) and what is your stance on these issues?

I'll start us out
1# Abortion

(I made this thread to look into the viability of a 3rd major party in the U.S. if any)

Woohoo bring back the Whig party!!!!

2) legalizing marijuana

The whole legalizing marijuana argument is more of a sane person vs. druggie argument rather than a republican vs. democrat one.. Same with gay marriage.

#4 Taxes.

Influence of the Dominionist movement: strong in the GOP, not very in the Dems.

I'm both sane and a pot head.

8-Social Security

9- Right to Bear Arms

I think many here are mixing up "liberal vs conservative" and "GOP vs Dems", most of the issues listed above have nothing to do with these political parties.

11 - Cradle to grave government hand holding vs. individual responsibility.

That said, the Republicans are looking more and more like Democrats every year, while Democrats are beginning to look more like radical leftist socialists. Me, I'm probably voting for The Constitution Party in the next elections.

Instead of continuing this one at a time, I'll list what I think are the main 21 differences. Some are more important than others, and some are more divisive than others.

No particular order:

abortion
gay rights
immigration
minimum wage
level of progressiveness of tax structure
corporate taxation
carbon emissions / global warming
gun control
social security
welfare
education (specific issues include vouchers, teachers unions)
globalization / outsourcing
military spending
drug law
Iraq war
war as a foreign policy instrument in general
international financial aid
homeland security and related issues of liberty
interpretation of "separation of church and state" (especially in education)
labor unions
deficit spending (Democrats being the "conservative" ones)

I'm too lazy to go into detail about my views on these issues, but as for third parties, I'd like to see a moderate (not so anarchist) libertarian party that is more willing to abandon principle (for the sake of actually getting things done) than the official Libertarian Party of America. I'd most likely vote for it, as would many others from what I can gather.
