I disagree. There is nothing wrong with Catherine II or Catherine the Great as the leader of Russia. She meets my 2 criteria for leadership
1 - actually ruled the civ she represents. Ruled Russia from 1762-1796 (might be a bit off on the dates, my memory is not as sharp as it used to be - and it was pretty dull back in college as well. too much

and
2 - Made a significate contribution to his/her civ. In Catherine's case, she not only added some 200,000 square miles to teh Russian empire, she continued Peter the Great's goal of "Westernizing" Russia and making it a European Power. After all, she was not called "The Great" for nothing.
So what if she was German by birth. She was Russian by action.
back to the topic of this thread, Joan should not be the leader of France because she does not meet Sealman critera #1.
As for other leaders of Russia, depending on your point of view (any any special senarios you wish to run) other Russian rulers can be as good as, or an even better, choice. Such as Peter the Great, Ivan the Terrible.
I would not choose Lenin or Stalin as leaders of Russia because they were not actual leaders of Russia. They were leaders of the Soviet Union. I know, I know... some people say so what, it is basically the same. I tend to disagree but that is my position reached back during my study of Eastern Euopean History. I veiw Lenin and Stalin as leaders of the Russian civ the same way that I would of Jefferson Davis (President of the Confederate States of America) as being the leader of the American Civ. Just a case of semantics.
If this does not bother you, than both would be adequate leaders, although I would say that Stalin would be a better choice than Lenin.
