Challenge #5: Million Dollar Monty

Bah, I make a lousy dictator. I'm hearing significant scepticism (at least for this week) about Kingmaker, and enthusiasm for Ironman, so I'm going to pull a Schwarzenegger and reposition myself in the center. My new decree is that this challenge shall be Ironman!!!.
<cue old Black Sabbath music>

Immortal, raging barbs. I'm thinking Always War, to really make the point. We don't want anyone surviving, now do we? And I'm thinking either Cyrus or Hattie would make a decent leader. An early UU based off chariots would add an additional defensive option to the otherwise-standard pile-of-archers approch. Plus if anyone actually manages to build a second city, Creative could come in useful.

And, my schedule has changed, I'm not leaving town til tomorrow. So y'all have to wait another day. Gives me time to play with some starts. I want 0 AD to be at least conceivable.

Is he live or dead? I see thoughts within his head.
We'll just pass him there. Why should we even care?"

Lousy dictator indeed. Hehe. I was interested in both, so don't change it on my account.

For Ironman I hope you have the time to test both "Always War" and without it. The barbs are one matter, but since the AIs receive bonuses against them, they will be way more advanced than us when we meet them. "Always War" might mean "until we meet the first AI". :D

As for early UU, chariot-based are probably ok since you have to plan on securing horses anyway, and then copper or iron, or promote archers to fend off barb Axes. Skirmishers and Quechuas are a bit too much. I think in the end it's between Peter (expansive -> bigger cities/city, philo -> better use of farms+specialists), Cyrus (exp, creative -> easier to get new resources in city borders, good UU) and Hatty (spiritual?!, creative, good UU and easy to reach as she starts with Agri and Wheel). The problem is, if there are no horses nearby then you're probably dead going for Animal Husbandry with Hatty; on the other hand Cyrus starts with Hunting and so does Peter. Cyrus could get some archers before looking for horses.

I'm leaning toward Cyrus now. Peter in second place, Hatty third.

Thanks for going with Ironman I think you'll get the populist vote. I'll try and do a couple of games at Kingmaker over the next 2 weeks and let you know how it goes.

As for Ironman

, I don't think there is any danger of us beating Immortal Raging Barbarians, let alone the AI's.

A chance at hitting 0AD would give the challenge more longevity. Being near Horses and other utilities will allow some choices for early units. Starting on a couple of food resources will obviously strength an early whip.

Hopefully if we can throw down some early sand-bags we might be able to get a foot hold.

As for the leader.... anybody but Gandhi!

eep ironman :shifty:

i´m scared already...

edit: hah, gotz me one of dem picture thingies as well! :smug:

Ironman... should be fun. I started RB Epic 4, and actually had the most fun I've ever had playing civ. Then again, in that game, the player was given their own continent, so this should be different. All I hope for is a hill to settle on (that defensive bonus REALLY comes in handy).

I'm not sure I would call it fun, but it was one of my more humourous games, that's for sure. Note that Epic 4 was rigged in one specific respect: the barbarians didn't start with archery, which they normally do at that level (I think so, anyway. They had it in my test games).

So what's the scoring? year of demise on your best attempt?

Don't forget to experiment with maps. This challenge is likely very different on Achipelago/Tiny Islands.

pangea!
naval invasion won't come, so archipelago would completely defeat the point :nono:

Okay folks, I'll be posting the starting save in a new thread in just a minute.
Immortal, standard, normal, pangaea, temperate, low sea level, with 5 opponents. I set the sea level and reduced opponents (6 is normal) because my first few test maps started with near neighbors and not many barbs. In one of those games, I managed to storm a neighbor and get up to six secure cities! Raging barbs and always war. I found I could survive the barbs and even grow a bit. Always war should make victory ultimately impossible, however, as no one will ever trade with you and they'll all have "mutual military struggle" bonuses with each other. We are Cyrus of the Persians. Expansive/Creative, Hunting and Agriculture, Immortals. Use them well. Winner is the last to die. Have fun.
